I brought Gu (the stuff marathon runners eat during races) to my last delivery (baby #5 and an induction). It worked amazingly well to boost my energy and is still *technically* a liquid. There’s nothing worse than having a long labor and running out of energy because you cannot eat.
But also everyone knows that eating during labor is wayyy worth the minor risk of aspiration so I don’t know why medicine won’t just catch up. Boycotting any hospitals that don’t allow it
One thing you didn’t mention is a white noise or sound machine. Definitely a must for lots of people! I am a third time mom, baby boy 3 due in June and this video was really helpful. I will be using this to help me out with my hospital bag checklist!
For my first pregnancy I watched so many videos like this and I packed everything I thought I would need, it ended up being to much I found that all I really needed was the toiletries, pillow, snacks, phone charger and outfit to come home in and that’s it, and that might still be too much. the hospital really provides everything you need even toiletries I’m on my second pregnancy and I plan on packing as little as possible.
Not every hospital provides everything. most only provide the bare minimum so it would be crucial for new mommas to pack the basics. That's great to hear your hospital provided a lot of stuff.
If you want essential oil for smelling and it’s not allowed you can always have a zip lock bag with some cotton balls soaked in the oil and that way you can smell them as much as you need and just in case you hate the smell all of a sudden you can just put the bag away and not have that smell everywhere
Yes! My doula luckily had some ready for me to hold over my nose and it helped SO MUCH! Thank you for the reminder, I completely forgot about that!!! Peppermint is amazing, imo.
I’d say a stroller fan to put on your bed, your personal meds, a peri bottle with a bend (easier to use), fluffy towel or small pillow for car, and a going home dress. I always need a fan for air movement/noise. I brought my own daily probiotics, antidepressants, and stool softeners. The peri bottle with a bend because the one at the hospital is more like a water bottle and may be harder to maneuver/messy. Fluffy towel/ small pillow in case of csection because riding in the car home with a fresh incision can be painful/intimidating and having a barrier between you and the waist seat belt is super comforting. Going home dress option, again because possible csection, in case you decide you don’t want any clothing touching your incision.
2 things I was recommended and cannot recommend enough: super thick and soft toilet paper and a Péri bottle to rinse the vulva each time after using the restroom. Long live Pijamas! I did get out of the hospital in one! Can't remember if I had no more clean pants or if I just really wanted that comfort! 😂
This is a Iot 😅 im on my 4th pregnancy and im literally only planning on taking our leaving outfits, chargers for phone, nursing bra and pads and some shower shoes. Thats probably it. The hospital i am delivering at supplies all baby needs, stretchy underwear and pads, even the spray for down there i even ask them for toiletries extra pillows and a cup for water. I personally dont see the need to take my own pillows or pjs cuz for my 3rd i took my comfy pjs and i ended up with a lot of after bleeding that i had to stay in a gown so they could constantly check me. I would suggest if its available a tour of the birthing unit or maybe just ask your dr what they supply so you dont have to carry too much cuz you end up having to lug everything back out including all the paperwork and stuff they give you
I run hot so not only do I have on my birth preference sheet for the room to remain a cooler temp I'm bringing a table to fan and a stroller fan that can attach to the bed and so my husband can hold, also gel packs to throw in the freezer ( our hospital has a mini fridge/freezer.
Personal opinion, everyone told me to get adult diapers and I did. But when the time came, I loved the mesh panties! I wore them for weeks lol I took so many home.
Had forgotten to add thick socks to my list, thanks:D Also lanolin is GOLD! Got hooked on it back in early 2021 when I had my first and have been using it as a lip mask at night ever since. Just got a fresh tube to go in my hospital bag
From the dad point of view, 2 bags. Like 1 mother said " Your purse is all you need till the baby is born." We were in L&D for 30 hours, walking, delivery room, surgery, recovery and then the room. You get dope and your helper has to drag your stuff around. Your helper can bring the second bag to the room and help you get ready for the 1st family picture to text around the world. When your admitted you might as well get naked and be ready to use a sheet to cover up. Yes, when your in your room the lady can be prim and proper with the nursing bra, bloomers, lipstick, makeup, etc. 30 years later that 1st family picture and birth announcement hanging on the wall will be precious everyday you pass it. Never kink your epidural tube. Never wear anything that might kink your epidural tube. The pain will come for about an hour while they figure that out and say "You'll be ok in a few minutes!". Wrong, minutes turn into half an hour and then an hour. They can not give you a pill unless your Doctor approves it.
I'm on baby #5. I usually live in the hospital gown until it's time to go home 😅 then i usually have a pair of maternity leggings and a loose shirt to wear home. With my 4th I don't think I even showered before leaving we were trying to get home as quick as we could so I just showered once we got home 😂 our local hospital provides everything like the tucks and the spray and all the mesh undies and pads. I usually use those there and then depends at home. I really love the Earth Mama nipple butter because it doesn't have to be washed off like the lanolin and it didn't stain
Ah I have one of those on the postpartum basket list for at home because most times the hospital provides it! But if they don’t yes 10000% add that in!!
I haven't finished the video yet so maybe she says this lol But bring an extension cord. The outlets at the hospital were no where near the bed. I brought a really long extension cord and it still was juuussst long enough which was very surprising. I was stuck in the hospital for 3 days so it was a godsend.
Those compression underwear was from the brand knix right? That has been one of my biggest hurdles. Trying to find out what is best to heal your body in regards to griddles, wraps, etc
My hospital also has a separate postpartum area that we have to go to, but I didn't have to carry my stuff over. They brought over a cart that we can put all our belongings on. They made my husband wheel the cart while the nurse pushed the baby and I just basically followed them.
Socks are so important! Pack an extra pair just in case. Mine got so bloody, they threw them out, I didn’t pack extra and didn’t remember to ask my spouse to bring a pair for me, so I was discharged without socks 😅
A power bank is something we brought to the hospital with our first that we will definitely be bringing with us to our second birth as well. It helps if you don’t have a longer phone cord and to charge other things that may need to be used!
I’m about to have my 4th baby and all I take is my purse with my daily meds, phone and charger. 😅 hospital provides everything else. Night before we leave dad brings car seat and fully loaded diaper bag. 🤷🏼♀️
@@Bunny422MM so I ended up not packing it- pumps actually never came up in conversation - I forgot to ask 😅 But I definitely recommend having the LC help you figure out flange size! (I wish I would have.)
@@SomeonesGhost oh bummer that wasn’t even conversation! Some hospitals have the LC bring a hospital owned pump to practice with.. hence my SIL saying to bring my own.
I saw somewhere that you should bring a water cup with no straw to avoid getting gas. Does that sound right? 😂 Also, I think a garbage bag would be nice to have to put your clothes in once they are soiled so you can take them home to wash!
I don’t think they will be enough for the first 3 or so days. After that a really heavy flow one might be ok but you’ll be changing and washing a lot. Once the flow settles they would be my go to
When I went into labor the first time, I refused to go to the hospital until I got a meal and ice cream at McDonald's. I still say good call as it was 33 hours of no food after that.
The pricier bamboo ones are called This is J and the less expensive ones that are still so so comfy (I still wear them weekly not pregnant!) are from baby be mine boutique! Here’s the link to those: www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZPD4LDY/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_H8JWDHY11TXFWSF1QHF2?linkCode=ml2&tag=christinabi06-20
Sleep mask-especially if you have a window overlooking a parking lot or other building because shades/blinds are not enough. (Then again, I can’t stand even just the teeny tiny light on smoke detectors.)
While they’re in the hospital still, a diaper and a few blankets will probably be enough. If they’re diapered and swaddled, then everything is covered (minus the head/hat) and kept warm, and if baby needs a check-up or skin-to-skin, all you have to do is undo the blanket.
Hold on - do north american hospitals not offer nursing pillows? Literally every hospital I’ve worked at in Germany and Austria had them for the moms. 🤯
After my first pregnancy, my ankles were so swollen, I could barely get my pants on to leave the hospital. This time, I'm packing wide bottomed pants in case I get instant cankles again
I also recommend learning how to use your car seat youll be bringing to the hospital. My husband and i had one but had no idea how to strap the baby in and the nuese we had refused to help us. She sat in a chair in the corner belittling us because we didnt know how to use it yet. Afrer a half hour of us atruggling and my baby crying, she finally helped. Even if your planning on having a home birth, be prepared to go to the hospital. We had no items with us and that was WAY more stressful than me being in labor for 46 hours. Be orepared for all contingencies, even if your midwife swears up and down you wont have to go to the hospital.
The hair elastics tip is such a good one because guess what? The only hair elastics, that I brought, really snapped in hospital. 🫠 I then tried to tie my hair into a knot by itself. 😂
A plastic document holder - Walmart has some cheap ones that are tie dye and easy to use - for all the discharge paperwork and baby insurance info!
This is a very important video especially for first time moms not knowing what they will need/want
Thank you!

My hospital says to bring a stuffed animal for emotional support 😅 and clothes. That's it. But all are different
I am starting to packing now at 37 weeks. The video helps a lot. Thank you
CHAPSTICK! YES! Literally alternated between drinking water and applying chapstick between pushes lol.
