  • President Trump has sparked a potential trade war between the U.S. and it's two closest economic allies - Mexico and Canada - after announcing 25% tariffs on most goods from those two countries. The president also announced a 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods. As CBS' Cristian Benavides reports, the move is likely to raise the price of some goods for Americans.

Here's why we should care about tariffs.
    - They are blanket tariffs that target all industries rather than ones that can be moved easily to domestic production.
    - 30-50% of wood used to build homes is imported from Canada
    - Every manufacturing company uses imported parts (especially car manufacturers, Tesla imports the materials to make batteries)
    - The US imports produce in the winter
    - Tariffed countries will place retaliatory tariffs on US products driving up prices and reducing profit
These will affect you and your family if you voted for this, please consider changing your mind in future elections

    • @TheRealScooterGuy
      @TheRealScooterGuy 4 дня назад

For those of you who want positives, tariffs on some specific products help mitigate the problem when foreign governments subsidize production costs of a particular item in their country. That subsidy helps them sell the product in the US below the cost to make the same product in the US. By putting a tariff on the product, the cost to purchase it can be brought up to match what it costs to make here, and prevent the foreign company/government from harming US industry.

But tariffs will only serve to decrease our access to goods while our production capacity would increase to replace those expensive goods in favor of cheaper goods in the US. But who will work to make, in theory, cheaper goods? And who is to say that goods produced in the US will actually be cheaper? Businesses will do this by using cheap quality material, reducing or limiting hourly wages to reduce costs, which in turn decreases buyer spending power. Wrong! What caused the Great Depression was a number of things, including deficit spending for World War I, printing too much money after the war ended, and reckless banking practices, among many other things.
The U.S. had one of the highest tariff rates in the world between 1816 and 1945, ending only AFTER the end of the Second World War. President Roosevelt could have ended those tariffs at anytime during his three terms, from 1933 to 1945, but he did not, in spite of the Great Depression and a second World War.
      Hmm.
Here's a little trivia regarding tariffs and the economy: From 1846 to 1861, American tariffs were lowered but this was followed by a series of recessions and the 1857 panic, which eventually led to higher demands for tariffs.
      Oops!

Wrong, the GD was caused by the overvaluation of stocks in the market, the printing of money without anything to back up the printed paper, and the overall collapse of economies around the world led to the GD. If what you are referring to is the Smoot-Hawkley Tariff that was very minuscule compared to all other factors.

It isn’t and won’t be cheaper. Because we have some of the best protections and much higher paid workers (Canada is close, but still cheaper because they allow in a larger immigrant work force to supplement their need and those are usually willing to work for a lower wage on simple tasks like factory work). Why do you think American made has been so much more expensive? Usually 2-4x more. You think it is suddenly going to become cheaper?
No. We’re just going to increase our expenditure on goods by at least another 25% in an already over inflated and unstable economy.
Please. Do yourself a favor. Go google it. Don’t use AI consolidation. And don’t put in “trump raises Tariffs” to avoid all the political stuff. Just look up “what effect does raising Tariffs have on the common citizen” or a derivative there of.

Tariffs aren't a bad thing. It's how Trump is trying to use them that's bad. He thinks that foreign companies will pay them, when they don't, and insists that it wont effect prices, which they will. The US imports damn near everything from foreign countries. Mexico and Canada, however, don't import most things from the US. Prices will raise on the items effected, but not everything. It'll be a lot easier to find non-US items in Canada than non-Chinese/Mexican/Canadian items in the US. And in the case of Canada, there has already been an outcry to boycott American products so in theory, the price increase to those wont even matter to them if people really aren't buying.

Because it's cheaper to import a lot of things? We can mine our own iron, but we don't make much of our own iron ore anymore because the U.S. Cares about the safety of our workers. So it's more expensive to mine it here than it is to buy it from a country that does not mind a few deaths per hundred tons.
So if we don't import we have two options, the price of all iron based goods goes up 40 or 50% or we reduce safety regulations to the point where American mine collapses and worker deaths are just a daily fact of life.
