ACKS Lairs & Encounters - Great reference for any D&D like or any FRPG system
Просмотров 5034 месяца назад
Lairs & Encounters from the Adventurer Conqueror King System (ACKS) is a great reference, not just for ACKS but any OD&D, AD&D, D&D based RPGS. IMHO, it can even be adapted to any Fantasy RPG with a bit of effort. It has 165 ready-to-play monstrous lairs, 36 lair maps, 30 new monsters, new subsystems for sandbox play, additional mechanics for monsters, a complete system for taming and training ...

Interesting to hear some of your thoughts on solo play styles and future possibilities for play on the channel. I tend to personally favor a mental "role switching" method for my solo games effectively playing both sides in a manner similar to your description. I have tried a few of the more tailored approaches, but have found it more enjoyable for me to just play both sides. Watching your P&P vids has been a learning experience for me that I am enjoying. My P&P game box has sat on a shelf for some time with only infrequent booklet readings on my part. My last attempt at play (as I recall) was in the '80s. Your videos show there is a good game here and also nicely demonstrates many of the system mechanics for a close observer to learn from. Time is the very real limiting factor for too much in life. Cheers!
It sounds like you need to pull the box off the shelf and have another look, make up a character, and see where it goes.
Thanks for sharing, I've been curious about what books to add to my own collection
Is their an online Character Generator for P&P?
Not that I am aware of. I doubt is was popular enough in the past for someone to have set one up.
It's nice that you put these play vids up for viewing. P&P is an interesting game (as you demonstrate) and there is a beauty to actually going through the process of play that may not be appreciated if one has simply read the rules. Cheers!
Two nice encounters. The story is progressing well.
Man, those Orchi were really phoning it in... Raf must have tripped and fell into their fist on that one deadly hit. 😂 otherwise, the Orchi were swinging at air.
Interesting, need to watch it from beginning
Like the video. Love the larger maps of the lairs in the back of the book! The maps, alone, make this something I want to add to my Wish List. Cheers!
Enjoy your videos on such an obscure game system! I've had a copy sitting on my shelf since it came out in the 80's.
There are some great games on this shelf. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a "favorite systems" shelf. Cheers!
So many favorite shelves... but yes, definitely one of them!
The manner in which you use the detailed P&P random tables blending die rolls together with the setting world to form a developing narrative is impressive. Cheers!
Awesome! Love this game, even though I've never played it! Very crunchy!
Hey for the native, what is your's method ? 2D10 and you relance with 5-8 ?
Generally, I have the players go with what they roll unless the characteristics make both a terrible warrior and a terrible magic user. In that case I will make a judgement call and have them reroll a 1 or 2 characteristics in the hopes they get end up with something reasonable, reroll the entire character, or some even choose to play the character regardless of their rolls. For this video, I fudged some rolls to ensure a decent fighter came out in the end.
Got P&P back in the mid 80's. We played it now and then, kind of round robin with other games (DnD, Warhammer Fantasy, RuneQuest, Roll Master, among others). In college, in 1989, started a group playing P&P again. It became my go-to game, and I really haven't played anything else since. Although i have added and changed some rules along the way.... I love this game! Love the creatures, the magic system, and the treasure system. It's just an all-around fun experience.
Nice, it is an awesome game. I'm in a similar boat and played a lot of different games over the years. Recently I got invited into a group that wanted to run P&P so I am very happy to be playing it again.
The fight was brutal.
Wish i could combine this Sort of exploración with combate like The Fantasy Trip. Good video pal!
Thank you!
In the videos to follow, can you be heard better?
I had various challenges with audio in some of the initial videos. I believe I worked out the issues and in particular, the last several videos have been pretty clear.
@@norwolf01 oh goody!
Happy Trails indeed. I look forward to the next installment of this P&P play series. Cheers!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
I wanted to like ACKS , but with no skill checks or dificulty checks makes it hard for me
ACKS calls skills proficiencies which do have checks. To each their own though.
Excellent book, there is a lot of good info in there.
I'd love to have you on our channel to discuss Powers & Perils. It would be great to talk to somebody well-versed in this unique and interesting game. We are Roleplay Cafe+
That could be a possibility, do you want to chat some time?
This is an awesome thing you are doing with this game and these sessions. I own Powers & Perils, it befuddles me with its crunchiness but has also fascinated me by its level of depth. I appreciate what you are doing with P&P. I have made a video on our YT channel pointing to your YT channel and project. Thanks. We are Roleplay Cafe+ on YT if you are curious.
Wow, thanks, I really appreciate that. I'm very familiar with the Roleplay Cafe + channel and watch a lot of your content including your P&P video from late 2022. Even Trevor Devall was befuddled on the review he did and it seems he had been into crunchy rules games in the past.
@@norwolf01 Yes, my 2022 observations could have been more thoughtful. Either way, these are fantastic videos of a classic AH TTRPG.
The leaf through these books was a bit hectic in the beginning. Understandable by the amount of books, but in that case i´d prefer some chosen highlights instead of this fast back and forth, without seeing much. But it got calmer in the second half of the video. Interesting old-school-stuff, did´nt heard about it before (Traveller did it for me, always!).
I agree, I wanted to get through all the books without the video getting too long. I'm planning to go back and do a deeper dive into the core books and maybe a few others along with a character creation walkthrough.
The algorithm sent me here.
Continuing to enjoy your videos! Love your P&P sessions !
I continue to enjoy this series and appreciate your channel. P&P has some very nice mechanical aspects that intrinsically add to the narrative of the action. The change in armor damage makes sense. The creature in this session has some unique features that make the encounter more intetesting. Cheers!
Thank you for crafting this nice overview of one of the forgotten game systems out there. FGU really had a lot of very cool stuff as I am currently working my way through their product portfolio.
I am still playing with my friends this RPG. Is an excellent game.
That's great to hear! I am curious how it is going for your group, how long you have been playing, and what sort of house rules you may be using.
With the actual group we have been playing since 5 years ago, although i have been playing since 1985. I do not use many house rules, for example, in the character creatiom i allow them to make to dice throws for each characteristic, and choose the higher. Also i left them select what they want to be (wizard for example) without throwing to see if the are accepted in the academy. Also i allow them, with expertise points to use them to learn spells using the same rules as learning weapons etc. When using magic, during play we use energy level to lunch spells, as if it is native magic user. Best regards. @@norwolf01
Stumbled into this. I'm awestruck. I love every single minute of it This is treasure and no one can tell me otherwise subbed
Thank you. I plan to do more with Space Opera soon as well as continuing with my Powers & Perils run.
Your collection has many gems! Always fun to see these on the shelf videos.
OMG I played this as a kid! (Yes, I'm really old) 😮 Worth noting: The space combat system is coincidentally *identical* to what is seen in David Gerrold's "Star Wolf" sci-fi novels.
Lol, hopefully fond memories.
I prefered star frontiers or Gamma World. But we played a ton of stuff. Boot Hill, Gangbusters, Villians and Vigilantes, Commando, top secret, Star Trek, James Bond 007, Conan the role playing game, DC heroes, Marvel Super Heroes, and of course D&D/AD&D.
Nice, sounds like a lot of the same stuff I played back in the day.
I remember playing this, waaay back in the day. I liked it, but the GM was too passive, and players just stopping being interested.
I had Aftermath! as a teen. It used the same engine, and while I loved the setting, the engine itself I thought was unplayable.
I had this! I played this! WoW!
I lost the fight against Traveller! I'm still salty. But at least I still have my Star Sector Atlas's, Source books and Adventures. Damn, I loved Casino Galactica and NCG 8436! But I'm easily pleased.
Casino Galactica is a favorite of mine as well and one I used a lot in the past.
Wow, I never heard of this one.
When iu saw the title of the video, I initially thought of the old Alternity system.
Thank you for covering this! I hope you explore more in the series! The creator of this TTRPG was also the creator of the original FGU "Chivalry & Sorcery" titled "Chevalier".
Yes, that's true. I was doing some reading the other day about the creators; Edward E. Simbalist, A. Mark Ratner, and Phil McGregor along with Scott Bizar from FGU. Edward E. Simbalist and Wilf K. Backhaus designed Chevalier.
Nice overview of a system that I have seen around, but never knew much about. The fact that it is still in print speaks well for its appeal and following. I am wondering, will there be a play series for SO? Cheers!
I do plan to do a few more videos on SO with the next one being character creation.
Thanks for the info, I had wondered in a separate comment if it was still in print.
Very nice "one shot"! Perhaps a bit of orc tribal animosity? Fun session and enjoy the graphical display. Cheers!
Hello, thx a lot. I don't know how the cost of purchasing spells is calculated. It is BMC ?
Yes, the cost to learn/purchase spells is based on the BMC. In the version 2 rules it is Table 10.5, pg. 103 or Book 2, Section 7.3, pg. 14 in the original rules. When I'm creating a new character I assume they are being instructed so the cost to learn is halved. If you are referring to paying another mage for a spell that your character wants to learn in game, that is left to the referee's discretion.
Boot Hill was such a great game!
Yes, I had a lot of fun with Boot Hill and Gang Busters in the past
The Castle of Blackwood moors looks beautiful.
I continue to enjoy following the series. The unfolding storyline is interesting and the game play is definitely not "same old D20". I have mentioned before that each roll of the dice in P&P seems to bring images of the action to my mind. Great vid series!
Thank you, I appreciate it! It's a niche rpg and I'm just starting to scrape the surface of how the system works and character abilities evolve.
When we playing? 😝
Lol, we'll have to figure that out...
I havent seen too many doing presentations on this. I like those old games also. I bought a DragonHunt game that was in pretty nice condition. The boards need renovated as they are warped. It just seemed like a big epic game story. I want to make bigger standees or 3d figures for each of the main characters. I want to do something with the chits ,maybe recreate them into larger size. I bought a "Hero" album game as it was pretty cheap but in really nice condition. Idk why i got it exactly, lol. I just liked it, i guess i saw potential ideas of making a version of it with bigger playing boards and upsizing everything and adding some different features. Anyway, i want to get time to build a bunch of different vintage games, like Wreck of the Pandora .
Too bad an insert was not included. Too many cards to just throw in the box. Still, it’s exciting to receive an awaited game in the mail. Enjoy your game and hopefully you’ll let us know what you think about it after a few plays!
Thanks. I'm hoping there is handy solution out there for keeping all the cards organized. I'm looking forward to some playing this weekend.
Love these shorts! Your collection is incredible!
Quite the library.
