As far as I recall, Anwar al-Awlaki subscribed to the argument that civilians of democratic countries that are at war with Muslims (ie. the USA) can be deemed enemy combatants, despite not being in the military themselves, by virtue of their complicity in voting for their elected representatives who conduct the war. Such an argument is rejected by most scholars. (Apologies if I recall this incorrectly as it is a very complicated issue in the modern context, not to mention the jungle of lies and obscurations that exist around such matters, and it's very possible al-Awlaki had a much more nuanced understanding, and will be rewarded for his efforts. Allahu alim.)
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made dua against Abu Jahal. He (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and said thrice, "O Allah! Punish Quraish." So it was hard for Abu Jahl and his companions when the Prophet invoked Allah against them as they had a conviction that the prayers and invocations were accepted in this city (Mecca). Punish Abu Jahl, `Utba bin Rabi`a, Shaiba bin Rabi`a, Al-Walid bin `Utba, Umaiya bin Khalaf, and `Uqba bin Al Mu'it (and he mentioned the seventh whose name I cannot recall). By Allah in Whose Hands my life is, I saw the dead bodies of those persons who were counted by Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) in the Qalib (one of the wells) of Badr. (Saheeh Bukhari #240)
