STUDENT: I want to figure out what is keeping me from getting my alternate picking even faster.
    TOM HESS: Okay.
STUDENT: I guess specifically I want to do 150-160 BPM.
TOM HESS: Okay. Let’s see what you’ve got. - - - - Okay, I don’t think you really need to worry about increasing the speed at this time. I think what we need to do is just, take the speed you have and close the gap between being able to play it cleaner or in sync and bring that gap closer to where your current speed is at. So let’s go down to the 120 or whatever where you can really play very clean and let’s hear what you’ve got there. Let’s see how clean that is.
TOM HESS: Okay. Stop. I notice when you go from one pattern to the next, it’s not perfectly clean when you start, and I think that’s throwing off the synchronization a little bit on the rest. So let’s “accent” - what’s next, this one? Accent - hit that first one hard. Try that. Again - hard on the first note. Hard, hard, hard. Okay, when you go hard like that, I find that helps to establish the feeling again of being in sync. It’s kind of like if you start drifting off being in sync it kind resets yourself, it resets the feeling.
TOM HESS: Try that a little bit and play a little faster.
    STUDENT: Okay.
TOM HESS: Not that fast, not that faster. Just a little faster. Okay and I notice consistently you get choked up right here. You’re okay here, pretty good here, and right here it gets sloppier. I think that is because you’re putting a severe strain here. Try this. If you’re going to do this - you were here, you’ve got to be really careful that you get that. Just focus on this one.
TOM HESS: Okay part of the reason why maybe your sync is suffering is because you’re playing with this finger. Pick the finger up. This way you - don’t leave any fingers down. The index finger comes up. It will help you to feel the synchronization better.
    STUDENT: Okay.
TOM HESS: Good, that’s perfect picking. Now speed it up a little bit. Yeah this one is your weakness area here. Yeah, let’s try it with this finger here. Okay that’s not any better, let’s go back to this one. Okay just go ahead and do it a bunch of times. Yeah this is the weakest link in the whole chain of things. But basically you’ve just got to get the synchronization, so accent the first note. That’s the first suggestion, the other one is, pick that index finger up. That’s going to help you get the synchronization better. Once that happens, the existing speed that you have will be much more usable, okay?
TOM HESS: So in the end, the only thing that really matters is the speed you can use, not the speed you theoretically have. It’s the usable speed that we have. When you can stand up and perform for people, because that’s going to be the lowest speed of all the different ways you measure speed on the guitar. So if we can raise the speed at which things are in sync, then you can theoretically raise the speed at which you can perform it. I would worry about that way more than worrying about all the all out maximum speed. Okay?
    STUDENT: All right.
TOM HESS: These things are going to help push your maximum speed up anyway. All right?
    STUDENT: Hmm, hmm.
TOM HESS: Okay so that’s what you should do.

Thanks Tom. Just noticed that you and the student are using different picking technique in fundamental way: As you're aware, you are moving across strings (from high E string to low E string) using an up stroke - I guess like the Gambale technique, whereas the student is moving in all down strokes.. So, my question is, does this matter? Thanks.

It must be pretty difficult going in front of other people and only playing the stuff that you find you can't play ^^
