Why does the SpaceX droneship camera cut out?

  • SpaceX provides some of the most spectacular sights in spaceflight with the landing of their Falcon 9 booster. But why does the video feed always seem to cut out right as the booster is coming in to land on the droneship?

Two years later and SpaceX's droneships still lose signal when the boosters land. Great video, especially because it got recommended at the perfect time, though it definitely seems like not everyone in the comments has watched it. To all those that ignored the video or are annoyed that SpaceX isn't doing anything to fix this problem: the livestream, your entertainment, is not the biggest priority in a mission where they're proving to NASA that their privately-built rockets and capsules are here to stay.

    • @theformoverfunction

@eemc2cu hahaha lol you're a funny guy. Well I think you've never been in a plane bc you think those are fake too, but from a plane you can actually see circular rainbows, even while looking towards the ground. The rainbow curves bc you're at 42 degrees of the sunlight refracting (and reflecting) in raindrops (and clouds etc). Furthermore, when using a pressure washer at home, you can also see circular rainbows if you look at the right angle, even though there only a foot in diameter at most. Both of the cases above instantly debunk the involvement of any hypothetical dome in the curving of rainbows. I'm all for asking weird questions, that's what advances science, but please don't ask any weird questions that have been answered and proven many many years ago. Good luck educating yourself man!

The issue with that is if you have the delay be applied automatically from the drone ship, you just move the delay to a different part of the video, if you do it manually from anywhere else the lag will still be there. You would need to delay a whole lot more than just the drone ship video feed. Not really worth it. Also engineers wouldn't get to see exactly if the landing was successful until after the delay is finished.

indeed, since the rocket itself is fully AI controlled, nobody benefits from an ultrafast live feed

Are you kidding. I am an Average Joe and I can think of multiple easy fixes for that "problem". 1) wider beam - higher power antenna. Certainly they can afford it to film a spaceship landing, right? 2) you don't need a separate SHIP to avoid vibrations. You just need a stabilized platform for the antenna. 3) you can combine 1+2. The cost would be a few kUSD at max. So for me this "cutting the transmission" thing is just all intentional. Especially when during the last Dragon flight also the orbital transmission was interrupted at approximately the same important moment.

I'm not sure if it transmits a buffer, to me it sounds more logical that it just transmits a live signal (to save bandwidth). The actual footage is in that case pulled off the droneship itself physically or transmitted at a later moment when there's no live broadcast anymore.

Most of the time, if not all the time, this video is transmitted via UDP rather than TCP. So that means you can lose packets. To make it TCP would require a receive antenna onboard which again increases cost for 2 seconds. If you are a computer performing calculations you want real time data not buffered data (TCP). If you lose data you can handle that more gracefully. But knowing whether it is buffered or not is a whole bigger problem.

Hey Luke, excellent video. Although your hypothesis on vibration is the likely cause of signal loss, it could also be the massive heat signature of the Merlin engines that disrupts the high-frequency uplink. Either way, my solution from the beginning has been to incorporate a separate drone ship in a repeater configuration as you depicted, but with a twist. Such a repeater drone could be deployed and retrieved by the recovery drone ship. It could even be a very large buoy. If heat is the culprit that disrupts the signal, the RF link between the mother ship and the repeater uplink should be low frequency, high power.

the way of doing this right is to employ an autonomous flying drone to take off from the drone ship at the right time and record and transmit the footage from distance then land back to the drone ship, also the footage will be much better from the angle perspective also the new drones can transmit at 10-15 km the signal so can be transmitted from a boat that is close to the drone ship, that boat can also control the drone if needed, can be used more then one drone to do this one to be static and one to track the rocket booster, if you see that nice footage is made from distance.

Ok, I get why this can't be live. But they need to manage expectations better. First, have something stating that the connection is "Likely to drop". This is just like the radio silence period of capsules re-entering the atmosphere. Then show the footage as soon as able once re-connected. This should only be minutes ... like a long broadcast delay. People won't care if its not live, but you have 5-10 minutes max until people start tuning out.

If you show someone that video they're going to emotionally react to it positively. If you sit a random person down in front of a stream and it's their first time watching SpaceX because there's human cargo this time/America has launched astronauts into space after 8 years and they see a booster explode, they are going to have a negative reaction. So, you have a few options as SpaceX in the event a booster explodes during such an important mission, show pre recorded footage that pretends *this booster landing in particular* successfully landed, or, if it explodes, say you're having livestream problems and then after the pomp and circumstance regarding the successful shipment of human cargo has passed and the non space crowd has forgotten about it, release footage that allows you to control the psychological priming around the event by creating a video that celebrates your progress.
I'm not saying what they're doing is fake, I'm saying that if I needed to make sure my funding was secure, I'd do the above.
Final note, if we wanted the most authentic footage possible, we'd see a livestream that has 5-10 seconds of buffering for the replay. Or, they could have close to immediately replayed the footage after the rocket landed, such as within 5 minutes or so. Why they don't do that is... Suspicious. Why they don't tell people the stream could cut off and why is also suspicious.
It's a convenient excuse for allowing you to control the emotional response surrounding your mission.

The excimer laser used in LASIK was developed in part by the Star Wars program of the 1980's. The technology that allowed a rocket to hit a rocket in space via tracking was integrated into the laser which is placed only a few inches above the eye. The problem is while the eye appears to be immobilized by a speculum, the involuntary saccadic movement of the eye is compensated by software that allows the laser to lock onto the eye and follow the slight movements to ensure the beam treats the right parts of the cornea. Why couldn't they just program the uplink to stay locked onto the satellite using the same technology that is decades old?
