I can think of no other woman who deserves the icon status more than Frida Kahlo.

From a medical standpoint, I’d say by that point the gangrene surgery was probably one of the least worrisome. Her spine was so much of a mess by then I’d be surprised if she even had any sensation left in them. You definitely are way off saying it’s the worst of a genuinely horrible collection.

In 2004 I went to old Mexico for about 4 months. While there I visited her home that I believe she grew up in. I wasn't impressed with her art, her life and lifestyle. JMO.
