  • 3DFoil is used to design and analyze a jib an main sail. More information about 3DFoil can be found at: www.hanleyinnovations.com/3dfo....
We use the following steps to setup the analysis:
    1. Enter the parameters for the jib. This surface has a span of 4.8 m; a left chord of 1.5 m; a tip chord of 0.05 m. A sweep of zero degrees is applied at the trailing edge.
    2. Enter the main sail. This surface has a span of 6.7 meters; a left chord of 2.6 m; a tip chord of 0.05 m. A sweep of zero degrees is applied at the leading edge.
    3. A reflection boundary condition is applied at y=0 to model the deck.
    4. Preliminary results are obtained using an angle of attack of 10 degrees and wind speed of 8 mph.
    5. The jib is modified using a NACA 5501 airfoil at the root chord (left chord).
    6. Results show the forces acting on the jib and main sail.
