- Home made wood splitter pto driven.
42 ton 6"x 32" ram adjustable wedge, interchangeable wedge, 4 & 8 & 12 way wedges three point pto driven. I just want to say that this splitter does not cover every case scenario or wood splitting it was built for my general purpose covering all of my splitting needs and the type and size of wood that i split out here in Colorado. Yes it is not a firewood processer nor did it cost any where near what processer cost, but most processers only split up to a 18" round. I have split up to 50" rounds of cotton wood and douglas fir on the machine and 32" in length.
I am more interested in the man handling the wood, rather than the splitter .... what a guy!!!
going throw my splitter in the trash now. lol. Time to put one of these bad boys on my tractor!
Nice! I like the controls being on the push block. Nice Power source (tractor). Sorry but i laughed when that first half block fell off. But i see that is really not a problem at all. Your Technic of holding a cut up with your leg and left hand is interesting and good.

It sure produces. I think you could save time and back muscles if you had something like a big table or chute leading up to the splitter table you could suspend your log over it and drop the rounds onto it with one saw cut. Just a thought. Great video. Thanks for posting.
I dont know what it cost you to build it,but it was worth every penny !
Nice rig. I would think the next parts you could use are a loading rack to cue the infeed and a conveyer for the out feed

Cut the log up while the grapple has it in the air? Even if you have to go back and forth a couple of times to distribute the weight? If you can do that over a deck by the splitter then you don't have to bend over to pick them up unless they aren't as heavy as they look?
You must have hardened the edges on the wedge?

I’m curious why you mounted your valves on the moving part instead of stationary? It seems that repetitive motion would wear the hoses. After watching it seems to be necessary to follow the round into the wedge.
The ram has a 32" stroke thats a long way from the splitter head if you get in trouble i want that valve close to my hand. I have split many of cords had that machine over ten years never broke a hose.
Some work to do there.

Does the front axle snap if you work the tractor too hard? Would keep a spare hydraulic pump and one set of ram seals on hand.
What do you mean does it snap ? Do you mean when its pulling hard in 4 wd ? That pump is over 40 years old never been apart or any seals changed in it.
If logs are one pound overweight the axle will snap. I could see a lift boom mounted on rear axle (heavy duty) and set up steering column so tractor could be driven backwards, otherwise the front loader looks like it will overload axle and break.
Idle the motor up on the John deer just a touch. They don't like to idle at a low speed.. carbon buildup can. Occur
Its running around 1550 to little over 1600 rpm this tractor has a 540-540E pto and the 540E pto runs at 1700 rpm to make 540 rpm the torque on this tractor is 229 ft lbs at 1400 rpm so after 1700 rpm you do not gain anymore torque. Thus your best fuel consumption less wear on the engine. This woodsplitter has a 23 gal a minute 2900 psi pump on it.

Got a estimate on making a wedge the steel would run about $600.00 with the shipping into me. Thinking 16 hrs @ $50.00 hr would be $800.00 cutting and abrasives about $60.00 It will probably weigh about 150 lbs when finished then add some weight for a pallet. You would have to a get a quote on freight from zip 81137 to your destination. That would be a 10 inch wide and not 12 inch

Did you design the metal part that splits the stub into equal fire place size pieces yourself or did you purchased it? Can you please share the design or where you purchased it from?
Yes i built the splitting wedge my self.
The main vertical is a 1 inch thick by 12 inches deep but I cut out 6 inch deep 12 inch tall piece and welded a 1/2 inch piece into it the horizontal center piece is 3/8 inch thick by 5 inches wide the outer ring is 1/2 inch by 6 inch the outer fins are all 1/2 inch there all cold rolled steel the inside ring has a taper of about 1 inch from front to back being tapered out to the rear of the wedge.
Needs a much better feed system and definitely a conveyor
Could the hydraulic system in the tractor be used instead of using the pot to drive a second pump?

This woodsplitter has a 23 gal a minute pump on it at 2900 psi pressure the best my tractor can push out is about 18 gal per min at 3000 psi this tractor has more power than needed to run this splitter about the min this wood splitter would need would be about 50 hp at the pto. Witch makes it nice if you want to rent it out or have a different tractor for it. This splitter has a 6 inch diameter by 32 inch stroke less gal a min would slow the splitter down considerably.

The gravel is way too slow time would be better spent with a regular forklift knock the grill out of your tractor with with that set up

Nice machine but i felt like i had a backache after watching the video! Why didn't you cut them near the machine and you had to carry them for such a long distance?
How do you or are you able to interchange your sedate from 4 to 8 to 12 way when it’s welded down?
It is not welded down you need to review the video again right at the beginning of me starting to split I show the raising and lowering the splitting wedge, it just pull's out from the top and then you set the other one in place of the one you took out.

What size i-beam did you use and did you cut out the web for the wedge? If so how did you reinforce the i-beam? Thanks, great looking build.
The H beam was W8 x 35 8"x 8" x 1/2 inch thick the end with the cylinder on has a 5/8" x 4" x 6' long piece of cold rolled welded on the under side of the web down the middle also has a 3/8" x 5" cold rolled welded on the back side on the flange. Still have a little flex at the very end of the anchored cylinder. I would try to find a .900 or thicker H beam if i ever built another one. Yes I cut out the web for the wedge then laid a 2" x 1/2 " piece of iron around the slot on 2 sides and welded them in on the under side of the web also run a 1" x 3" piece of iron up the front side of the wedge connected to the upper table that goes all the way down to the bottom of the flanges you can see it in the pictures the leaver for lifting the wedge is attached to it. Also a 6" x 1" piece of cold rolled from the web up threw the table about 8" above the table for a back rest for the wedge. Hope this helps out good luck on your build. All the flat steel is cold rolled
Not counting your time. What would you place the cost of a similar build?
I built this one about 10 years ago the parts my cost was about $5000.00 I would say with the increase cost of steel and the rise in freight looking at $9,000.00 + for parts.

Not sure guessing would be up around 12 grand or better to build one now. I built that one over 10 years ago parts alone my cost was around 5 grand back then.

that timber cutting splitting is not hard wood I would like to see oak go that splitting head
