@@Jeremy-jm3fe Well... Yes and no, Gordon didn't have to be THAT obesse, but remember his condition was genetic, he wasn't meant to be built like a soldier or athlete, he couldn't help it.
***** Ratings, partially due to it getting timeslot fucked on it's network. Never really took off until after it aired, and now it has a cult following. I do agree though this episode left me wanting more, and it's sad it got cancelled when it did.
Not only that but he finally feels like he fits in somewhere with people who accept him for who he is and don't see him as some sort of loser or failure. Great scene.
Daniel thought of himself as a loser while the geeks thought of him as cool. While the nerds thought of themselves as losers while Daniel who was cool looked up to the for being smart and interesting. They each looked up to each other in some way.
While it is tragic that this show only last one season, I’m this was the conclusion to Daniels character. He is a guy isn’t expect to have the brightest future which is why he constantly gets into trouble. He’s seen as the cool guy who goes to party and gets girls yet he’s had the most fun playing dungeon and dragon with a group of nerds. He felt accepted for being himself.
It wasn't a scene about acceptance, Daniel isn't secretly a nerd or anything. It's more like there isn't any pressure to put up a tough guy facade in front of these kids, so he can actually relax and try something new. He's being less restrictive, which was the biggest issue that was holding him back in school. Being lazy and cutting classes because he thinks no one had faith in him. The "don't expect me to be good at it or anything" was especially sad, and all too common with teenagers.
@@Jeremy-jm3fe' Don't expect me to be good at it or anything ' is something that follows a lot of people through adult life too, when they never seem to find that self esteem they so desperately need. Sadly.
I agree. He had been floating around the whole series, lacking direction and seeming generally dissatisfied with life. But it seemed like in the last episode he found something that was going to boost his confidence and make him happy.
God, this show is beautiful. I love that the kids they are showing act and feel so much like the ones I knew in high school. Much more dimensional than sitcom teens on cable.
@@nightmoose I think there is another scene between Daniel and Harris around the middle of the 18 episodes where Daniel asks Harris what he is reading (D+D book).
I love James Franco's facial expressions when he declares to the princess that the dragon has been slain. It's like for the first time, he's actually proud of himself for being good at something. Love this show. Too bad I only came about it a decade later!
I knew a guy like Daniel in high school. He was a couple of grades ahead: best looking dude, popular with the girls, always about to drop out. But he was always nice to us younger geeky types, even when everyone of his group was around, would even chat about Star Wars and video games for a bit after school. Nicest older student I ever met. Sadly became a homeless drug dealer a few years after; my friend saw him and recognised him and he was apparently as nice then as he was in school. Think he died a few years back after getting his life back on track and getting a family which is sad though, guess his past caught up with him.
To me this scene was the best part in the whole show. I always think about it when we show non-gamers games and then they become crackheads later for gaming.
Reminds me of my teenage years 2001-2007 when the LAN party scene was at its height (I'm talking old school LANs where the purpose was to shut out the rest of the world to play games together, not the new age LANs where people are essentially sitting side by side to play on the internet together). I daresay it was our generation's D&D due to how socially ostracizing and strange it was to the average person. But eventually we showed them the joys of CS 1.6 using the school computers and created a bunch of new gamers lol
I would have loved to see an episode where both groups of the Freaks and Geeks interact with each other like, they're stuck indoors due to a storm and they all bond over Dungeons and Dragons.
I love this scene so much-the unexpected bonding of different characters, the way the “Geeks” look up to Daniel even though he isn’t perfect and struggles w/self-esteem issues, the way Harris has no respect for Bill 😂, etc.
theres a scene in the season where it shows how hard Daniel's life is actually, his mom is forcing him to do things and he says i gotta go to school but she disregards it. Its a short scene but if you pay attention to that you can see how much he loves the escape from real life while playing D & D.
Makes him late for school Bc he has to get his dad’s meds, and Kim chews him out for being late because he had a book of her’s she needed. Daniel snaps and calls her a bitch. Lesson is that you never know what someone is going through.
Finally watched this show a few weeks back and fell in love with it. This scene really hit me hard, too, because the whole show, Dan's told what he can't be, and he suspects he can't be much of anything, and here, for a few hours a night, with these friends, he can be anybody. It's pretty light-hearted, but it's also an awesome ending for him.
I always loved how bill realizes he doesn’t have to have his guard up like he normally does with his friends. The freaks would make fun of or laugh at anyone showing any vulnerability. The geeks on the other hand encourage Daniel to try something new and support him as he learns the game. Through that we got a see a glimpse of who Daniel really is: a sweet, goofy, and polite young man who hasn’t been given the appropriate structure/guidance.
I adore the idea of one of the cool kids sitting down and learning how to play D&D with the outsiders, it’s the fantasy of a geek to discover that the things they enjoy can be loved by all if given the chance. We’re not terribly different after all.
My Mom and I had had a huge fight ... then over a strained dinner this (brand new) episode was playing. We laughed and maybe even cried. Great bonding with the parents - thanks Freaks + Geeks ... and Carlos.
If you are lucky and/or smart there comes a time when you learn that your world needs to expand. And that you'll be welcome in other groups. This was such an awesome show.
I actually find this episode to be one of my favorites because in high school D&D was considered to be the most geekiest thing something could play but the coolest guy here has decided to give it a try and enjoys himself. Also it seems like everyone loves this show. I loved it so much that i looked all over the internet for it to download and couldn't find it. I had to order it off ebay. Still waiting for it but will be worth it when i get it. Also found a cast photo all autographed (reproduction but who cares) Anyone who is interested you can find other freaks and geeks memorabilia on ebay.
No wonder everyone involved with this show became successful including writers and crew. It's bittersweet. I love and hate that it ended but there's no denying the beauty of this show.
My family and I watched this show together when it was brand new. We all loved it, particularly my dad who graduated in '78. One day, halfway through the series, my dad suddenly exclaims "wait... Sam is a BOY!?" He seriously thought JFD was a girl. I found that ridiculous at the time, but now, coming back 23 years later, I realize that yeah, JFD totally seems like a girl in this series. Reminds me of Millie Bobby Brown.
I am absolutely DYING from this comment because I watched this series with my sister when she was a teenager and I was about 7 and I also thought Sam was a girl until rewatching it as an adult. I just thought I was stupid but maybe I’m not as stupid as I thought 😂😂😂 even that part when he says “dwarfs are really good at finding jewels!” I can see how I totally thought he was a girl. And it IS sometimes kinda hard to tell before kids go through puberty and when they wear clothes that could honestly go either way.
Credit to Harris in this scene. Harris understands that D&D is for anyone and everyone. Any person willing to play is welcome to join a campaign and he approaches Daniel with magnanimity. No judgment, just a person wanting to play a TTRPG. The result is Daniel had a fantastic time and now might be a part of a campaign beyond a one-shot.

great ending for Daniel: He found his place where he's accepted no matter what and can has some fun, in the other hand the geeks finally found a way to be cool (more cool) and learn about girls and other stuff. I liked the conclusion of nick dancing disco music, but I would prefer the "best drummer in the world" backstory, I mean, just think about this: he joins in the army and meet musicians just like him: they wanna be professionals, grow and guess what, they need a drummer!. The finale with Ken saying "disco sucks" it's kind of cool but, what happened to his girlfriend? besides, he is the only character than we don't know much about his life and family like kim or daniel; and the lindsay and kim ending, it's good but looks a little forced. Well, maybe someone will read all this and think "who cares what you think?", Doesn't matter, I just finished the show 2 days ago and felt an empty sensation, like this HAS to continue, and I just wanted to write my thoughts. Yeah the end of the season was suppossed to be a cliffhanger for next season not a series finale but then the show got cancelled. I'm positive that Judd Apatow would have written a better ending than what we got.
I like the Kim and Lindsay ending but perhaps don't love it. I think Lindsay finding the Grateful Dead is, however, tremendous as she finally found the outlet she had needed to cope with the loss of her Grandmother. This didn't come out of nowhere. The insights received when Lindsay began hanging out with the freaks, and the different events that built upon it such as the punk show experience, led to this beautiful event
but holy shit..... so much potential character growth in all the chars... the freak delving into the geeky side of life, the nerdy kinda traditional main char girl going a bit crazy, etc the greatest show ever
I have a feeling that if this show continued that Daniel and Lindsey would actually become a couple and Daniel would completely change to become a geek.
that's not right....I always saw his freakishness as his best asset...you can't expect someone to change...although him bonding with lindsays brother would be cool cute if they were together but as it stands, its ironic...
kim made more sense and I like that Daniel and lindsey may never be more than friends but he also develops a real bond with her bro...it just is ironic in a way...everyone expects him to be her bf but in the end he becomes closer with her bro as they dont work out...I dont know....its not cliché that way..@@anaya8392
@@razkable I feel like Kim and Daniel were more toxic and they were both teenagers. I feel like if they wanted Daniels character to have growth, he would’ve been with Lindsay.

This didn't come out of nowhere. The insights received when Lindsay began hanging out with the freaks, and the different events that built upon it such as the punk show experience, led to this beautiful event
I loved it when Daniel hung out with the geeks. I wish they could have ventured more on that in season 2
This show is special. It really sucks that it got cancelled..
but holy shit..... so much potential character growth in all the chars... the freak delving into the geeky side of life, the nerdy kinda traditional main char girl going a bit crazy, etc the greatest show ever
i never saw this while it was on the air (i don't see much of anything) but i'm buying this on DVD, all seasons. thanks for putting this up.
God James Franco was gorgeous!
Yes he was c:
RedDragon45 still is
+Useless2112 what kind of question is that? He's Daniel!
+Nortapurr gay!
Nørtapurr My gay professor in linguistics has said "gay" has had several meanings. It's not always to do with the gender.
The DM in this scene, was one of the two directors of the new Dungeons and Dragons film. :D
I have a feeling that if this show continued that Daniel and Lindsey would actually become a couple and Daniel would completely change to become a geek.
that's not right....I always saw his freakishness as his best asset...you can't expect someone to change...although him bonding with lindsays brother would be cool cute if they were together but as it stands, its ironic...
actually you're sorta right because james franco himself said that him Daniel and Lindsey were actually supposed to end up together
kim made more sense and I like that Daniel and lindsey may never be more than friends but he also develops a real bond with her bro...it just is ironic in a way...everyone expects him to be her bf but in the end he becomes closer with her bro as they dont work out...I dont know....its not cliché that way..@@anaya8392
Alysa Spivak That would have been so sweet!
@@razkable I feel like Kim and Daniel were more toxic and they were both teenagers. I feel like if they wanted Daniels character to have growth, he would’ve been with Lindsay.
The last minute of this is probably the most heartwarming yet nerdy thing I've ever seen! -333
@0:34 I just realized Sam is about 3 inches away from Daniel as he talks about the sword being 3 inches away.. brilliant
