- Today we get to put a BMW E92 M3 to the test to see if it is a worthy successor in the M3 lineage! Arguably the last of the raw and great M cars, before the days of turbos and full electronic everything. So, from the eyes of someone who has owned countless pre 2000s BMWs, where does the mighty V8 E92 M3 stand? How does it feel compared to the older cars? Lets find out......

I am an old school BMW guy too. I’ve had E30s, E36 M3, still own my E39 M5, and own a Manual E92 M3. Also have a Z4M Coupe. There isn’t enough space on a RUclips comment to say how much I love these cars, but essentially they are the final evolution of the classic high revving, nimble, but usable M car ethos. Of all the cars I’ve owned, it still gives me the most thrill and chills flat out. The older cars have charm and character that I adore, but the E92 is king when it comes to performance and thrill. The tingles at 8400 RPM are like no other.

Great video, I love mine. Another fun fact about the E9X platform is that it is the last M car to have hydraulic steering giving it that distinct steering feel.

Yes sir!! Super happy to see the appreciation of the e9x M finally! I have one myself and have been following your channel for a little bit now. (just realized I wasnt subscribed, so I changed that) and I was waiting for the day you would drive one and have this exact same reaction lol. As far as DCT vs manual, I have DCT. Its phenomenal, but I would still go for a 6 Spd. Make sure you test both however. Its not as easy of a decision as you think. If you do go manual, theres a few options to make the shifter feel much, much better. I feel like the e9x m3 is the ultimate drivers car in all fascets. Satisfies all the senses lol.

I enjoyed the review thanks. My E90 M3 is a pleasure to drive at any speed and yet the moment you hit the M button it just gets better and better. Yeah and like you said it’s refined and beautiful. Handling, steering, sound, and braking is superb with a big brake kit. The V8 package at 3639 pounds is the real deal its smiles for miles. The car makes you feel so good. So does my first gen 987.1 Porsche Cayman S. Both cars have after market exhausts and what they lack in torque they’re awesome to drive and to own. Totally connected to the road. Electric vehicles forget about it.

6 speed or no speed especially in the e92, had both dct and 6 speed imo dct is smooth and quick and precise but come on who you kidding 6 speed all day unless you a women with high heels

The steering system is hydraulic and not drive by wire. It was the last M3 with hydraulic steering.

A very good review and a gorgeous car, even without the carbon roof. The E46 will forever be more special, but if you honestly compare the two, which one gives a more exhilarating driving experience?
And as someone that has had a beard for years, I understand that it's hard to leave it alone. 😄
Thats a very good question thats hard to answer. I haven’t driven my e46 in half a year so need to hop back in and recompare, but I think the e46 being a little older and nimbler makes up for the lesser power and makes it the more exhilarating car.
You can just let her sit at 5-7K rpm range in a lower than usual gear when tearing through the hills- at first feels unnatural but that's where the engine actually wants to be. I've had the privilege to drive a F360 Ferrari and this car is very similar in driving dynamic and rev ability (and sound tbh with my RPi exhaust) plus the horsepower between the two is very similar you just have to wind them out and get used to shelling out RPMS more than you normally would. Just got my e9x vert and dream about it when im not driving it.

I try to be in 3rd/4th but mine is 6mt. I think the dct cars handle cars better in 2nd/3rd for corners

I'm torn because it's obviously gonna be nicer than my 525i but it looks like an 09 accord
but my e34 has 240000 miles on it and so many more waiting to happen once I get new tires and address some nvh and cosmetic renewal stuff and even in automatic she still rips when she's woke up
Window switches are fine for me but I have long limbs and don't like seat back that far.
Had e93m nearly 4yrs now, murdered out with titanium exhaust (which is f**kn sick)
Luv driving manual shift but if you jack up the M settings in auto and plant your foot..

I love my kept E46 more than the E92 M3(so it's gone long ago). I have enough time sitting in a GT\coupe, I want my next fast car to be a real sports car design.

Love my e92 m3. Just put a harrop kit on it and I think it would make you look at the car differently. It's not an M5 but it's like 85% of it

@@DaleSteel Lol no it doesn't. Pretty obvious you've never even been in one. I get about 10 compliments everytime I drive the car. The harrop makes you realize how gutless and slow the s65 is NA and now the power matches the chassis.
I know you liked your e34 540I but have you ever tried a e39 540I 6? The m62 definitely has its problems. but my old 540I I still love dearly to this day!
Never have tried one. Truthfully wouldn’t care too. More issues in a chassis I don’t care for that much

I love them, but its more of a collector car that I don’t need at the moment. I have a far faster e34 anyway, so m5 would only really serve me for novelty purposes
First sports car I bought for my self my 2009 e93 M3 dct is the best car I have ever owned. I beat the snoot outs it and daily it. I forget all the time it goes to like 8k my brain is so use to like 6k in normal American v8's.

Nice ride but I’ll take my e34 5 speed hands down. I feel so connected to the road as opposed to new cars. The M50 is a top end performer you can’t appreciate until you’re past 75-80 mph. Hope all went well with your school work. Cheers, George

You've got lucky. That car has the individual audio system which is the best system bmw ever installed at 850watt. The loudest M4 system is only 650 watt
In pretty sure the m3 e9x dont have electric power steering, its hydraulic, i got a 335i and its hydraulic and its pretty heavy haha, some people think my ps isnt working but theyr just heavier from the factory.
Yup you are right, I was confused, some e92 models have electric apparently while M3 and 335 have hydraulic

Never replace. But have both? Absolutely haha
I did and have no regrets, there are really very few alternatives if you are looking for something slightly more modern and refined, but with all the analogue N/A goodness. (The steering is still hydraulic btw).
it's a very tough decision but the simple answer is what is the purpose of the car? The chassis, engine, space, driving position, interior quality, on track experience is all better in the e92. The E46 is a great car but it lives mainly in nostalgia for many people and I do believe it's a better looking car from the exterior and is aging like a fine wine. For a daily driver the E92 all day, for the track it's a coin toss, for weekend fun and garage queen - E46

I've owned an e60 x5m, f80 m3, and e92 m3. And when it came down to it, I kept my e92 over all of them. It's unique because of the engine sound and the high reviing motor.
The only cars that are similar are Porsche 911 gt cars, s2000, and similar gen M5/m6, and exotic cars like the Pagani zonda.
There something unique about the e9x platform that will go down in the history books similar to the e46 and E30 m3.
pretty much the s65 didnt have much torque thats why it wasnt as loved, had like the same torque as a n55 so i dont think its worth the 25k price tag used
n55 in my m235i is 330. so a bit more stock for stock than a s65
E46 is the end of the line for me. Would not getting anything newer than that. Also, iirc, the (poss fake) engine sound is pumped through the speakers.

the most heartbreaking thing is how i was told 6mt is better than dct. till i drove it. dct is INSANELY good and way better in these cars. i miss my e92 m3 and i definitely want to get another one.

@@m3nameisjosh464 its the way its feels! I've had the pleasure of driving the V10 m6. Amazing car but the gear box is horrific. The car kicks like a horse when you change gear and that whole letting off the throttle is horrifc. Very slow and cumbersome. Really impacts the acceleration.

V10 e46 😳😳😳but with DCT. Acceleration is beyond epic shifts are as smooth as pie. 100km to 200km 6.9.
The e92 m3 is one of favourite if not they best M car but its not a straight line car, it does 100km to 200km in 9sec. So this is a serious achievement for an NA car and all because you can put the power down with the right gear box. DCT all the way.
