Jokes aside, it’s actually refreshing how this show portrays friendships. I haven’t seen such intimate friendships between male characters from other kids shows like this. Or even male/female characters without becoming romantic. Even Hater who has clear toxic masculinity has affectionate moments with Peepers. And even despite how jokey it can get, it’s still sweet to watch. I think it comes from just how earnest Wander is with everything.

Apparently in the episode where Sylivia and Hater went on a date, Wander was supposed to be in Sylvias place, but they scratched that because then there wouldn’t be any conflict, because Wander wouldn’t have had any problems going on a date with Hater.

The art style, rapid animation, shading and details, their designs, unconventional characters and ideas, the comedy, the jokes they got a way with and did "They made butt and fart jokes funny for an entire episode! That's illegally blasphemous in media and comedy!", the characters, the classic adventure of the week structure and the wholesome simplicity of the situation and characters just going on their journey as usual. Forget MLP, Regular Show and Adventure Time, THIS is the kids show adults needed to grow an empire of a fanbase around. Regular Show has the same episode structure cause it's fun and ok to break up for bigger plots once in a while. Wander doesn't even see Lord Hater as an enemy and never fights him. He's just himself and play with him, and ends up winning. How is that not a greater message to teach about being yourself to literal haters and an unfriendly environment while opening up to those willing to be friends, rather than just friendship is magic? Wander Over Yonder shows you and teaches you how it's done like a pro. And being completely silly about it for fun. And they don't even talk about it.

So, here is an interesting little fact. The Zbornaks are a reference to Dorothy Zbornak from the sitcom Golden Girls. Sylvia has a similar personality to Bea Arthur's character. This is further emphasized with Sylvia's mother having the name Dorothy. Golden Girls, a show about four retired women in Florida, is beloved by queer people for how friendly both the show and the creators were to queerness and even going as far as tackling the issues the queer community faced in the 1980s. Which really adds another dimension to the overall queer appeal of Wonder Over Yonder, in my humble opinion. If anyone is curious, I recommend Matt Baume's video about the Golden Girls and also watch the show itself.

It seems to me that Disney missed these moments because he thought that since it was a children's show, there would be nothing like that and there was no strict censorship (as, for example, with Gravity Falls). And you know what? I'M DAMN GLAD OF IT
Disney allowed these moments because they're just instances of the characters being goofy, not things that were seriously meant to be LGBT+ rep. Anything that would've read as genuinely and overtly implying that a character was queer would not have been allowed; for example, in the original script for The Night Out, Dominator made a raunchy lesbian joke that would have legit implied that she's into women despite it just being a corny _"I hardly know her!"_ joke, and it wasn't kept in the final script, most likely in part due to Disney's homophobic censorship. The punchline for a lot of these silly scenes is that moments are played out _as if_ romantic/flirtatious or something _(e.g., spin the bottle, a destruction __-wedding-__ ceremony, etc.),_ even though they're not. The joke isn't that they're gay or look it, because that's not a ridiculous thing to be by any means, the joke is that they're behaving in such a silly/unexpected way in the given situations. All of these scenes could _absolutely_ point to the characters being queer _(and in a few of them, that actually _*_was_*_ part of their intent),_ but that's not why the scenes exist, and all that's just arbitrary, hence why Disney didn't blow a gasket over it. The characters' orientations and genders are all open to fan interpretation, and the woy crew majorly supports reading them as queer! (Technically, Dominator and Awesome are meant to be viewed that way, since they were envisioned as being lesbian and "omni-sexual", respectively. They're the only ones meant to be any specific sexuality ^^) I hope all this makes sense.

So, here is an interesting little fact. The Zbornaks are a reference to Dorothy Zbornak from the sitcom Golden Girls. Sylvia has a similar personality to Bea Arthur's character. This is further emphasized with Sylvia's mother having the name Dorothy.
Golden Girls, a show about four retired women in Florida, is beloved by queer people for how friendly both the show and the creators were to queerness and even going as far as tackling the issues the queer community faced in the 1980s. Which really adds another dimension to the overall queer appeal of Wonder Over Yonder, in my humble opinion.

It seems to me that Disney missed these moments because he thought that since it was a children's show, there would be nothing like that and there was no strict censorship (as, for example, with Gravity Falls). And you know what? I'M DAMN GLAD OF IT
Disney allowed these moments because they're just instances of the characters being goofy, not things that were seriously meant to be LGBT+ rep. Anything that would've read as genuinely and overtly implying that a character was queer would not have been allowed; for example, in the original script for The Night Out, Dominator made a raunchy lesbian joke that would have legit implied that she's into women despite it just being a corny _"I hardly know her!"_ joke, and it wasn't kept in the final script, most likely in part due to Disney's homophobic censorship. The punchline for a lot of these silly scenes is that moments are played out _as if_ romantic/flirtatious or something _(e.g., spin the bottle, a destruction __-wedding-__ ceremony, etc.),_ even though they're not. The joke isn't that they're gay or look it, because that's not a ridiculous thing to be by any means, the joke is that they're behaving in such a silly/unexpected way in the given situations. All of these scenes could _absolutely_ point to the characters being queer _(and in a few of them, that actually _*_was_*_ part of their intent),_ but that's not why the scenes exist, and all that's just arbitrary, hence why Disney didn't blow a gasket over it. The characters' orientations and genders are all open to fan interpretation, and the woy crew majorly supports reading them as queer! (Technically, Dominator and Awesome are meant to be viewed that way, since they were envisioned as being lesbian and "omni-sexual", respectively. They're the only ones meant to be any specific sexuality ^^) I hope all this makes sense.
