that's not really a retrospective about his journey with the guitar, it's actually an ad for his online course!

I've found that i really only need to use my thumb as support for barres.
If you're already playing in a position where you're comfortable with your thumb wrapped around the top you can use it to fret the low E string to make 5 finger chord shapes.
If you're playing in standard the C shape actually turns into a slidable chord that sounds good on every fret if you use your thumb to turn the E/A strings into a power chord (132013)

I started on a $16 dollar amigo acoustic with 5 strings. I played it for 3 years with no lessons. Before internet. No one around could play. I leaned to tune and play ear. Idk how I leaned to tune to standard it blows my mind. I was getting it turned after 6 months. But I wasn’t stepping down the 2nd from bottom string. I was tuning it to the 5th fret like all the strings and I wasn’t in standard. Than somehow by learning nirvana songs by ear I leaned to tune to standard and step down my last two strings to the 4th fret. Idk how I figured that all out as a kid in my own with nothing but a unplugged in New York nirvana cd and great southern trendkill pantera cd. Idk 🤷🏼‍♂️ On my 4th year at 14 years I got my first electric, it was a Washburn with a Washburn bad dog 20watt 1-8 amp. It had distortion and I was a rock star in my head at that point. Going from that shotty acoustic to that new Washburn electric was like ohhhhh now I see lol. Than I leaned a lot of Hendrix and dime bag licks. Learned the ssb and lead licks. It took me years of playing to get half way decant because I had no lessons at all. Once the internet hit and everyone was learning from RUclips I was stupid and hated on it. I was like “I Didn’t YoUTUbE I tOuGhT mY sELf bLA blA Bla” I should have jumped in the RUclips train and learned cords and shapes and theory and all that shit instead of being hard headed for another 10 years. So now that I’m 37 and seeing players like you and max ostro who haven’t even been alive as long as I’ve been playing that are waaaat better than me. I’m like Ok. I’ve been playing for 27 years, but I need lessons lol. So 5 months ago I started watching RUclips and meaning the right way. Even tho played daily and played lead for a band and can play really well. I need to learn right

One of the most important takeaways from this is that *everyone* starts as a beginner. You have to sound bad before you can sound good. A lot of people get discouraged when they make these same noises in the beginning and just decide they don't have the "talent" that it takes to play guitar. Talent is learned through lots of practice of the *right* things, and not giving up when you can't do it right away.

I have a weird problem, and it MIGHT be the guitar, more likely me. Key time I notice is the main Enter Sandman riff, which is one of my warm up things. Ring finger on 7th fret A, but at the nd of the riff chunk, when my middle and index fingers need to go to the low E, the string has this weird thing where it will *slip off the fret completely* as I attempt to land on it with my finger tip. It’s in tune….I double check the tuning most of the times I get it out, and certainly if I haven’t played it yet that day. I’m so confused on why that happens

It's always cool to go back and see how much we've improved over the years. It's easy to forget all the little challenges we've faced since the beginning and adjustments we've made to get to where we are.
Really cool video. I'm glad you didn't roast some innocent kid on the internet haha.

I've been playing for about 30 years or so....hate to age myself, but w/e...so I occasionally go back and play things the way I did when I was younger, finding fault in every transition, structure, technique, etc....my question is, do you ever feel like you might accidentally get stuck back in those bad habits by revisiting them? :D sounds crazy, but I do, so I stop immediately. I remember them being a "comfort zone" kind of thing for me, and that's certainly not what I want to ever risk again! edit- I have ever only played for myself, never a dream of rock stardom, so I'm happy with where I am :) Guitar is my God, my therapy, my medication. (it's strange how that old muscle memory still exists after moving on so many years later)

Hey Bernth, I need some advice!
I’ve recently bought myself an electric guitar and wanted to restart playing. I had my first year of lessons ages ago, never put actual effort into learning the instrument then just played metal covers.
Now I want to restart from scratch and properly learn everything from how to hold the pick, the fretting hand, notes scales and such to get to the point where I can play modern metalcore stuff and metal in general.
Which path/lessons would you suggest? I know you have courses but I’m curious on what would be best for me cause I’m this weird situation where I can play some medium difficult metal stuff and still got muscle memory but I want to learn it properly like if I were new to the instrument.

Looks like shredding just isn’t for me. Ever since I started playing many years ago I’ve held the pick anti-clockwise. Everyone I see soloing holds the pick clockwise and there’s no way I’ll ever be able to change that habit now. Disheartening but I’ll just have to get over it 💔

I get nostalgic when I see your BC Rich Warlock. I've never owned one, because I never heard too many positive things about them, but they're still the coolest looking OTT metal guitars ever.

Bernth ich komme auch miami, you have a place to stay with a full studio if you want to come to Miami and jam with a 32 year old guitar player currently making my way up in the ranks. Since becoming a bernth Bavarian I went from being a blues player to being a sweep picker with melodic technique and know how to play arpeggios

You mention posture I am not sure I have found a video on that if you have made one. One of the things I have a problem with is I practice sitting down then I stand up use the guitar strap and my playing goes back downhill big time.

2:35 I have a song that I wrote in 2012, when I still had my high voice, so the growls and screams are super cringe, but also really funny to listen to.
Anyway, I believe we're the most creative when we don't know what to do and just do stuff.
8:50 Oh I learned alot by trying to play songs that were way out of my comfort zone, but as you said, it gets really hard to kick those bad habbits after that time.

My hands position is completely different from yours, but I can shred pretty good, the only thing I haven't mastered perfectly yet is sweep picking. I can do it but not mixing it with tapping, I do economic picking effortlessly. I can play everything I need really, but still practicing more and more to be better, my scored goal is songwriting and vocals, as a guitarist I wish I,d be better, but then I have no fun to sing and play at the same time so...

My hot take (or rather a reminder) on this is that becoming a good or great guitar player even has very little to do with "talent". That's just icing on the cake. Years of hard work in the form dedicated practice -- and having fun -- is where it is at.

Man you are brave to share the early days 😆. The second younger you was pretty decent.
I play like the second you 😂. I only have one arpeggio down, but I need to finally learn some more! I still love power chords though. I started when I was 15 and I'll be turning 47. I have never taken a music class. Its kind of a long time experiment. I play by ear mostly or free jam
I like your vids and personality. Keep em coming!
    Cheers!
