Airforce: We need a plane that can land on an unfinished trail on the side of a mountain while carrying a bunch of stuff we don't want anyone to know about. Fairchild: Hold my beer. Truth is, the specs for this plane was born in the Korean war and operated in some of the most remote places on Earth. Its done fantastic work both as a humanitarian platform and military aircraft. It doesn't get the credit it deserves.
Several jumps from a C-123: Major General pilot showed up to drop us once, and at first sight it looks like a C-130 (best) approaching. The 2Stars left engine was breaking apart in flight and red hot pieces of fins, from the turbine, were coming in the back door, burning the rubber floor. Glad to jump out... hope they made it back to the Air Force Base. 🛰️ ☄️ 🙇🙊🇺🇸
@@harleyb.birdwhisperer Never heard that one. I was told they were designed TO REPLACE GLIDERS such the Horsa which was a real POS. Never jumped the jet-equipped model. They weren't around in 1962.
@@JohnMoore-xf5wy if you hunt a bit on the web, you can find a pic of the prototype C-123 with no engines. I added it to a 50th anniversary reminisce I wrote in 2019..
I made parachute jumps out of them in 1970. Great short landing and take off aircraft, with JATO assist. They were great support for Special Forces.
Back in 68 to 69 I worked on “The White Whale” when stationed in TSN. The only 123 without camouflage.

The Fairchild C123 was used in Conair as well
I half a half dozen jumps from them at Bragg in 1962.
Great airplane!
I was able to see these aircraft in operation while stationed in the ROK. 😉

I remember C 123 training for Ranch hand on range 52 Eglin AFB 1964.
I always wanted one of those!
Aren’t they awesome?
These were designed as gliders, had a succession of engines hung on them. I crewed them in Viet Nam.
Designed to REPLACE WW II gliders.
Not AS GLIDERS.
@@JohnMoore-xf5wy Yes, AS GLIDERS. The engines came later (B models), then the jets (K models).
