    NOTE: If you have a hard time hearing over the music, try unplugging your headphones and watch without them. I am aware the music is too loud, and I have 100% fixed this in my newer videos, but this was an early video and I was still learning to edit. I apologize for the problem though, and you can be sure this won't happen in any of my newer videos! Thanks for watching!

    It is not pronounced K-Dex. It is pronounced Caw-Dex. Adenium do not come from a tropical area as you mentioned. They come from a desert area; hence, the name Desert Rose.

      Yes the desert rose can survive in the desert. Now if I'm not mistaken I believe they are from around the northern part of Africa kind of around the Sahara area. They're very good at surviving on no water and megar rations. They store water in their huge trunks and will even drop their leaves to keep the center of the plant and roots intact and healthy.

    You mention it needing direct sunlight for several hours in the day, I live in Arizona where it gets 110+ and I think the direct light is actually burning the flowers on mine, will it be ok or should I make some shade for it, kind of like they do at nurseries with the top over filtered shade

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  5 лет назад +5

      Yes they come from the hot, arrid, regions in Africa, the Middle East and Madagascar. When we bring these plants into our homes the way to keep them thriving is by being able to recreate thier natural environment to the best of our ability. Typically in the spring and summer it is best to sit them outside as opposed to just on a window sill. Now I've found that it's best to let them get about 6 hours of direct sunlight in the morning and keeping them out of direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day. You really want to introduce them back into the sunlight slowly especially if you've gotten them from someone or a store that has kept them inside all day. If you notice that they are burning, position them to where they won't get direct sunlight in the hottest part of an Arizona afternoon.

      @@cheers2023 you can tell by the leaf shape and also the growth habit of the desert rose. Obesum have extremely thin shiny leaves; Scotranum have fatter shiny leaves, arabicum have fat non-shiny leaves with fuzz on it (also arabicum cant really grow a trunk above the caudex, the branches grow out of the caudex). Scotranums are getting more and more common in the USA. I see them all the time mislabeled as Obesum. I prefer the Thai desert roses (ie: scotranum) as well (for various reasons).

      use only succulent soil for ALL indoor plants because it has superior drainage and structure to designer potting soils.
      Also highly recommend adding earthworms, springtails, and soil mites (not spider mites lol) to your planters as well for constant year round automatic fertilization. I call this trio of bugs and worms "living soil" and is my number 1 secret to very healthy and fast growing plants.
      Earthworms, springtails, and soil mites wont leave the indoor planter because they cannot survive outside of the soil inside the planter. So no need to worry about that.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  3 года назад

      If you are gonna prune him back go ahead and do it now. Growers typically cut them back in mid to late fall to help protect newer growth from being damaged in winter. I know yours will be inside but that's when I prune mine back. I also only water just enough to keep the plant alive. I'll just water well and don't water again for about another four weeks. Remember they are drought tolerant and they'll slow down in the winter, just don't forget either.

    Just found your video on the desert rose....I bought mine from qvc about 3 yrs ago and at that time the plant was suppose to be like 2yrs old when shipped to me....And it hasn’t bloomed yet.... the leaves turn yellow and fall off. It’s in an east facing window in the winter and summer it’s in 5-7hrs direct sun....
    Any ideas on how to get a flower to bloom?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  3 года назад

      Typically, a desert rose that isn't flowering is often because it is not getting enough sunlight. Once the threat of frost has passed in your area your plant should be outside. Established plants need at least five or six hours of sunlight a day, possibly more even. Grown from seed desert roses can take 12 -24 months to flower so yours should be flowing by now. If he's been up inside all winter I'd start him out slowly but eventually, six hours or more of sunlight should be occurring every day. Do you keep him outdoors? Even in a Florida room, there can be obstructions with the light and you still make have to rotate. Yellowing leaves that fall off can occur from overwatering, over fertilizing, or even low light. I let the soil dry out completely before I water again. On my smaller ones, I do water them about a week to 12 days sooner than my larger ones.

    What do you use for your soil mix? I have had really good luck now with cocopeat, course sand, compost, acadama, and pumice. Prior to this blend, the roots really did nothing , just rotted. I live in Montana, so dealing with tropical succulents is challenging. The dessert rose and lithops especially. Have done my share of rotting them with too much love! But, always better to err on the side of too little water, rather than too much. I love the cocopeat blend, though. ...so well draining it’s hard to overwater, and soil is soft and fluffy for great root development.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 года назад +1

      So I'm further south then you are and Kentucky gets way more than it's fair share of rain. Unfortunately the gardening stores and big box stores around here don't understand that. All they really sell is miracle grow cacti and succulent soil which I guess is a little bit close to help with the plants. Typically I'll add in some horticultural grade sand to further help with the drainage. Both of my desert roses and my hen and chicks garden have loved it. I've posted some pics of them on my insta if you wanna check em out. ytgreenalchemist on there.

    What if your leaves are turning completely black? There is no root rot. Is it dehydrated, sun burnt, diseased?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 года назад

      Are they turning yellow first then black? Is it just the leaves, stem tips or even stems/trunk? How often are you watering? Does it get plenty of airflow around the plant? If you can take some pics and send them to me so I can get a better understanding of what's going on. Try to include the immediate surroundings of the plant too.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist

      We're probably in the same USDA Climate zone! I live in Northern Kentucky! Depending on how the plant looks when it arrives you may need to repot it. Usually most plant selling companies are trying to save the most money they can when they can. For this reason a lot of them just fill their pots with subpar soil, typically only putting enough nutrients in to get the plant through just a couple of weeks. It really shouldn't hurt the plant to repot it at this time, but like I said that is your call. Although if you do decide to repot the plant I would wait about a week or at least 5 days. The plant will without a doubt already be stressed out from shipping and repotting will only stress it out more.

    Hi~ my desert rose plant looks like it’s sick. The leaves turned yellow and falling off. Even the baby leaves sprouting turned yellow and falling off. Some of the green ones are curling up with tiny brown sticky stuff on it. It had spider mites or something on few places, so I sprayed some baking soda water on it. How can I save this plant?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  5 лет назад +2

      I have two of these bad boys now. The bigger one is a pretty pinkish red one and the smaller is supposed to be a dark color. I got it off eBay and it was marked as black. It hasn't flowered in the year and a half that I've had it but I'm thinking that it's gonna be more on the purple side. Either way I can't wait until I see what color it's going to be. Anyway I have had that problem with both of them. The taller one I've had about 4 years and I find that the reason their leaves turn yellow and fall off is to help the plant conserve water. It's been about 95 here in Northern Kentucky for the past week so I make sure I give both of them some water every night. Just enough to let water run out the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. I haven't seen either one drop a leaf in over a month. Spider mites shouldn't be too hard to handle on this plant. Make sure you spray it down every night when you go to water him with the water hose. Spray on top as well as underneather every leaf and stem. Wait until the next day or two and then look him over with a really good light. If you see any mites or even filaments like with a web and if you do, take some isopropyl alcohol and soak it on a washcloth then wipe down every leaf and stem and do all sides and that should take care of any stragglers. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  5 лет назад

      Yes some fertilizer is ok for it but don't use a ton. Don't forget these guys are at home in the hot dry arid desert. Typically they can get by on next to nothing. Some won't hurt, but I'd dillute it by half and not become dependent on it.
