1:03 is a reference to Nova Prospekt from HL2. In that level you can hear the Combine soldier in charge starting to panic slightly as the Antlions overrun the prison and say "uh negative. No sector containment, no confirmation on target, uh one vector. We have secondary perimeter overruns, what is the ETA on that Skyshield drop?" I thought it was really cool how they referenced a line from Nova Prospekt when the Combine are getting ready to fight Antlions again, but made the context slightly different e.g. "secondary parameter codes" instead of "secondary perimeter overruns".
Fun fact: Combine soldiers Usually dont say "Uh" when reporting to overwatch/Other units due to their brainwashed states, But in Nova prospekt case, They are so panicked,They have troubles speaking.
Real special forces barely speak in combat, and when they do, it's usually whispers or soft but normal conversation. They use hand signals and lip reading. But it makes perfect sense why the Combine elites wouldn't operate like that. They're more disposable, and Overwatch wants to know exactly what they're up to. Forces like the SEALs, SPETSNAZ, Delta Force, etc, operate with a tremendous emphasis on the individuals operating independently. Overwatch is a hivemind.

I mean if you see combat footage of special forces they're screaming loud as hell, you think whispers or lip reading mid combat works? Combat is already loud as hell. Scream all you want
Lip reading doesn't work with a mask on, so it wouldn't be an option for the combine either. Hand signals are used by combine, however it is still in tandem with actual speech.
As much as I know about hand signals , they are not that often used because of the amount of complexity that can be put into learning the hand signs , as far as I know militaries only use basic hand signals like "halt" or directional signs
I believe their voice modulators change depending on whether they're speaking over radio or speaking to a citizen. In the elevator scene their voices seem pretty clear. They also yell at you sometimes to try to trick you and their voices are pretty easy to hear

in general i do like the hl2 combine sounds better but these ordinal sound effects would have been cool on the overwatch soldiers since they are much more heavily augmented
@@PryzmMusic the hl2 voices are more dull imo
I disagree, I like both equally. The ordinals sound like they were the first prototype-batches of soldiers with completely clean slates and augmented lobes. It's extremely rough around the edges, but they clearly give the grunts better coordination, and so the combine refined and tweaked them. Im not an expert on HL Lore but to me I believe Ordinals are the one step below your HL2 soldiers, as those clearly don't require a commander, and work in perfect sync.
