Senators Wary of Sending National Guard to Quell Campus Protests

- US senators dismissed House Speaker Mike Johnson’s suggestion to send the National Guard to college campuses to quell growing protests against the war in Gaza and US support for Israel.
“I don’t know if you need to call in the National Guard, maybe you just call in the police,” said Senator JD Vance, an Ohio Republican and one of several lawmakers from both parties expressing reservations. Vance spoke on Fox News Sunday.
Sending the National Guard to campuses would evoke painful memories of the violent era of campus protest against the Vietnam War, specifically at Kent State University, Senator Tim Kaine, a Virginia Democrat, said on NBC’s Meet the Press.
In 1970, the National Guard shot into a group of protesters at Ohio’s Kent State, killing four students.
“I think that would be a very, very bad idea,” Kaine said of deploying the National Guard. There are ways to manage the protests using campus security, Kaine said, and also by “offering students more opportunities to have dialogue that is civil and constructive where people hear one another.”

If you've ever camped out; and its doubtful these folks have, it can get old really quickly when you start missing your creature comforts. Eventually the stess and boredom will intersect and many of them will turn to doing drugs and that's when th Police can go in and arrest them. Problem solved.

IMO, in US, the protests are usually peaceful and maybe a bit noisy with lots of slogans shoutings ..... and yet they have to encounter and suffer such unwarranted and excessive police brutality.
Whereas, in Hong Kong, for 2 years (from Yr 2019 to 2021), there were violent and riotous protests, every day, 24/7, for a period of 2 years (and mind you, those riotous protestors received 100% support & encouragement from the human rights activists and the US Congress too) .... and yet, the Hong Kong security and police force were able to handle those riotous protestors (with care and understanding) in an authoritative manner but no bullying and manhandling.
The HK security and police force had shown to the world at large what is the true meaning of police professionalism .... 👍👍!!

Those that are calling for the National Guard do not remember, have not learned or choose to repeat what happened at Kent state. These students have the right to protest this way.
