    After 25 years of traditional bonsai I have taken on both COCONUT and ADENIUM ... both as bonsai ... channels like yours on RUclips are great for learning techniques. Thank you for taking the time to post your projects. BTW, those roots you removed can also be pulled away from the main caudex and they will expand to make the caudex even bigger. The cool thing about Desert Rose is how many different things you can do with them. I envy the one your wife found for you!!!

      I had a couple from HD and got hooked a couple years back and found an etsy shop that sold seeds. Now I'm drowning in dozens of 1 year old baby ademiums and have never been happier! Its really helped me come to terms with experimenting with pruning and root work now that I have "extras" cause I was always terrified mess anything up

    Good to see so many people are growing these fantastic plants!
    I bought my first one in 1990, It was at a cactus green house in Dundas Ontario Canada,
    It was also a lot of growth on top and all the tater was in the pot.
    When I transplanted it, it was beautiful huge caudex that constantly flowered.
    Now I live in Victoria British Columbia and garden centers are getting them in every color imaginable!
    I just picked up a white flowering one grown from seed and not from a graft,
    It is good to be back at it!

      @@h.mutawa866 That was lost years ago, but I do have three small ones that bloomed. A beautiful blood red one and now my white one is in bloom. My newest one will be a cream and red , kind of like a swirl ice cream. Too bad I can't post pictures here.

    I just managed to find an absolute massive caudex at my local greenhouse. Normally they just have some small ones, but I spotted this monster in dormancy, very unassuming, in the wrong section. A very triangular shape from the top-down with three main tap roots. About 10" wide at the thickest part. Wider than it is tall. I pruned it, repotted it, and am gonna keep it warm throughout dormancy. Hopefully, when it begins to awake in the spring I'll have it outside to bloom (if Midwest weather permits).

    @ShyDog827 2 месяца назад +1

    You should experiment with just leaving the thicker exposed roots to see how they grow out around the codex .

    I also look at the caudex because of the look of it. I just started to plant seeds. I hope they sprout. Started to look at deep rose videos and discovered yours.

    Harry Potter reference: Mandrakes. They scream when lifted. I raise adeniums too and if I get a good caudex underground, I call it my little mandrake. 😂

    Hello, thanks for sharing lots of great information. I am a Desert Rose fan too. I read that you are not sure about using cinnamon, but have you ever heard about using Titebond glue III to seal the plant after pruning?

    Drywall Tape works really well to cover the holes up.

    • @texasgardenguy
      @texasgardenguy  4 месяца назад

      You can. I use cinnamon usually. But you can also just not water it and keep it dry for a week until it heals up

    It’s not necessary to break a pot. Use garden sprayer and screw driver to wash out all the soil and rocks. Keep rinsing until all the soil is gone the plant will come out and now trim off all the spaghetti roots. Dust with cinnamon and allow to sit in shade for a couple days before replanting.

    I have a large desert rose. 4’wide x 3’ tall above soil. It is in a large pot. 24” at top. I had branches that we’re getting mushy and there is a small section about 20% of the roots that got mushy. I pulled it out of the pot and cut out the mushy sections and put it in my garage to dry out. we live in Southwest Florida with a lot of rain this time of year throughout the summer. We put cinnamon on all the bad areas that were cut out. Please help if you can.. I watched your video where you use the bonsai mix. Is there something I can fill the bottom of the pot to save money on the mix since the desert Rose is not that deep.

    Hi my name is Brenda I recently purchased a desert rose however my leaves are dying on my Desert Rose here in Michigan I just use potting mix to plant my Desert Rose. is it shedding for winter or should I change the soil.? Also the bottom of the plant is getting a little soft.

    • @texasgardenguy
      @texasgardenguy  2 месяца назад +1

      You can keep it in regular potting soil if you can control the amount of water it’s getting. But up in Michigan it may be going dormant. I would bring it in and stop watering altogether until spring.

      I don’t like to spray the roots. Any black soil that’s still on the plant will get washed off over time.
