as a schoolby, I never appreciated it ...now, as an old Odd Job Bod who has lifted a few bits of stone, I see it so differently ...some bits make my back twitch just by looking at them...
What I like about Tavistock is the fantastic viaduct which one can walk across. I used to run coach trips and twice ran coaches to Nottigham Goose Fair. This is at the end of the season when many fairs meet up to form the largest funfair in the country. I dare say we could find out on the internet why it is called Goose Fair.
Funny how memories change with the passage of time. I thought I remembered a much wider river Tavy running through the town. The park we walked through with the ducks on the water was a nice refuge from the noise of the nearby fair!
My first recollections of Tavistock were changing from one bus, which came from Plymouth to another one, in busy large square, when I was a child, to visit relations who were farmers and lived way out in the countryside! I cant recall if they had geese!
We called at Tavistock last Year Mike on a Shearings holiday , walked down by the river ...that Goose fair is not as big as the Nottingham Goose Fair !! and funny think we had to wait a while for a passenger missing , think on a lot f these bus holidays there always seems to be those return early and those who keep the bus waiting ..
Yes thanks, there is a lot of history about the event in days gone by. I noticed a book about the event too in the local Pannier market, which must have had much more to relate than what happens today.
I expected the driver would wait say ten minutes or so but no. Quite a contrast to the attitude of those who didn't return. After a while I don't expect they fancied facing a whole coach load of people who were forced to just sit there waiting for them for an hour.
Tavistock is a beautiful old town, and it's lovely to see these ancient events still going strong...great work....Bob

I didn't remember the layout of the town as I was probably about eight years old when I was last there.
I wondered if it was anything like the Nottingham goose fair that they have every year.
I don't know really, thus is the first such event I have ever visited. I guess there may well be similar events scattered around the country.
It was certainly very busy that day.
Those rides look a bit evil for my liking Thank you Trev
Strictly for the young!
