  • There are lots of ways to decorate picture frames. Here's how to create a color inlay stripe in wood using epoxy and wood dye. Dyes are available in most colors, so you can create just about any color decorative stripe. Chris Marshall demonstrates full instructions for how to mix the dye solution and then mix in two-part epoxy.

It is easier to fill the groove with a 10 or 20cc syringe and a large gauge needle, (#16 or #14) would work nice

West System sells syringes for dispensing epoxy. They would make filling the grooves a piece of cake.

I cut the ends of my pop cycle sticks off with scissors to make them able to scrape the resin better in the cup in the stirring process, rather than the rounded ends they come with. (Give them a slight angle on the cut). Also, If you don't want to go to the trouble of getting syringes, one could make a very small funnel out of paper. Leave the tiny end closed off initially when you're making the funnel, then snip off the appropriate amount of the tip to allow for the proper flow.

Mike Welch can never understand why the sticks have round edges, square ends seem alot better to me..

As far as I'm aware water is not the best thing to put into your epoxy o.O

Fire Crow's Workshop agreed. Alcohol would have been the better choice

The label on the dye says, "water soluble dye". Go back and watch the video again.

Cool idea. I think a disposable eye dropper or pipette might make quick work of filling the grooves.

I plan to paint my kitchen cabinets white and affix a sheet of copper to the flat front surface on the doors within the area of the decorative trim. I would like to create black or bronze epoxy pinstripe channels on the inside surface between the copper and the wood trim on the doors. I will also be creating an epoxy pinstripe channel around the outside area of the trim close to the edge of the door. I may also cut a decorative design kerf tunnel on the copper face to fill with the colored epoxy.
Because of the raised trim of the door, I will not be able to use a planer to remove the excess epoxy on the pinstripes after they cure. How do I do this without a planer? I will be painting the cabinets before filling the epoxy tunnels so I need a technique that will not mar the paint.
Also, I will not be able to use a table saw to cut the 1/8 inch kerf. Do you have suggestions on an alternative method to cut the kerf?

Lorna G router the channel with a guide. you could inlay a solid instead of epoxy as I cannot think of a way to get rid of overspill without planing or sanding. could you mask off the inlay and paint after?
