Yep, I was there on that day !!! Flew all the way from France, with Mick Doohan in the same flight as me from Bangkok to Brisbane, we took a picture together at the airport a few days earlier (no selfies at that time)... Brought back to France the Tech 3 pit box sign of Olivier Jacques as a souvenir, still hanging in my garage !!! At the end of the 250 race, I ran on the track with some crazy Italian fans to congratulate Max Biaggi being 250 world champion... During the same trip, I drove to Phillip Island for the WSBK the following week-end where the "Go show" won both races. Got to say, till today, 1996 remains the only year that MotoGP & WSBK races happened in Australia one week apart !!!
Great day none the less, Gary McCoy won the 125s, good to see Wayne Rainey on the podium for Yamaha, and the next weekend down at Phillip Island Troy Corser won the World Superbike Championship, I got a shirt from his mechanic and got Foggy and Slightys autograph on it

I was at Eastern Creek that day and that prang happened right in front of me.. Creville was lucky he wasn't lynched by the crowd.. of course most of us didn't see Mick giving him a hard time in the lead up to it :)
Not really. The best bike (i.e. the Honda at this time, winning 13/15 races) tended to dominate way more than now; and as you see in this video the backmarkers were so far off the pace that they got easily lapped. Right now, the rider has more determination on who wins.
@@Thiswasmeanttobeeasy I think the tires rules are wonderful. You'd have crazy gaps between the various manufacturers, sometimes lasting years. And John Kocinsky mentioned in an interview that slower riders were tempted to use softer tires than prudent. Most highsides of that era happened when tires went off later in the race, whereas now the single tire manufacturer specifies a minimum soft tire.
@@christiangramiz8246 Is it worth it to spend three years in 250 cc when you were getting podiums in MotoGP? I just don't think so. And he was already a lower class champion. There was no need to go back. And has Capirossi ever finished above Biaggi in any championship? Seems like he always lost to Biaggi forever. Weird that one managed to spend 14 seasons in MotoGP while the other only got 8.
This was my childhood, watching with my parents every weekend. I remember this race to this day.
Doohan: "you won't pass me from the outside"
Criville: "then none of us will win"

Love those 2 strokes! I love modern GPS too… but what a great era!
Also in this incident Doohan was mad-aggressive. A little too much so IMO.
Damn the MotoGP bikes in the 500cc era were awesome!
I 💙 these back in the day highlights 😃👍🇺🇸🏍🏁
I still have this on video tape complete with Barry sheens and big Daryl eastlake commentating, few words by mick in the pits after the race too
Now I'm gonna search for the interviews after this race
There is a video of them talking in the pits after.

Stessa squadra infatti 😅
Man, these camera angles make Eastern Creek look so damn fast.
It’s not the angles… it’s the 500s

How insane would turn 1 at SMSP be on the new GP bikes!!!🤤😮💨😮💨
Good. Thanks.
No aero, no electronics, just pure skill. Wish the electronics were banned in MotoGP....
Love the community. Vid is out 4 minutes ago and already 400 views
Doohan and criville are way more faster than other riders💪😊
Them days.
Loris capirossi💪💪
Bad profile picture. The miserable Petroldass bike😌😌
Brilian 🔥
Loris Capirossi's season was destimated at the first turn here last year.
這是criville 的錯,他要進不進的,猶豫一下,導致撞車。
事後,西班牙車迷暴動,大家衝到hondapit,要doohan 給個交待,隨後的頒獎臨時取消。
Doohan 被直升機給載走。
車迷佔據跑到,久久不散。晚上大家集結在據說是Doohan 下榻飯店前抗議,要他出來交待。
當晚,criville ,像大眾喊話,希望此事件平息。
