I remember six of us drove down in a camper for this and somehow we got lost about six times on the way there. Still got there in time and saw it all before having our camper broken into. A memorable trip.

Smets looked like he was just cruising around. Bike just lugging along. So smooth and beautiful to watch!

Boy you can tell the announcer does NOT care for American 🇺🇸 crew.
    Lamson was our week link.
Terrible the way the announcer talked about the guys smh in professional commentating.
Thank you for sharing and helping me to remember the race.

Ryan Hughes, USA on the 500cc, (used to racing a 125), was 9 seconds a lap slower than the leaders in timed practice/qualifying. He said, 'I have never been 9 seconds slower than a leader in my life". Roger DeCoster told him, "I think we picked the wrong guy", and Ryan was crushed.
He redeemed, overcame, and put in the performance that was needed, and almost won his class.

@D man I can see your point. But I don't think Roger planned on Hughes pulling through when he told him, 'I think we picked the wrong guy". I am sure Roger thought they picked the wrong guy. Crushing?, for sure. But Ryan was known for "digging deep" when he had to by his own will. Today at the MXofN, Roger could say, "You all suck",---and they would. And they do. :(

TEAM USA TOP 25 COUNTDOWN: #22 RYAN HUGHES
In 1995, Hughes rode the 500 class on the big KX500 that Kawasaki basically handed over specifically for this race, as the 500 Nationals as a series ended in 1993. He rode well in Slovakia on the steep Svrepec track, but a late-race crash he could not avoid helped bring about the defeat, as Ryno ran into a fallen Kurt Nicoll on one of the steep hills in the late going. Here's a video of the race.
In 2003 Hughes finished second in the Saturday qualifier behind his teammate Ricky Carmichael, but in that year's funky one-moto, winner-take-all showdown, the chain popped off his KTM in the early going, while teammate Tim Ferry struggled with a broken thumb. (Here's the complete video of that final moto, including a great battle between the GOAT and the King, Ricky Carmichael and Stefan Everts.)
In winning that one moto outright in 2000, and helping Carmichael and Pastrana get Team USA back on top of the world-as well as the other times he went over and fought it out with Europe's best-Hughes ranks #22 on our list of Team USA's Top 25 riders of all time.

@@scoremxcom If I remember correctly, it was an interview with Ryan Hughes,---I think in MXA, not too long before I posted that.

Shame on smelts nasty comments what a bad sport, and a cry baby. He won but yet still ran his mouth. I guess still sore over World War II I don’t know but he didn’t represent his Country very well.

Do you mean Smets he's from Belgium they were Invaded by Germany in ww2
but they were on the side of the allies. what do you mean by saying I guess he's
still sore over World War II. did the Germans force the Belgium army to fight
for them during the occupation or something I am not sure. but the Belgiums
were very appreciative to be liberated by the allies.
