@demonofrazgriz333 Actually, coil guns do release high thermal energy, not only due to the electrical contact within the barrel, but because of the high initial velocity of the projectile causing severe friction with the air as it exits the barrel. Here, this thermal energy released happens to be in the form of sparks.

@Langaly Maybe it would be good to use something conductive that would slide between rails to accelerate projectile which would not be conductive. In that case it would remain in one piece :)

Not really because of the speed. The current plays an important role....I guess

It isn't because of the speed it turns into "plasma" . It depends on if the railgun, if it is one of those with foil around the projectile then the foil will turn into plasma which conducts the electricity. Those glowing sparks are superheated plasma.

gah cute! Wonder how'd it look like with paper caps and mot feed.. Btw how long do the rails hold? As for the projectile - does it get completely shattered?

Have you thought of firing ceramic projectiles? like marble? It should withstand the heat.

How much did this project end up costing you? I'm looking at building one myself for a school project.

Usually they shoot metal pellets. Like bullets but without the gunpowder.

  • @94thts

They shoot plasma. Metal which under very high voltages is turned to plasma and fired.

    但是有威力嗎?上面放的那張紙好像沒有破...

The projectile needs to be electrically conductive or it won't conduct the electricty that accellerates it.

you can see when it shoots at a paper, that it berly makes a small hole, if it could be any destructive, the goberment would ban it and take it away, for obvious reasons

make it bigger and put it on an old sherman tank

no it's not, coil guns don't produce sparks.
