I have tried to throw off the hump, but when I wire off, I ALWAYS cut a hole in the base. How can I visually tell, without measuring, how far down l need to go to gauge where to cut? When I watch you wire off a piece, it always seems to close to the shape's base, but it is always perfectly cut, to make a foot.

You need to establish your bottom, and what I consider “the floor” of the hump. Basically think of the top of the hump as if you were throwing off the wheel. If you look at 4:46, this is the foundational form. He has about half a centimeter (1/4 inch) of clay between the “bottom curve” of the cup and the top of the hump. That is his foot, we can imagine then that the inside bottom of his cup is at least to the top of the foot. Then when he cuts off the hump he has that cm (1/4 inch) of clay as a safety zone. Since he cuts as far down as possible, this clay he then later trims to a clean foot. If you don’t want such a high foot. You can cut half ways (or more, depending on how comfortable you are) into that safety zone and trim the rest off later. Hope that helps.
