Brother I know they put the tear tabs at the top of the MRE package but the way we open them in the military is along the long edge. Strip all MREs, eliminate outer and inner meal bags and redundant packages. Spread weight of keeper packs to different pack pockets. Carry only one multi-purpose stove. You did good with the sleep/shelter. When in doubt, get it out. Did you need 3L water for one night? Do you need all the separate organizer bags…you have backpack pockets? I am a retired soldier for life. I thought you might enjoy a bit of my military story. I always liked my MREs. I don't think I ever had one that was "nasty" to me. I was always proud of the fact that I could swing my duffle bag up to my shoulder and carry it. (That may be what is causing the sciatica I experience now :( My favorite story is about the time I met up with a mama bear who was facing me less than 10 feet away. I felt no fear; I just turned around and walked away. That night I moved my army tent close to our headquarters area. Nothing like acting like a scaredy cat woman. Ha!!!
Shared many camps with bears. 5 weeks ago, solo canoe trip, I shared a beach with a bear. We got along okay,, but the rest of the trip I made it a point to find other, large groups to overnight with.
I just love the noises.. the bags, zips, crunching on the ground..... get that tarp up cos the rain or a crackling fire are the best. Enjoy my friend 😊
There shouldn't have been any guessing. The packet has what's inside it literally printed on the packet and the box it came in. You can't screw up chili. Believe me, the military has tried. Even the T-Pack chili is good. I actually had a soldier eat 6 MRE's in less that three hours (3500 calories each), then asked "what's for lunch" Great video. Thanks
And why doesn't that surprise me (the 6 MREs in three hours)? When I was in the military (Austria) we didn't have your fancy MREs. We got either warm rations (when the field kitchen was out) or cold ones. The cold ones were actually better. Warm was almost always some sort of stew with fatty and gnarly meat and half cooked potatoes with some spices that would clear you out like a yard sale. I even preferred the NRG5 style emergency rations to the cooked stuff. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. Once a week there was "Grenadiers march" on the menu where they threw in all the leftovers of the week they thought to be still edible. Yeah, if you were wise, you'd rather go hungry. I don't think they even tried to produce something palatable. But sometimes we were lucky and there were things on the menu you just can't screw up, like beans and sausages or macaroni with tomato sauce and meatballs (we weren't so sure where the meat came from, but what the heck...). So we always looked forward to cold rations. That was usually some bread rolls, a can of meat or cheese spread (commercial) and / or air dried sausages, jam or honey and some chocolate or müsli bars. We ALWAYS had some dudes who after finishing their ration for the whole day in one sitting and then went around the company looking if they could scrounge some more.

Lota years ago. Seriously injured my back. Abject agony that first day. Strangely, it was the back pack that did most of the healing. Old aluminum frame back pack 25 to 35 pounds in it. For a nearly 3 month long summer adventure. The frame shaped my back, proper posture, straps positioned shoulders,, and exercise. The back pack cured it.
After Hurricane Iniki on Kauai, those MRE's tasted pretty darn good. And it was really special to have it served up by our "saviors" the National Guard.

Just Like with Tony, I appreciate it when you take the time to talk about movies and shows you've watch recently. Good to hear opinions from the general-audience type person. Sometimes listening to fellow movie-fans can be overwhelming.
It has been what is considered a mild summer this year in Texas with only a few weeks of 100+ degree weather as opposed to months of that. I too am greatly looking forward to cooler weather. I am heading to the mountains this Labor Day weekend to hopefully get a taste of fall temps at night. Have a great day and thank you for being a great source of peace for me every week. I hope to one day meet you and shake your hand.
In 1969 I went through survival school in Little Creek VA before shipping out to Nam with the Brown Water Navy. The C-ration they gave me after being liberated from the POW camp was Spiced Beef. I've never been as sick off of a military ration as that one. Still have that P38 can opener. MRE's much improved.
Always great content. Appreciate your honest opinions on gear and food, not a corporate yes man trying to sell me a product. Enjoy to watch you when a product totally surprises you and surpasses your expectations. Thanks so much.
Thoroughly enjoyed your adventure. Appreciate all the hard work you put into all your videos. They are a welcome respite from the madness going on in the world.
True story. I just got back from a camping trip yesterday, and I had that same mre menu. It was tasty but I had bubble guts for quite a while. I feel your pain lol. Love the channel sir.
The concept of the military carrying everything in a pack for hundreds of miles is a romantic holdover from pre-20th century. You may go on a few humps (yomps, ruck march), just for conditioning purposes, or your operators/elites may need to carry all of that crap for long endurance missions, but conventional ground forces will have a bivouac location. You're not going far with 80 or 100lbs on your back on top of your gear and weapon. You'll drop it and set up, then head out with a patrol pack with basics for your mission duration. Or you're taking some kind of helo, Osprey or vehicle to a FOB or wherever you're operating from, and that'll carry the bulk of your gear. Anyone doing a 5-20 mile hike with a pack full of old surplus gear is insane. There's photographic and video evidence from the Boer Wars, all the way to now. You don't see grunts carrying massive packs while patrolling or assaulting a position.
I highly recommend The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare with Henry Cavill and Alan Ritchson… great WWII movie, funny, action story that inspired Ian Flemming to create Agent 007 and write Casino Royale 10 years after this true story! Thanks for the adventure as always, Brother! Keep ‘em coming! Strength & Honor
I was in the Army when MRE's were still new-ish. Food poisoning was not uncommon, they didn't have heaters, some of the meals were dehydrated, nasty AF. It's where I learned to love Texas Pete hot sauce, we dumped it in everything. Apparently the military got smart and started putting Tobasco in the meals but that was after my time.
MRE yep meal rejected by everyone . Seeing that MRE made me laugh, late hubby and I Ihad days of no power constantly in that tiny apartment so tried them all. We did also a Tent set up in that apartment too. The yellow blowup up military boat was the best joke when coming home from work seeing that fully filled boat in the front room. The 1990s were fun moments. Thank you Luke for reminding me of FUN TIMES with military surplus.
Seeing you set up your portables is a true treasure. I can't wait to buy my portables. The only thing I wonder about is pitching the tarp. I want to do a damn good job
Instead of direct, ambient lighting would suffice Luke, it would keep that LED lamp away from your face and still allow us to see you, just saying. Military surplus gear is well worth the money for what your getting, tough as nails, heavy or not, tried and true. Good luck with the MRE. Nice outing it seemed, cool and refreshing. Thanks for the video.
An MRE has got to be lighter then a VietNam era "Meal, Combat, Individual" (sometimes called C-Rations). EVERYTHING except the "accessories" were in metal tins.
I went to colorado for a 10 day elk hunt and brought nothing to eat but MRE. I took Everything out of the main packaging to make it smaller. Wasn't the best but probably better than eating mountain house meals. food was heavy but the beauty was my pack got lighter after each meal. I still maintained a sub 40lb pack.
Brother I know they put the tear tabs at the top of the MRE package but the way we open them in the military is along the long edge. no he put it all in a large clear plastic zip lock bag not the MRE bag.

Hapiness 😂 is what that cup of cofee would give me
A high-quality camera captures stunning landscapes, just as they appear in Latvia.
Thanks Luke! Hope your back is better soon!
You are one brave man
I use to break into my dad's MREs and eat all the cookies. I think they had M&Ms. I ate those too .
I love you yanks! You are bonkers!
I've met many people from many different coutures, but you guys seem a different breed. Respect 🙏
Thanks Luke. I like the chats with you. I’m not crazy, but I do find myself replying to you as if you could hear me. 😂😂
USN vet myself, thank your Daughter for her service. I was on the USS America during Vietnam, then became a Plank Owner of the USS Nimitz when we cross-decked. She’s a great ship. AQ1, Aviation Fire Control is my name.
Thanks for the great video! Hope the back feels better soon.
Thank you for your service
thank your daughter foe her service, another great video,,
Just Like with Tony, I appreciate it when you take the time to talk about movies and shows you've watch recently.
Yet over here down under, winter temperatures high 20s(mid 80 Fahrenheit) today 31 degrees. Beach weather in winter.
I like your style of "toast", keep it up.
Thank you
59 degrees!! That made me happy hearing that fall is coming.
Ham and Limas Brother. Good for setting expectations when you're new in-country
Brilliant to show the materiality of fog with light. Salutations du Québec.
A very enjoyable trip .. thank you ..
Always great content. Appreciate your honest opinions on gear and food, not a corporate yes man trying to sell me a product. Enjoy to watch you when a product totally surprises you and surpasses your expectations. Thanks so much.
Great choice of cutting the trail short when you have back hurt…
Thoroughly enjoyed your adventure. Appreciate all the hard work you put into all your videos. They are a welcome respite from the madness going on in the world.
The Barred Owl is my favorite out in the woods
True story. I just got back from a camping trip yesterday, and I had that same mre menu. It was tasty but I had bubble guts for quite a while. I feel your pain lol. Love the channel sir.
Luke, you can keep the coffee but the Stanley cook set is great!
Twisters was actually pretty good. I grew up with the first as well. This new one actually might be better than the first.
I love that screen opening effect Luke!
Don't just watch Luke, go outside and become Luke!
Love all your videos Luke.
05:45 wake-up?
Heck no. One of the great things about camping is sleeping in.
Generally speaking Lukes videos intrigue me but the military gear tests really are enjoyable. Keep up the good work. The Outdoor Gear Review rocks. 🤩
I recognize that campsite. Such a pretty place.
What a beautiful forest, we don't have these here in Brazil
French roast tasters choice instant is my preferred poison. It's the cat's meow! 😅
Caught a new vod during work on my lunch break?? Perfect timing! Love youe vidoes as always!
Seeing you set up your portables is a true treasure. I can't wait to buy my portables. The only thing I wonder about is pitching the tarp. I want to do a damn good job
You wouldn’t believe the looks I get when people see me hiking with a twelve pack of beer and a dozen eggs 🍺
I've packed in one of those 5 liter mini-kegs, 3 miles. Yes it was worth it. 🤣🤣🤣
Sounds great 👍
Instead of direct, ambient lighting would suffice Luke, it would keep that LED lamp away from your face and still allow us to see you, just saying.
C-Rats were so good! ✌🏽
