Abraham Lincoln when he met Stowe said she was "the little woman who started the big war" It is painful to hear about slavery but important to study history from people who experienced that time in history. I like to clean my house and cook while I listen and at 70 I don't read too much because of eye strain, this is a great recording , thank you!

      @@rodionraskolnikov3853
There are various types of slavery. Not every type of slavery is inherently wrong.
Chattel slavery, the type that was practiced in the American south, is wrong because it denies the fundamental right to freedom and self determination that all human beings have. No human being has the right to own another human being as if they were a thing, like a piece of furniture, an appliance, or a kitchen utensil.
There are other types of slavery that are not as bad, such as making criminals work because they owe a debt to society or to their victims or because it costs money to keep them incarcerated. Chattel slavery was outlawed by the 13th amendment but this type of slavery is allowed. Of course like just about everything else, there’s a potential for abuse.
There’s also indentured servitude where you owe someone money so you agree to work for them for a specified length of time. It’s debatable whether or not that’s actually slavery.
There’s a type of slavery that was practiced in ancient times that is similar to indentured servitude where, for whatever reason, whether you’re indebted to them or it’s the spoils of war or you want to marry their daughter (like in Genesis where Jacob wanted to marry Rachel) you work for them for a specified length of time and at the end of the term you’re given a choice to be set free or to be their slave for the rest of your life. If you decide that you want to remain their slave, they may give you a tattoo, pierce your ear as a type of brand and you belong to them and they take care of you. You’re their slave but it was voluntary.
This isn’t every type of slavery. There’s also the type that was practiced in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome and elsewhere. Just about every culture has had slavery in one form or another. Some still do. The thing that’s wrong about it is the denial of freedom and autonomy.
How many people are self righteous in their condemnation of George Washington and other founding fathers for having slaves when it was considered acceptable yet they buy stuff that’s made in China?

@Jon James i agree. My racist 'friend" in texas is black and called himself an "uncle tom" a few times, but stopped after I got serious about how different he was to the character. Sometimes he uses Malcolm X's death as an excuse for him to say he's at extra risk if he doesn't act like a racist asshole.
He's just an asshole using any excuse he thinks he can to get away with his actions. No racism, pure humanity, i think. even racism is really just something ppl believe is popular and socially acceptable that can be manipulated.

I am shocked and just noticed all these reply messages , thinking I mean the blacks brought Shame to American history!!!! No freaking way! How in Gods Name could the victims of racism and greed and cruelty bring shame to a country. The perpetrators who are a disgrace to humanity bring shame to their country.
To exploit and abuse another race for ones benefit, be it of any colour is a disgrace. We are all different colour flowers of the same garden, and weaves of one sea.

@Patrick Vail.....I haven't lived for 71 years and not learned a few things in this life! When someone as stupid, or ignorant as Daniel Cordero says...'shaking my head......the blacks bring shame to America,' IT IS RACIST! WTBS.....I KNOW EXACTLY HOW SOME WHITE PEOPLE HATE HISPANICS.....THE SAME WAY THEY HATE BLACK PEOPLE!! SIN HAS NO SKIN COLOR; but when someone starts throwing stones at Black People, trying to place the blame on us for how AmeriKKKa stinks...I am going to put it all into equal, fair perspective! Check history.....YOU WHITE PEOPLE HAVE DONE MAJOR ATROCITIES IN YOUR PERSECUTION OF ALL PEOPLE OF COLOR TO PROMOTE YOUR AGENDA TO PLACE YOURSELVES IN A SUPERIOR POSITION!!!! Now....Patrick.....if you don't fit that description....Praise God....and excuse yourself from this comment section! What I find interesting, is that you berate and condemn me....but you don't condemn Daniel Cordero for his racist statement! So...that tells me that you agree with him!! I don't have to judge ANYONE! 'Out of the mouth flows the issues of the heart.' Whatever you think you are hiding in your heart; will eventually escape out of your mouth! Soooooo....when white people hear the truth about themselves....THEY DON'T LIKE IT.....AND I DON'T CARE! I don't think I am any better than anyone else; but I am not scared to speak the truth when lies are spoken! And.....you know.....NOBODY CAN WALK ON WATER.....BUT JESUS CHRIST.....MY SAVIOR.....MY REDEEMER........THE FORGIVER OF MY SINS.....AND THE SINS OF ALL MANKIND! So to use that example to ridicule me is weak....NEVER, NEVER, EVER, COMPARE ANYONE ELSE TO JESUS CHRIST....BECAUSE HE IS HOLY....AND WITHOUT SIN! I don't judge or hate Danny, You or anyone else. WHAT I DO JUDGE....IS RIGHT FROM WRONG!! AND WHAT I DO HATE.....IS THE SIN/LIE THAT IS PERPETUATED BY RACIST STATEMENTS SUCH AS THAT OF Daniel Cordero......AND YOUR TOLERANCE OF THAT STATEMENT!

Great book, really shows the horrible things we Southerners did. I am sorry for the past, though I cannot change it, but I am glad that something somewhat good came out of that horrible act. Our country would be nowhere near as powerful, developed, or great without the labor of those poor humans. I just hope God can forgive our country. We need it in these times.

Thank you for acknowledging our ancestors hard work, sacrifice and loyalty to God. Their faith brought us through the valley of the shadow of death. I know we can get out of the belly of today's beast, identity politics. So long as all other minorities are recognized for uplift with specific policies but specific policies for Black people are "unconstitutional," ain't nothing changed much. We need #Reparations for this injustice to our ancestors and institutional systemic RACISM instituted in 1912 by Pres Woodrow Wilson continuing through State genocide and economic inequality.

Hello... This is human history/worldhistory still in the making. Slavery was once an accepted form of commerce worldwide. All races of people had slaves of not only other races but even their own. The United States was the first country in human history to make slavery illegal. Slavery still exists in our world til this very day, yet we want to dwell on the misconstrued past of this beautiful country. Why place or accept blame for things we have nothing to with? We must thank the past regardless of perspective. Let's move on. The time is now. Peace and Blessings

This is my third time listening to/reading this novel and it still makes me livid. The irony that a pro-abolition novel fails to acknowledge black people as humans but proceeds to call us “creatures” is disgusting and very telling of how we’re seen today.

    • @justinkatsel8927
      @justinkatsel8927 4 года назад +8

The word creature in middle English has the definition of a created being. Creature was used in the King James bible to describe all humans as created beings. The word creature also has a meaning of someone who is subservient to another. No matter which definition was intended (it may also depend on the character who says the word in the book), it fits the context of the book. The book is historical fiction after all. I do not believe the author's intent was to dehumanize African Americans. On the contrary, what I gain from the book is their humanity. She does call uncle Tom the hero of the story. The thing that makes me livid is the attitude of Marie St Claire. Who does not think that her slaves are capable of feelings as she is. In this narrative I think the authors intent is to debunk the dehumanization of the slaves by showing their humanity and their suffering. This book opens all kinds of emotions for me. Anger, excitement, joy, and sadness to name a few. God bless you.

    • @zenobiafenrick9603

Justin Katsel She meant “creature” in the same way that black people were seen as 3/5 of a person. That is obvious in which she only uses that word to refer to some black characters. The white characters she calls men, women, child, etc. Again, a white woman who thinks she’s progressive for believing black “creatures” shouldn’t be enslaved, while she is perpetuating the very stereotypes of black people during that time that were (and still are) damaging. Using the context clues surrounding the text is evident of this. Also, I’m an atheist, but thank you.

@@theguyyamamabefuckinsometi1198 Stowe told the story as it was. She wanted everyone to see what really went on. You can't tell this awful story all santitized according to our sensibilities. Cut out the bad language and inhuman treatment and what have you got? A Jim Crow fairy tale. Stowe was a feminist and an abolitionist. She wanted her readers to hate slavery and respect all human beings. It seems like you have problems with that.

Check out www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/54812 "A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin", in which Stowe justified her portrayals with extensive documentation. It's not the most pleasant reading, but very informative.
