"Birds' lament", from Madrigals and Chronicles, published 1924
Oh, says the linnet, if I sing,
My love forsook me in the spring
and nevermore will I be seen
without my satin gown of green.
Oh, says the pretty feathered jay,
Now my love is gone away
And for the memory of my dear
A feather of each sort I'll wear.
Oh, says the rook and eke the crow,
The reason why in black we go
Because our love has us forsook,
So pity us poor crow and rook!
Oh, says the pretty speckled thrush
That changes its note from bush to bush,
My love has left me here alone,
I fear she never will return.

A lovely lament for Maestro Bennett who left us on Christmas Eve, to return in the music he gave to us . . . bless his life, as his enchanting melody for this sweet poem does.

I was in a choir in the late 70s / early 80s where we sang this. One of the few songs I remember. 🎼 👏🏾

A wonderful rendition of this piece. Nice playing as well. The slower tempo makes it even more special. Thank you.

I remember Anne-Marie Owens singing this song when we were at music college in the 1970s. She went on to do great things with ENO and other opera companies. I didn't. But it's still a great song. Nice orchestral version also recorded by Gavin Surtherland

Other than the technicality raised by Antonio, this is very good, well done. There are a few versions on RUclips and I'd say yours is definitely one of the best.

Thanks for the comment, Sean! These pieces are definitely gems and I'd love to record the rest should the opportunity present itself. Perhaps you might give it a go yourself? It would be great to hear you sing. Meanwhile, you might find a recording of the set on Naxos by the New London Children's Choir titled, Pigs Could Fly.

Hey Madeleine, thanks for the comment. I'm embarrassed that you think I might be able to give tips. I have a few issues to iron out myself. For me, I found breath control and the balance between consonants and vowels a challenge. I wonder if that would be the same for you. Nevertheless, I am sure you'll do well in your exam! Good luck and have fun!

Listening to this has made my day. You have the most beautiful voice! I'm doing this as one of my singing exam pieces, do you have any performance tips for it? You sing it so beautifully and which such feeling and emotion, thank you so so so much for posting.

I heard an orchestral version of this song that sounded great. Does anyone know where to find it?

Your voice is so good, this is my favourite version, its a chaim that you don´t sing the right notes on "oh says THE linnet"(it´s an B insted of an A). Do you have a version with the right notes?
