"Mansions of the Lord" performed by the Cadet Glee Club of West Point

  • It was this hymn that inspired the production "Stand Ye Steady -- Songs of Courage and Inspiration".
During the closing credits of the movie "We Were Soldiers", I heard this hymn sung by the Cadet Glee Club of West Point. After listening to it over and over, moved by its reverent lyrics sung to a melody that healed a generation of soldiers so unjustly held in scorn and, at the same time, conveying a comforting eternal Truth, I contacted the Glee Club Director Constance Chase and proposed the production. Many of the Glee Club's followers consider this hymn to be the signature performance of the Glee Club. The opportunity to create "Stand Ye Steady" became a reality in 2004.

What makes this hymn so special is that it is based on Scripture from the Gospel of John, Chapter 14:
"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."
Were there ever more direct and authoritative words spoken by Jesus Christ than, "...if it were not so, I would have told you."
Let us thank the Good Lord for this certainty and let us thank Him for expressing it to us so directly. ":Oh Lord, when the Men and Women defending our Country on ground, sea or in the air, and we Citizens of the United States of America, pray for the shelter of Your invincible hand, let us rest in these Your words.
The performance of "Mansions of the Lord" can be seen and heard on the DVD (in 5.1 Dolby Digital) and CD (stereo) "Stand Ye Steady - Songs of Courage and Inspiration" available at www.standyesteady.com and honoring all US Armed Forces past and present. Directed and edited by Doug Coppi of Curtain Call Productions, www.curtaincallproductions.com....

My grandfather served four tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. He would retrieve wounded and fallen soldiers from the battle fields front lines. Life expectancy for that task was only fifteen minutes and yet he served four tours. God rest my hero in the mansions of the Lord.

so many fine who dedicated so much
I served throughout the bloodiest years of Vietnam as a Navy line officer and
my father, a 30yr USN/MSC served as an advisor for 8 more in
I Corps. Vietnam claimed him almost 10 years to the day Saigon fell.
We are a blessed nation for having had such but sadly
so many have discarded the price paid to preserve what
our founding fathers envisioned for our nation

I lost my son to the Afghanistan war. Many question the reasons for being there. Some see it necessary. Weather you agree or not. No matter what Campaign all of our Troopers fought in.. This song is a tribute to sons, daughters, Brothers, and Sisters, fathers. to them that made the ultimate sacrifice. They made it to protect the ones they loved back home, a strong faith and belief in this country, as well as there Brothers on there flanks.. Never forget them. As a former Marine who served in another theater. This song is about Honor. To My fallen solider PFC Dana Michael Rook 101st Airborne.. Nov. 4 1990 - April 22 2014....My Broken Heart Aches without you, My Hero, My Teacher, My Best Friend, Your very proud Father...I Love You..

@ angry... Perhaps our governments have some political differences, but they are of little or no concern to those of us who wore the uniform. Damned right we're Allies. Brits and Yanks have been shoulder to shoulder in one way or another since WW1. I had the pleasure and honor to be aboard the HMS Amazon when it visited the U.S. in the early 90s. I still have a miniature ships crest I was presented. And some of us remember and were quite moved by the honors and memorials England rendered to America immediately after 9/11. We're one people separated by a common language. I say that with humor and full affection and respect !

I was an Army singer in the Viet Nam War era, 1969-1973. I was most fortunate to be a member of TUSAC, The U. S. Amry Chorus, at Ft Myer, VA, the home of The Old Guard. What a gift it was to sing during my four years of military duty. I commend the cadets of all the military posts. You are awesome, and this hymn is a fine example of your gifts.

The first time I heard it was at the end of "We Were Soldiers." I watched the entire movie without any real reaction until I had heard this hymn. I am a Vietnam Veteran 1966-67 and have friends and warrior brothers in the Wall, but this hymn and the names on the Wall opened the floodgates for me. Every five years we attend our Battalion's Reunion at the Wall in DC. Seeing their names, remembering their faces and recalling their laughter is very moving, but listening to this Hymn drives the nail home. God Bless All Who Fight For This Great Country of Ours No Matter What War or Year!

Regardless of your religious beliefs, or lack thereof, you have to admit this is moving TRIBUTE to those Americans who have served and fallen for their country. Sadly, although the country has cleared away much social injustice, the sense of patriotism is perhaps at an all-time low. The military academies represent The best and the brightest patriotic young of America. Let us hope they, and intelligent civilian oversight, can continue to lead the way in providing us the best armed forces in the world. We can only hope that should a future national emergency occur many young will rise to the occasion, as generations before did. Vietnam veteran. Army.

So I thought it would be a great idea to find a version on RUclips to practice with (being second bass). That's where it all went wrong. I am so moved and choked up by the presentation of this wonderful piece, sung here so beautifully, with the images, the feelings and what it all means, that I simply cannot get all the way through the whole song. I'll just have to thing of something else bland and boring while I'm singing it.

I cry every time I here this song. Beautiful song touched my heart for all the men I served with and friends I lost in Vietnam. I play this song everyday. I served in the Navy but I have to say the Cadet Glee Club of West Point were outstanding in this video.Thank you all and the directer for a great video. May God watch over you as you defend our country, and Thank you for your servie. Frenchy USN.

With this "hymn", my thoughts return to December 7, 2018...We awoke that morning and gave thanks once again for the arrival of the Wall Street Journal, perhaps the last newspaper left in America, and its esteemed team of editorial page writers, including Mrs. Odell, and her commentary "Where the Longest Day lives on" (American cemetery at the edge of Omaha Beach in Colleville-sur-Mer, France). We thank the commentators, too, for sharing heart-felt thoughts. We add our own with humility/gratitude for those that served on Omaha Beach, and all that preceded - and followed - in service to country, including a father and mother in WWII.
Both followed the heroes of Omaha Beach to France, serving in an Army field hospital. Mom was an officer, a surgical nurse. Dad served as an orderly and received the Purple Heart when he awakened one morning to a buzz bomb that left his three tent-mates heading for the Mansions of the Lord. He alone survived.
Thank you Lord, for all who have served our country, given the last full measure, and for those who "still serve their country" -- in the American cemetery at Omaha Beach, and -- on assignment around the world. Be with them all.

For all those who are too gentle to live among wolves ... all those that faced horrors untold and whose bodies came home (or not) but their souls were forever scarred ... so many of them died years later, but never really came home, strafed as they were by the atrocity that IS war ... Charlie Baumgardner ... Art Jeffray ... so many, many more gentle souls ... you will never be forgotten. May God hold you so gently in His Great Heart!

A lot of noise is made these days about identifying the "Best and Brightest" of our country, those students who are culled for the elite colleges of the nation. The best we have to offer, though, has already been found, but not necessarily in the halls of academia. They are instead serving in the United States military forces around the world and in dangerous war zones where most of us fear to tread. It has always been thus, and it is in our best interests that it always shall be. Thank you for this moving tribute to them.

Mike never forgive, never forget the idiots in DC. Johnson and McNamara are criminals, especially McNamara with that insane policy of using lower intellect men for ""simple" jobs in our beautiful Army. Those 2 clowns almost destroyed the US Army. Thank God we survived. Unfortunately I was not allowed to serve. In 1973 I went to sign up. I was refused service because I had a set of malformed kidneys and had had one surgically removed. I will always regret that failing. My thanks to all who served in my stead.

So. Over one million of us wounded. That would include my Grandfather (Meuse-Argonne); my Father (North Africa); and me (Desert Thunder). My best friend, Major William Hecker, was killed in Iraq in 2006 and was a member of the USMA Glee Club.

Best sung indoors a capella as in this rendition.
What fine young people America still produces notwithstanding those sorry examples we constantly hear about.
One is inspired by these disciplined voices and faces.
May God protect them as they serve our beloved country.

I never served myself, and probably wouldn't have been allowed to due to severe mental health issues as a teen and adult. But my father served for 20 years, and I have a ton of respect for those who have served and are currently serving. May God bless each and every one of you, and may God watch over those who are currently on the front lines around the world. And on a more personal note, thank you for your service.

As I read the names of the fallen I can't help but to continue to wipe the tears from my eyes, I have seen many horrors where I fought, for 18 months I tried to keep an open mind. But when you lose a family member all that seems to fall by the wayside. I am proud I served, I carry the scares from that war and when I die and am able to see my son once again then my mission in life will have been completed. To all my brothers and the men under my command I salute each and everyone of you.

It's from a Mel Gibson movie - remember him ? The guy from Schenectady whose Dad was a tax cheat who moved his family to Australia to avoid taxes ? Then he went on to prove himself to be an anti-Semite and a wife-beater pig. Reagan's family used it at his funeral to somehow equate The Great Bed Wetter with being "a hero." despite the fact he spent his military time flying a desk in Hollywood. It's all romantic, sentimental horsedroppings wrapped in a flag....written to promote a movie - nothing more.
