Thank you so much for putting this up. I loved this game as a kid, even though I could barely get anyone to play it.
Looking over it again now I want to re-write a bunch of it to streamline and clean it up, but have no time.

Really excited to find your videos! I’ve been playing tabletop games since 1980. In the late eighties and the 90’s, I worked in a hobby store that sold lots of Avalon Hill games. I’ve always loved them. I never bought this one, but pored over the box in the store many times. I couldn’t afford to buy a game nobody wanted to play with me at the time. Same went for Magic Realm.
In the years since I’ve always regretted not buying either game, and have thought about them often. Nowadays, Magic Realm is out of my price range, sadly, but I see this game is available for a more reasonable price. Thanks to your videos I’m looking into getting one!
Thanks for these great videos, I am sure I will rewatch them many times during my own adventure into this game!

I'm in a similar boat. There are many RPGs i have played, or wanted to play, in the past that I wish I had picked up copies for myself. Fortunately, some are available in PDF form, and I can print out a copy for myself now.

Loved this game. We had started it after playing the D&D B/X system, and this was miles better. Granted most of my math skills came from this book vs school... While rolling up a character, you have a chart of various background quirks, and if you're lucky enough, like I was, you can inherit magic items. I happen to start off a character with magical platemail... My older brother was the GM, and it agitated him so much that he could never do any damage to me that he ended up having a dragon hit me and melt me... I know he did it out of spite... Anyhow, it was a glorious game. I've thought MANY times of converting Tower of the Dead and bringing some friends through it with GURPS (our chosen system).

This system can make some strong magic items so I can understand your brother's frustration. As these characters progress, I plan to have the wizard create some basic magic items.

That's great to hear! I am curious how it is going for your group, how long you have been playing, and what sort of house rules you may be using.

With the actual group we have been playing since 5 years ago, although i have been playing since 1985. I do not use many house rules, for example, in the character creatiom i allow them to make to dice throws for each characteristic, and choose the higher. Also i left them select what they want to be (wizard for example) without throwing to see if the are accepted in the academy. Also i allow them, with expertise points to use them to learn spells using the same rules as learning weapons etc.
When using magic, during play we use energy level to lunch spells, as if it is native magic user. Best regards. @@norwolf01

Got P&P back in the mid 80's. We played it now and then, kind of round robin with other games (DnD, Warhammer Fantasy, RuneQuest, Roll Master, among others). In college, in 1989, started a group playing P&P again. It became my go-to game, and I really haven't played anything else since. Although i have added and changed some rules along the way.... I love this game! Love the creatures, the magic system, and the treasure system. It's just an all-around fun experience.

Nice, it is an awesome game. I'm in a similar boat and played a lot of different games over the years. Recently I got invited into a group that wanted to run P&P so I am very happy to be playing it again.

Completely candid, I think as a kid when I played this game I didnt put too much thought into ability score adjustments based on gender. I probably chuckled when I saw the Intelligence comparisons, but I didnt play the game with girls, so this never was an issue at the table. All that said, if you do a straight comparison, a human woman comes out AHEAD of a human male for ability scores, and this was probably how it got pushed through any argument at that time.

Rightly or wrongly, it was 40 year ago. It does add another small layer of flavour to the races and genders. In the long run it is likely only a very minimal advantage or disadvantage.

Im making a dwarf fighter type character side-by-side with you. When I'm done, Im gonna pit this guy against my guy in a fight to the death. So far, your character is superior than my guy by way of re-rolling Native Ability scores. That's been the biggest difference thus far.

How goes, or how went, the battle?

Generally, I have the players go with what they roll unless the characteristics make both a terrible warrior and a terrible magic user. In that case I will make a judgement call and have them reroll a 1 or 2 characteristics in the hopes they get end up with something reasonable, reroll the entire character, or some even choose to play the character regardless of their rolls.
For this video, I fudged some rolls to ensure a decent fighter came out in the end.
