Yet another Contra-style side-scroller, Cyber-Lip sticks to the run and gun formula pretty closely. There's not a huge amount to set the game apart from its contemporaries, other than the Neo Geo's trademark high-quality visuals, although the ability to change between different weapons is a welcome addition. The game also features branching paths through the game by way of elevators situated at the end of each round, although choosing the wrong direction can see the player trudging through corridors or sewers that exist purely to pad things out and drain your ammunition.
Cyber-Lip looks pretty good for the time, but visuals aside, it feels fairly unremarkable; not a bad game, but there would be better things to come from SNK's arcade/console.

I like to make up little stories about weird things in video games, and that barrel throwing cyborg got me going. Evil Boss "You're telling me we spent fifty billion dollars and ten years of R&D and human trials to create a cyborg that carries barrels into combat and throws them?" Underling "No boss, that's absurd!" Evil Boss "Oh, thank goodness." Underling "The cyborg can't CARRY the barrels himself, so we pair him up with another cyborg that hands them off to him to throw." The End.
This game had such a good ending, didn't expect it when I first saw the ending. Too bad they never made a sequel where you save the Earth.
I guess there is no saving earth, its game over in both literal&metaphorical sense.
How is it a good ending when aliens were the ones that corrupted the supercomputer and caused it and the android army to go haywire. You're then duped into wiping them out, inadvertently destroying mankind's last line of defense, paving the way for the aliens to take over without resistance.
@@jackylee5850 That's what makes it a good ending, the fact that it subverts your expectations. It's pretty creepy and a terrifying thought that you helped the bad guys win. Honestly, for the era, its a great ending.
Early SNK games had a thick layer of melancholia to them for some reason.
I mean, it's possible the player's soldier is one of the red eyed aliens too, and "ours" included him.
SNK needs to give us a sequel to this someday. Cyber-Lip II: Save The Earth. The twist ending if the first was a perfect setup for it. With the robots and Cyber-Lip defenses wiped out, it would be alien vs humans. I wonder what that would look like. Seeing how the Alien Colony level is one of the best looking levels in the game, I'd bet it would look great.
That sequel was Contra.
Contra predates Cyber-Lip by three years, but sure, let's go with that.

I like the bleak ending, not every game needs a happy ending. Cyber Lip's plot twist is that Aliens reprogrammed the earth's defence system and you inadvertently help the aliens by destroying the corrupted system, thus dooming humanity.
Used to play this game back in 94 with my dad feeding me quarters. Totally forgot about it till now
Gotta love the guy at 4:40. In a future time with space travel and androids, he (also an android) chooses to throw barrels and cackle maniacally.
Jaw-dropping visuals.
An early title that always amazed me.

what retro stuff hasn't (artificially)? all thanks to grading, hyping and insider trading. same sh*t happened in the 80s with coins, in the 90s with comics...now this, until the bubble bursts and the vultures move on to the next thing.
Ah, I REMEMBER this game ... fuzzy memories. It's the background at 4:00 which I really remember. The way the "ribs" curve upward that I remember so much. For some reason, I never realized that this was supposed to be the inside of cylindrical space colony (like Gundam). I just thought it was a weird artistic choice to try and convey perspective and distance.
can't have a proper 90s sci-fi game from japan without some o'neill type cylinder colony. I wonder if there's a complete list somewhere out there...

I think I remember seeing this game at a restaurant somewhere (pizza Hut?) when I was a kid. So many memories.
I coin-fed through this around 1992-ish at my local bar. ending caught me off guard, lol.

This was essentially a launch game for the system in the US, totally overshadowed by the later releases and - of course - the Metal Slug series.
This game is about 4MB, looks great and plays great. I miss these.
10MB uncompressed data on the cart...but yeah, I miss more straightforward, less bloated software development.
I remember playing this game ones at an arcade at holday with my parents when I was a kid.
Level 6 looks beautiful. I must agree with your assessment that the game is otherwise unremarkable. It probably would have been really cool to play back then though since it was before Metal Slug graced the world.

The Explosion Sprites are identical to the ones found in EightMan for the Neo Geo. Still an almighty quality game tho.

@@Tony-1971 : ( I'm from USA and it shows up either searching "Cyber-Lip", or in the whole list of ACA NEOGEO games by typing "Neogeo" in search. Do you have any Neogeo games at all available? Xbox has them here too, and they would show up there first most of the time, and they have about 10-20 more total available. If you have any Neo games available, hopefully they get Cyber-Lip too you eventually.........and if you have a Switch or Xbox check there too.

Ah! that explains it. The game will be available in your country, but not in mine. Yeah we have a fair few neogeo games, but definitely no Cyber-lip on there. I might set up an American account, If that's sill possible. I remember seeing people uploading videos showing peeps how to create foreign psn accounts so they could get games from other countries.
I cant believe that it took a cartridge the size of vcr tape to hold this game and a cost of $200 to buy it. Games have evolved to a point beyond imagination....

So if your character and his boss are the real villains, why is Cyber Lip seemingly building his army from the Skynet and HR Giger guide book? Can't say you wouldn't win a few battles if you unleashed machine gun Xenomorph on your enemy but it doesn't make you look good to anyone else.
Your character was tricked, the president is an Alien, and disguised himself.
Those background layers are pretty cool. I wonder if they could be repurposed for OpenBOR?
Question to the creator as a fellow creator: How do you get around some of the audio copyright on your vids? Just curious

Game companies don't tend to bother doing copyright strikes on game OSTs. Normally just record labels (so something like Crazy Taxi would very likely get striked).

The only thing that make Contra well known was it's 8-way shooting, hardcore difficulty, and unforgettable soundtrack.

Does Neo-Geo look better than genesis and SNES? Yes. Does it look/play better ENOUGH to cost $499 and be $149 a game? FUCK NO. What the hell were they thinking? I remember being at Toys R Us in like 1992 and asking my dad if there was any chance, he just laughed in my face.
