Awesome Video from former Iroquois Point resident ! I'm now building my own e-foil after many years of wakesurfing behind my Malibu surf-boat in Atlanta, GA. Thankful for your useful tips on what "not to do" while learning. It's quite a challenge going from "front foot is gas, back foot is brake" while surfing behind a boat's 4-5' wave. Looking forward to foiling off the coast of Florida !
If you can't tell by our videos, you should definitely figure out face-to-face that we love to foil, and we love to teach others even more. Get out on the water if you have access! The ocean will solve all of your problems... for a little bit anyway. Aloha
Excellent video. As an experienced e-foiler now, I certainly had to learn how to correct most of those issues in my learning curve. Thanks for putting words and tips to all these phenomenon.
Thanks for the refresher Alika and Donovan! Board just arrived today. Dying for the battery to ship. That’s just a little cruel having that come separate and not even shipped when the board comes. Kinda like giving a kid a new bicycle with flat tires and tell him soon, but we don’t know when, the pump with come and then you can ride it. Still super psyched!
Aloha Brian! Congrats! Were you able to use our Lift discount code on your board purchase? Sorry about the battery; it comes from an outside vendor. You should have received notice of delivery. We know exactly what you mean... oh the torture! Please reach out if you have any questions at all. If you didn't get the discount, let us know. We can fix that. Aloha.
@@hawaiiefoil Hey Alika, sorry but used Tom's discount code to order. If there is a way to put in a good word with them to at least share reputation credit with you, let me know. Tom and I have had a long thread going with me asking him tons of questions so figured I should just use his. Thanks much!
Hello from Australia 🤟Thank you for such a helpful video and sharing your experience. I am in the process of learning to efoil and I found your tips really helpful.
Efoiling is not hard, but like anything, there are pitfalls along the road to success. Be mindful of these top mistakes and how to avoid them, and you will be flying in no time.
Mahalo for your positive feedback! We are really patient with our students to help them gain confidence early, and to find small successes along the way. Sometimes our students "know better" or have an approach that requires a more hands-off approach. We can accommodate this learning style also. We hope to see you on the water, or on RUclips videos. Aloha.
Great tips. Great video, You just need to improve the sound capture and it will be perfect! Greetings from a new member of the efoil community, 15 miles south of Paris, France.
For me, I had to think turn with my hips instead of shoulders. I think it ended up meaning the same thing, but thinking hips made it easier for me, Great vid. I love that you showed both the problems and the solutions. What brand of foil is Donovan riding? Size and wings? Thx
You are correct! The hips are where the control is for both roll control and pitch control. Donovan is on a Lift3 4'9" with something underneath. The foil doesn't matter for Donovan as he can ride anything. He is only 130 lbs, standing 6ft tall. Your foil choice should match your weight, experience level, and riding conditions. Flat water riding is less challenging than ocean wave riding. Let us know if you need help selecting the best foil for you. Aloha! Alika
There are so many mistakes you can make on this board, well, on any board. Take your time, and work through your progression. We have our entire progression on RUclips. Check it out on our channel. Happy to help another foil addict.
Sorry so slow. We represent Lift efoils, but most of the brands make a quality board. Quality matters, but if you are not surfing waves or wakes, any board will do. Lift is excellent in all conditions, but especially in waves and wakes. Try two or three brands that you are interested in before making your investment. We could tell you all the differences, but it will still sound like we are biased towards Lift.

Anything to that ??????…. Del ie- Does rotating shoulders to the R make you turn R…!??
Aloha! The turning of a foil board is a bit different than you expect because the control surface is 3 feet underwater on the foil, not the rail and tail of the board. So you need to use your entire body, not just your feet. In this video, we talk about rolling your shoulder like an airplane or bird to the side you want to turn towards. A better way that we now use is "Look & Lean". Look where you want to go, and let your body fall toward that look. The trick is to keep your body stacked properly... head over shoulders over hips over feet without bending at the waist (common error). Bending at your waist is incorrect because your head and shoulders will go towards one side of the board while your hips go towards the other side (trying to maintain balance). On land, it should feel like your are falling as pressure builds in your heels or toes. Try it and tell us what you think. Mahalo. Alika
Excellent and useful, thank you! I noticed Donovan kept his feet quite close to each other, in a much narrower stance than the one we have on kitefoils, is that recommended for efoiling or just his style?
We use a narrow stance on the efoil, and wing foil. It gives us much more control over the foil. A wide stance simply gives you a wider range of where you apply your weight over the foil (more space forward and behind the foil). A narrow stance gives a more accurate range over the foil (less space forward and behind the foil). We find that we have more control with the narrow stance. Not sure about kite foils as we don't ride those.
Aloha. In Hawaii, a permit is NOT required to ride an efoil on the ocean. As efoils are classified as vessels, Hawaii requires that you register your efoil with DOBOR, DLNR. A boat safety course is also recommended by DOBOR, but not required.
Do you have any thoughts on why efoiling produces so much strain & twisting in my aft knee that I just cannot enjoy this sport? I have a 4'9 and typically I'll have no more than two sessions a week before I'm almost crippled with knee pain
Aloha @kippywylie. All board sports put some strain on the body, especially in the learning stages. Once you get proficient, your body mechanics should be more aligned with the board and actions. My first question to you: "is this a pre-existing injury?". If so, you may be aggravating the old injury due to the new movements. My second question to you: "are you riding on foil with a level board?". If not, it sounds like you are carrying too much weight on the back foot. Ideally, you should be 50/50 weight distribution between your two legs. Send me an email at hawaiiefoil@gmail.com to continue to try to figure out a fix for your situation. I am happy to help. Aloha.
Sorry so slow to respond. 300lbs is the posted weight limit, but it really depends on you. I have trained riders heavier than 300lbs, and they did great. You will need the largest board, the largest foil, and the standard propellor to provide you the maximum opportunity to learn. After you learn, "largest" is not necessary. As long as you have good speed for stability, and good control of your weight shifting, you should be fine.
Hurt me back and can't use my efoil for a long time. Its for sale if you know anyone. 2023 Matte Black Liftfoil3 4'9", folding propeller, 32" mast, extra long battery. Im in Lahaina.
Thanks for the video. I have watched it a number of times now. I still have a ways to go. Definitely doing the toe/heel thing. Question for you though. I'm trying to get my Efoil allowed on the lake I live on. The HOA hates anything new. One guy on the HOA board was saying that the high speed hum from the prop hurts aquatic life and that he pointed to a Bill in Hawaii about restricting EFoil use. Bill: HB858. Did that bill ever get passed? What kind of laws are you stuck with now? Thank you
Aloha and mahalo for the question. HB858 did not make it out of committee and there did not pass. This rep was working in the interest of a few high-end beachfront property owners, and disguised it to be in protection of marine life and other water craft. There has been independent studies showing the lack of impact on marine life. I will try to find the studies on my end and share with the community.
And I still prone foil, DW foil, and wing foil. Stop trying to shame people who love to foil but don't enjoy the struggle. The majority of our customers are (1) older men who used to surf, but now are out of shape, or (2) surfers with shoulder injuries. Both groups love that there is this option to get back on the waves without fitness or injury concerns. Enjoy the water!
I’ve never ridden one but last weekend we had great winds and me and my mate were on the water kitesurfing 2 days straight, I’m talking 4-5 hour sessions with break for lunch. It’s my understanding with efoil you would stay on the water for an hour-1.5 max then have to go back to shore to recharge? You can foil and kitesurf all day long if there’s wind. I’m not saying efoils are mistake, just something to consider
this may be suitable for you, but many of our customers have taken too many injuries from their attempts on a friend's SUP or prone foil. We get them up on the efoil with minimal effort, and little risk, and get them confident in controlling the foil. Many of these customers tell us how beneficial it was for them to learn foiling with us so they can safely SUP/prone/Wing foil on their own. Don't hate the efoilers. We are growing the foiling sport faster and safer than you can imagine. Mahalo for your comment. Keep on spreading the psych that is foiling.
@@mikeg250gt that is exactly what happened to me. Efoil was first and easiest way to learn the foil. Then I started prone foiling, and currently working through progressions for wing foiling. I LOVE the wing foil most at this point because of its level of complexity and daily challenge presented.
