  • Luciano has spent 6 years in-and-out of prison, both juvenile and adult.
    He's now getting the help he needs, with reading, and is trying to get his life on track.
    He is a Black trans man working and living in Oakland while also recovering from surgery. Recently he was laid off because of the pandemic.

    I work with students who have difficulty reading. Hearing this young man speak so well about his learning and his goals makes me have hope the future. Early identification is key. Kids need to learn to read by 3rd grade. That’s the goal. Good luck to you!

    Thanks for sharing this with us at today's IDAO Right to Read Symposium Kareem! Your talk was powerful and inspired me to not wait another minute before finding allies and doing things differently than what got us to where we are now. Your goal for 100% is my goal as well.

    Yes! You are not alone. ♥️ you are obviously intelligent and need to learn the way you learn. Our family knows intimately the school to prison pipeline. You are going to do big things. You have to, for our young children too. 70% of kids in juvenile home are dyslexic. They have dealt with the social and societal pressures of being told to do the same things over and over, that they cannot do. Simply because they do not learn the same way. It is humiliating, demeaning and ultimately kills self confidence. Thank you
