  • This isn't about bank loans. It is about gasoline, cigarettes, lottery tickets, beer, and who really runs UT. We know who Henry F. Potter is, the more important question is who is George Bailey?

Potter is just like Satan. He flatters us, appeals to our insecurities and man’s natural inclination for the want of wealth, power and comfort. He promises to give these things. Then before you realize it, he owns you.

"...(H)e owns you" : that's what an out-of-reach British billionaire (with superyachts, etc.,being the asset-stripping owner of (now-closed-down-) department-store chains) told one of his lowly British employees whose job, pension and future had been snatched away through his slimy machinations: "I OWN YOU!" He's just one of the latter-day Potters who own (and often install) the political dummies who are rubber-stamped into office by the obliging, ignorant electorates.

As Potter says, "that takes some doing" when he states George had beaten him. Turning down a job offer like this also takes some doing because more people would have accepted for the money. George never tells anyone about this meeting either.

All time favorite movie. Perfectly cast. You couldn't find a more evil character than Mr Potter. And good Ole lovable George is about as good a protagonist as your gonna get. And Mary was breathtaking to say the least. And who could forget Clarence. We all have guardian angels just like him. Believe it. Uncle Billy is that family member that keeps things fun and silly. A perfectly orchestrated film about love and charity and pride and greed. A true David and Goliath tale for the ages. God bless you brothers and sisters in Christ♡

Thing was that in the original script, Potter was going to be visited by Clarence and shown 5 years into the future if he didn't change his ways. Bailey Bros and Loan Company moves into his original bank. When Potter demands to know what happened to his bank and why George's savings and loan company is there, Clarence explained that he lost that during the town's successful lawsuit of him. He was forced to sell his house and his possessions to pay for the expensive reparations he's caused his town with his cruelty. Potter is later taken to his former mansion, now another affordable housing unit and park. Finally, Clarence takes Potter to his future self where he has been living alone in the former Potter's Field Slums. He expresses remorse for what he did to his town and it's far too late. Potter feels compassion for his future self as he dies alone. For the first time, he saw what it was like to have no one care for him in his town because of the terrible upbringing his parents made him endure. Potter finds himself feeling remorseful for his terrible behavior to everyone. He begs Clarence to give him another chance. At first, he refuses Potter's pleas explaining he deserved it. He doesn't give up and finally Clarence gives him one. However, he tells Potter that he must uphold it at all costs. If he betrays it once, this would be the road to his future and Clarence will not help him out.
Potter makes good on his 2nd chance, returns the money to George and apologizes for his earlier behavior. When he asks what changed Potter's mind, he simply mentions they got a good friend who made him see the error of his ways. That friend is Clarence who gains his wings after saving George from a terrible mistake and reforming Potter.

The attorney says that the new developments in Bailey Park used to be Potter's Field. A potter's field is where convicts or unknown bodies (John/Jane Doe) are buried.
And Potter disregards a call from Congressman Carter Glass (D-VA), who was also a state Senator and a Secretary of the Treasury. He died during the shooting of the film.

    Potter is your typical capitalist.
He gets rich on the backs of the poor.
He grows comfortable on the poor's sweat and blood.
I'm surprised this film didn't break out into another Revolution, French style.
This is what the French Revolution was about:
Madame Defarge was growing sick and tired of the poor suffering at the hands of the Potters of the French Revolution.
And she would have owned Potter.

    • @melissacooper4282

Pretty much. Potter's losing money because the people who are now living in Bailey Park were at one time living in Potter's Field paying him rent. And more and more people are leaving his rental property to own houses in Bailey Park.

    • @Gna-rn7zx

One of my all-time favourites. During the scene in Potter's office that starts here around the three-minute mark, just before George sits in the oversized chair, I'm sure I've seen a version in which Potter says, "Sit down, George", but you don't hear it in this clip, nor in my so-called collector's edition DVD. The brief clip where Potter says, "A child or two comes along, and you won't even be able to save the ten. Now, if this young man of twenty-eight was some common, ordinary yokel, I'd say he was doing fine.” has also been cut from my DVD (in other words, the scene goes directly from '...if you skimp' to '...but George Bailey is NOT a...'), although it can be heard here. Can't understand why on earth that's been edited.

It's interesting. Nobody in the movie smokes CIGARETTES. There are several scenes including this one where the characters smoke CIGARS and in another scene George Bailey smokes a PIPE. I guess since this movie is geared towards kids, they may have felt that having characters smoke cigarettes was bad. However, we all know that Santa and Frosty the Snowman smoke a pipe and big wigs smoke cigars. I guess they felt that the movie would be favored better is the smoking was with cigars and pipes instead of cigarettes which nobody today seem to like.
