For those that read my comment, I have to say it is so refreshing watching this young family actually “sailing” and explaining locations, wind, weather, sea state, night watches etc. So many Chanel’s now have lost the ability to sail their boats as they rely on the soap drama to finance their lives. There is no wrong in any of that, I’m just loving the commentary of the sailing and enthusiasm they share.
Thankfully we are blessed not to rely solely on youtube for income so we have a bit more flexibility there. Enjoy the videos 😊
As a mechanic of 21 years, i can’t speak specifically about your engine, but it’s typical for diesel and gas engines to circulate excess fuel back to the tank. The fuel pump pushes more than is needed and the regulator lets excess return to the tank. In cold climates during winter, this is a good thing. It also cools your fuel system components some.

When I was in the Marine Corps, I deployed on an aircraft carrier (1993) and we crossed the equator on the way to Perth. It was the most disgusting day of my life. They wouldn't let us walk away from that event with a single piece of clothing on. It was so gross BUT my Shellback certificate is beautiful! And I had a blast in Perth and Freemantle. LOL
Oh I don't even want to know what they put you through but considering thats where the tradition originated they would certainly have years of stories and perfected the art by the time you went through. We haven't even been to Perth yet! Glad you enjoyed yourself 😄

A long voyage across the Pacific with _Sailing with Six,_ here we go! The view doesn't change much, however. Spotting another vessel- spotting _anything_ out there- must be a bit exciting. Sailing across the equator, the Northern to the Southern Hemisphere, a special moment! Looks like you managed to find a swimming pool, lol. Fuel leak = scary, but seems you're on top of it.

Gone with the Wynns had the same issue with their diesel tanks. I think they had new tanks built but can’t recall specifically.

Super sticky building tape used on window edge joints is a must on a boat. That stuff would stick to a slippery banana on ice on an oil slick.

@@sailingwithsix in New Zealand we call it ‘Super Sticky Tape’. If you look it up on the MZ Bunnings site you’ll find it. It’s a foiled tape. There is probably an equivalent. It’s like dry board. Somewhere else it is called Gib board, or Elephant board or chalk board or crap board. All the same but different names.
Continuing to pray for safe travels. When I was in the U.S. Navy (Navigation Dept.) I learned and did celestial navigation. It was fun.

or self-tapping metal roof screw with a rubber grommet. I've had one in a leak in the galvanized range tank (hot water) that is plumbed into our wood cookstove. No leak going on 2 years.

Yes....we should make domestic science a compulsory subject for 10-13 yr olds of both sexes at school. As my gramps told me when I began cooking easy breakfasts with him, aged 9 or 10, "Boy, you may never become another Escoffier, but you'll also never starve". 👨🍳

@@t.a.k.palfrey3882 Sorry if I made it too personal. My point is, if you want kids to enjoy something don't give grades for it. The example from my own childhood is a girl I knew when I was about 9. She was really good at drawing, so her parents sent her to an arts school. She drew a furtree with an apple on it. The teacher gave her an F and wrote "Apples don't grow on furtrees". How many Picasso's and Dali's idiots like that destroyed?

Diesel engines have a fuel heat exchanger that returns fuel to the tank. This prevents the fuel from gelling up (freezing). There should be a valve you can turn off for your fuel return. Not a food idea to leave that tiened off, but really warm diesel tanks are happy tanks, unless they are really extremely hot leave them alone.
Fuel tank leak, epoxy resin or putty should plug up that diesel leak until you get to a safe place to weld your tank.
Good to know. It was hot to touch but I think the heat of being close to equator made everything even hotter.

Back in the day, when sailing distances took longer than today, we found that citrus fruits were about the only ones which would keep long enough, though pomegranates and passion fruits were also better than any other non-citrus fruits. Bananas had to be hung, and away from other fruits, or they'd grow ripe far too quickly. Guacamole, ratatuille, and pickled eggs became a staple on long sails too.

@@sailingwithsix Peeled, hard-boiled eggs soaked in either brine or a boiled water/vinegar/sugar mix, either with or without beetroot juice (for colour), and with a few spices (such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves according to taste), last for 3-4 months. We keep ours in a large 6 litre jar with a firm lid. There are several recipes on RUclips. My Sunshine Coast grom grandsons love them as they're high protein, tasty, and have a bite (as their mum adds wasabi to the water).

Her name is Della Rose. She had blond hair like your Della Rose but yours is a wee bit taller. I always perk up with I hear the name Rose because that was my Mothers name. Anyway, have a good trip.

8:00 (ish) So Starlink allowed cruisers to use it on passage. It was a huge deal a few months ago when suddenly they said you can only use it in ports when stationary. Was a huge upheaval in the sailing community.

Diesel has a high flash point, had a mate who worked in a steel foundry and when they had to remove the slag with a large dumpster the diesel tank was between the cab and the hopper it was a lengthy process and he said you could hear the diesel boiling in the tank after a while 😳

We blocked the hole using soap.
Rub a bar of soap on the hole blocks it then chemi weld or aluminum paste that you got.

There were too many rules and regulations plus the cost - for our family it was not something we wished to pursue when there’s so many other beautiful places to visit with more freedom.

fuel recirculates between fuel tank and engine, the longer the engine runs to warmer to the fuel tank gets
Thanks, I guess we'd never been in where the fuel tank is after running them for this long so never understood how hot they can get.
The other tank being hot may be the climate in general BUT... are you sure they are not connected? There MUST be some way to pump fuel from one side to the other. NO idea how Leopards work. But even one pipe (even with closed valve) would transfer some heat from one tank to another.
Yes we have the ability to trasfer from Starboard to Port but not the other way so yes the hot equatorial conditions and the transfer pipe are definitely creating more heat.

Great video guys. My favorite part of my sailing journey was the Pacific Crossing, enjoy. I may have missed it but did you explain why you skipped Galapagos? We did stop there in 2008 but even then it was becoming very restrictive, was that the reason?

I bet your return line to the tank feels hotter than the tank. Diesel can soak up quite a bit of heat from the injection pump. Some larger diesels will have a radiator in the diesel return line to reduce the temperature. Your radiator is your aluminum tank.
It's always good to remember that all (and I mean all) engine fluids have multiple jobs (cooling, lubricating, cleaning, sealing, and inhibiting corrosion), that might not be obvious, especially when diagnosing issues or considering downstream effects.

Totally normal for the tank to rise in temperature because of the fuel return. I hope you have used a biocide in your tanks and you should be draining your tanks daily. I am a formerly licensed (marine) chief engineer.
Yes we use a biocide 👍 but draining them daily? What is this practice and how practical is it on a sailing vessel?
@@sailingwithsix, two issues exist, the first is that water is present in diesel and jet fuel and the second is that the warm fuel in your tank also warms the airspace above fuel and because warm air can hold more moisture than cold air some of that moisture will condense as the air cools. I believe the water also promotes fungal growth.
As far as the practicality of draining the tanks. There should already be drain valves on each tank and you could drain the fuel into a container. I suppose draining may depend on valve location and sea state.

The tiny slave 😜 is using a Ryobi cordless wet/dry (tool-box size) vacuum cleaner - very handy pice of kit and all plastic so it wont rust out like some of the other wet/dry vacs we've had.

Saw a Makita "hoover" working off the same batteries as their cordless tools. Looks very different though. Wonder if it survives longer than DeWalt boombox. 🙂

19:05 Oh come on, even I know the answer and my knowledge of diesel engines is rudimentary at best. You have two pumps in the engine. One is electric and it supplies fuel from the tank to either the high-pressure pump or to the so-called "common rail". There it packs the fuel to really high pressure - any air in that part of the fuel system will cause some major headaches up to full priming of the entire system, NOT FUN. Some of the fuel goes into the injector(s) and some returns to the tank. Some of that fuel cools the injectors so it gets hot. Then it goes through the return pipe back into the tank.
You are at the equator so it's HOT and the engine is in a closed compartment. It's all running hotter than Paula Abdul. Ergo, hot fuel comes back to the tank and heats it up. Voila.
... And I just realized this has been answered by some other know-it-alls... WHY AREN'T YOU IN BED, PEOPLE!? 21 years mechanic... Sniffle!!!! FINE. 😞 I'll stick to the cultural education.

Ah, that brings back childhood memories. We used to catch pollywogs from local streams in my childhood days. It's an old slang term for a tadpole. Poll or polly was another word for a head. Hence, when we take a poll we count heads. Wog is simply a variation of wig or wiggle. Those of us who sail also refer to young sailors as pollywogs to indicate that they have yet to mature by having crossed the Equator and been accepted by King Neptune as a real mariner. 😅
