Ah, those were days :) The early synthesizer days, so pioneering... of course I plan to do more melodic things with it at some point as well. I'm waiting for a case to be made for it, then I can put it in my studio and hook up to some keyboards.
The bell vibes are coming from the Ring Modulator, which multiplies two waveforms together. They often used to be used to make bell sounds, in fact, because they generate overtones that are not harmonically related so they mimic metallic sounds. I suppose the other reason it sounds like a peal is to do with the way the sample and hold circuit is operating and making the note patterns, but that's another story...
