    There's multiple injuries and deaths at Starved Rock State Park every year for people going off the trails and falling off of canyons and cliffs. Conservation officers normally will ticket you for being in a restricted area if you're off the designated trails. Starved Rock State Park is nice and there's miles and miles of trails to hike but you just need to stay on the designated trails.

  • @awrinkleincrime
    @awrinkleincrime 2 года назад +21

    Kinda disappointed Conservation didn't ticket you both but I'm glad you're both still alive. It's okay that you don't like Starved Rock because people that can't follow simple safety rules don't belong here. The rock isn't stable except for marked trails. The property surrounding Starved Rock is used for frac sand mining which slowly changes structural integrity in some locations. If you lived in the area, you would see how many bodies have to be scraped from the Rock. I'm sure you can imagine it takes a while to get rescue out to someone especially if nobody witnesses the fall. The people that fall normally look and act just like you. Btw you went to the most crowded part of Starved Rock that is where tourists go. A tiny bit of research and you would have found a more secluded area with less people and more waterfalls. Stick to the bean, kids. 😉

    • @fringetravel
      @fringetravel  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the kind words. Where we walked was very stable and we never actually climbed any sandstone rocks. Our disappointment mainly was cause a guy at REI told us there was climbing there, and finding out there wasn't was pretty unsatisfying. As a result, we jokingly directed frustration at law enforcement. But none of that is overtly clear in the video so I understand the backlash

      Contrary to what your pea-sized mind might imagine, there are actually fewer people working in recent times because they would rather take unemployment and stimulus checks than work, as evident by the 15 million job vacancies in the US today. Especially during the time this was filmed, many people were recently placed on furlough or fired due to the pandemic, so really it's really not unlikely that more people had the free time to attend parks due to inability to work/find jobs or lack of wanting to.

    You guys clearly don't understand the geography when you say you can't climb or swim. You don't want to swim in that nasty water. My brother got a terrible rash after doing that in Wild cat canyon. And you don't want to climb. It crumbles. And we are trying to preserve that place. It was native land.
    I've walked those trails at least 50 times in my life. And yes I've gone off the paths. And yes I've slipped on sand and broke an ankle.
    Go to Matthiessen state park. They really don't care if you climb all over. And it's pretty fun and the ground is much more sturdy.

    The incredible amount of marketing that has been done to drive people into the parks in LaSalle County has made the business owners in Utica and Ottawa happy, but the actual nature in the parks seems to be suffering heavily in the past few years, in the form of over the top amounts of garbage and vandalism issues. Just being within a reasonable driving distance from metropolitan Chicago doesn't automatically make a relatively tiny conservation area a great place to funnel thousands of people every weekend in the summer. I was an ER nurse in Ottawa for 10 years, and the stories of people falling to their deaths every weekend are no myth. It's a nice place for a day hike, and much less crowded in the winter. You might have a better experience if you try to check out the frozen waterfalls and the canyons during the winter.

Sadly it’s been continually more and more restrictive for off trail hiking because so many folks have gone to unsafe means to get a selfie and have died… so now it is what it is. thanks for the very genuine comment. I haven't been back to starved rock since this video, but given this was only a couple months into the pandemic our views on the number of people there are a lot more critical than they should be. But to be safe, I would assume that any time you go to starved rock in the summer it's going to be pretty packed, but that doesn't mean it's not worth it because it's still a decent park in terms of its geography. That being said, a lot of people have commented to go in the winter when fewer people are there so maybe that's the way to do it. Still, there are some aspects of the park such as the excessive use of paved paths and boardwalks or the fact that there is some type of restaurant in the park that make me not really like this place. In short, it's very overdeveloped and over-visited, but I still think it's a neat place for geography given its proximity to Chicago

    It is a shame how much trash is around but I love the history of starved rock so much beauty and Tragedies in the same place! The name it’s self one native tribe starved or caused the members of another tribe to jump to their death and then the lovers leap was a true Romeo and Juliet story and then there is the 1960 murders whose accused murder was released from jail last year staying in Chicago!! I like how daring you guys are

    You 2 guys must be lightweights. I've been going to those parks since the early 70s. That whole area is made of sandstone, so it holds moisture more, making it more slippery & therefore more dangerous. All those ppl are the reason why the wooden walkways _ decks, etc. we're built. So much erosion cause stone is so soft. If you ever needed help you'd be glad for all those ppl. As someone else stated, try it in the fall with autums colorful blanket on the forest. Good luck. 🙏👍

    Watching this back for the first time in a while and reflecting on it, starved rock is not a complete shizhole. We went on a really busy day during early covid times and seeing that many people was not only annoying but kind of concerning at the time. Starved rock is a really cool site for Illinois and being as close to Chicago as it is. I sort of went in comparing it to much better parks in better states, ultimately setting the bar too high. Ive heard from a bunch of people (in person and in comments) though that there are more remote spots away from the crowds, so we will be sure to return in the near future. With that said don't let this video stop you from going here, just learn from our mistakes and avoid the main paths.

    Actually though correct due to politics things suck here in many areas. But though i disagree Starved Rock sucks. Matthieson State Park though the stairs is unbearable for me and my family though good for others, that park has better waterfall. And down in the canyon of it. Much more beautiful and there is other sections to starved Rock we did see a great waterfall in Starved Rock in one of the sections got to walk some and that but it was big waterfall, and great and many were swimming in the pool below.
    There is also the beautiful Alton area, Dixson Springs State park we gonna see in July. It looks beautiful there is many state parks. Just they use Starved Rock as the main one . Many people just have to look outside the box. Though Starve Rock is awesome i found though the steps are terrible wear you out for most like me and many when i was there at Matthieson State Park down the road from Starved Rock. It was a better beautiful park than Starved Rock , they call it the baby brother to Starved though to me much more beautiful.
    But there is many beautiful spots Garden of the Gods, Cave in Rock, Many areas of Shawnee State park, Dixon Springs State park. Some back beautiful scenic ones in around the Ozark,IL area i havent seen but beautiful. Cypress tree area we gonna see. there many beautiful scenery alover the s state of Illinois just their underrated or not known as much. Illinois really beautiful when know where things are by search. But compared to other states it maybe a nothing burger. But dont mean their not great just many are ignored or underrated. Like those i mention.
    Same as beautiful small communities with cool things to see. Alton,IL, Chester,IL. Nauvoo,IL Metropolis,IL which going in July. Galena,IL Greenup,IL alot of history alot of interesting places. But as in beauty, from what i saw in Wisconsin and how it ran for now. That is better than IL. But dont mean IL isnt beautiful.

Still is far from the worse park by far. Next time go to the circle. If you don't know where and more importantly the circle and what it's for then you don't know the Rock. Besides it's more like 3 parks all big a few miles from each other.
