  • Welcome to another episode of the Old Man and the Three with JJ Redick and special guest, Tim Legler. In this episode we talk about NBA trends we've noticed in the 2024 NBA Playoffs, primarily around the impact of role players. Guys like P.J. Washington, Derrick White, Naz Reid and T. J. McConnell are all making a huge impact this postseason. Then we move on to specific series starting with Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers vs. Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics. Finally we go out West to talk Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns, Rudy Gobert and the Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving and The Dallas Mavericks.

One huge element that is lost in all the criticism of the Celtics, compared to other great teams or dynasties (even when you develop talent like JT and JB), consistency in the coaching...these two Celtic stars have had 3 different coaches over the last 6 years...compared to MJ who had 1 coach, the 80's Lakers had one, the Celtics had 2 in the 80, Golden State had 1, the Spurs had 1, the Pistons had 1, the Heat had 1 (in the 4 years LBJ was there) even Denver had 1...so before the media goes crazy and qualifies Boston (specifically JT and JB) over every single game look at what is a very important element. LBJ is an anomaly when he has won 4 ships with 3 teams with 3 different coaches.

Boston isn't a "great team" they haven't won anything yet 🙄 IF they do it will be with one coach likely bc your analysis cut off coaches who didn't win chips... Like MJs coaches pre Phil Jackson, don't count bc Mark Jackson don't count for the Ws bc no chip etc. Etc. Great way to not loose your coach? Win!!!! If Boston didn't choke vs. GSW or LBJ they'd still have same coach. It's not complicated win chips keep your job!

They will not give Masai credit. They rather say its Kawhi or better yet if KD & Klay* weren't injury we wouldn't have won. They forgot that we had a rookie HC in NN & a well balanced & deep roster with valuable pieces that have years of being perennial playoff contenders until Masai took a risk & send Demar to Spurs b/c he realize after yrs of giving him chances he failed & off course Casey was not good at making adjustments & Lebron in the East. I can't wait to see this rebuild unfold w/ Masai at the helm.

I love legs and jj. Mostly always agree with them, but I think they got it wrong on the specialist take. Derrick Jones Jr is a player that does 1 think elite, play defense. He is below average on everything else. That's why he's been on so many different teams. The genius of Kidd is his ability to create a game plan around his deficiencies. The same with Ruby. I think this playoffs has given more value to the specialist, especially defensive specialist.

T Wolves end of regulation game 2

while i kinda agree you need to hit with role players to be a good team , the Mavericks have Luka (a top 3 player in the league) , and a former 1st overall pick and still a top 10 guard in Kyrie. The Wolves have a 4x DPOY in Gobert and two 1st overall picks in Ant and Kat . The Celtics have a 3x All-NBA 1st team player in Tatum and one of the best 2nd option in the league in Brown. The Nuggets have Jokic. Look at every team that won the title in the past 30 years , what do they have in common.. they ALL had a top 5 player. The only ones you could argue didnt have that were the Spurs in '14 and the Pistons in '04. You NEED a superstar to win , point blank.. and for most of these teams you need a very good or great 2nd option.

In my opinion, the Wolves do matchup with them, but they haven't been able to figure out how to defend them yet.
From what I can see, the Wolves need to just let Luka and Kyrie be guarded 1 on 1 and stop giving up the lobs by the bigs helping out. They should start Nas and make Rudy come off the bench because he is a liability right now.
