Actually, it was HIGHLY entertaining. I just visited my mom and went to the Book Barn in Niantic, Connecticut. I came home with a literal crate of books that I just wanted to... try. I think I might use my cats as a means of choosing my books. This was so entertaining.
Ugh SAME it bothered me so much, she exists just for the sake of being a womb for the man. I agreed with your opinions on Hyperion almost exactly - loved the first and fourth story, didn't like the rest, DNFed the series.
You’re such a blessing in my RUclips feed. I am so grateful I found your beauty channel and then this when I got into books again a few years ago. What annoys you in books is similar to what annoys me, you’re so funny and your videos so comforting. On top of that I discovered so many good books with you. I wish I could thank you and convey how much you helped me out through the years without even knowing.
The author of Outliers also wrote a book called Talking to Strangers. It’s the only one I’ve read of his, but I gave it 1 star. I don’t remember a lot of it now other than he discussed the police murders of black people like Sandra Bland and suggested it was because of miscommunication and that Sandra lied to the police officer, as if that makes it okay to kill her. He also discussed the Brock Turner rape and suggested it was miscommunication and blamed his victim for drinking too much. Just major yikes all around.
Wonderful. This is the guy whose book The Tipping Point all incoming freshman were made to read where I went to college 👎🏼 If anyone’s interested, the podcast If Books Could Kill picks apart and debunks The Outliers in like their second episode. They do this with “airport books” and it’s always a fun/ funny time learning just what kind of un-researched / super biased books are allowed to get published and become bestsellers
Wow, the kitties really had it in for you! Maybe because you took them to the vet and this was their revenge? Lots of successful unhauling, though. Glad to see Persephone. I hope when she gets fixed she settles down around the kittens.
Shes getting surgery Tuesday 🤞🤞 Hopefully she’ll be okay after because she hasn’t been able to be in the same room as the babies for the last couple days :(
The podcast "If Books Could Kill" did a really great episode on Outliers (and is also just great in general). Their take was pretty similar to yours but the book gets pretty racist later as well.
I was about to recommend the same podcast! Their episodes on poor dad, rich dad and atomic habits were also great (I'm pretty sure Emily has read those both).
You will absolutely not like Storm Front. He objectifies women a LOT under the guise of being an "old fashioned guy". That being said, the audiobooks are read by James Marsters (Spike from Buffy) and I could listen to that man speak for hours... and I have! Lol because I actually love the series despite its many flaws.
Someone gave me In The Woods and it's been sitting unread on my shelf for about 5 years. I'm going to move it to the unhaul pile. LOL!!! Thanks for taking one for the team.
I just found your channel! I'm also doing a Read it or Unhaul it (great name!) challenge in 2023. I listed all of my TBR books in order of the number of pages and I've been working through the list from shortest to longest. I gave myself a couple loopholes, but mostly I'm not allowed to buy new books. So far I've read 58 and unhauled 54 this year. I'm looking forward to following along as you do your challenge!
I love how the kittens just kind of came into your life and so easily adapted & became little co hosts for your channel ☺ also, I know you don't love stephen king, but 11/22/63 was recommended to me by a friend. I would of neverrr picked that book up myself, but ended up really enjoying it. hope you have a good experience when you eventually get to it. 💛
I would definitely recommend giving Tana French another try! Her books - even the ones in the Dublin Murder Squad series - can all be read as standalones and they are all very different, many people like some and dislike others often based on their feelings towards the main character. In the Woods especially is really divisive among her readership (for several reasons). My favourites of her are Faithful Place and The Trespasser.
The misogyny is on purpose in In the Woods (and SPOILER the character does get his due at the end- he is not supposed to be a good guy and he is not in any other books!), but you should try The Likeness-- each book in this series can stand alone. The Likeness is very different and from a female POV. I have actually considered reccing that one to you in comments of other videos.
Hahaha I loved when Mama cat was going to choose the book, and you had to bribe her to participate. haha! I think having the colour code makes it really interesting, too, because I find myself rooting for certain genres once they're chosen. Great video! :) (I know it wasn't the most successful to find favs, but really enjoyed the laughs!!)
@@BookswithEmilyFox Although its a series, they all can be read as stand alones. Not related whatsoever, the next book usually is about a secondary character form the previous book). I love that author, great and different thrillers. You should definitely give her another chance.
Personally I loved Into The Woods but I can see why the start of it might have a weird feel, also I would say that (to me) the first book felt a lot like a character and relationship study between the two main characters and I loved their friendship and dynamic, so it wasn't solely a thriller-mystery book imo. The Likeness though is amazinggggg and it definitely surpassed Into The Woods for me, I LOVED the trope playing in that book! And it follows Cassie and only makes subtle hints and references to the first book so you can totally read it as a stand alone. I say definitely try it!
Great Vlog, so entertaining! I often use the audiobook along with the physical book when trying to get into a Sci-FI book. For some reason, it helps me get immersed in the setting better.
I recently read In the Woods and I definitely agree with your thoughts - the narrator is super misogynistic and it definitely comes back to bite him, but it's super hard to read through. Tana French did some amazing character work in that novel, but it can be hard to read!
The only one in that series I enjoyed was The Likeness. You don’t need to read them all for each to make sense. I wouldn’t say it’s a top pick, though.
I read the first two Sue Grafton books and encountered nothing but racist, homophobic trash. Thank you for confirming my decision in unhauling the whole series! Great vlog as always! 😁
I was excited but nervous when you picked up M is for Malice. I was told Sue Grafton used to be a screenplay writer so she heavily describes everything. There will be some things that actually pertain to the story if you can remember all the details. It’s not my cup of tea but I was given them by a colleague who loves them and they’re interesting enough to push through.
This is my favourite challenge! Though it was painful to you, it must have felt satisfying as well. The fact you pushed through Hyperion impresses me, it has never appealed to me but now I'm even more convinced it would not be my cup of tea. 😅 The kitties were so cute, I can't get enough. ❤️
This was so entertaining haha. I like it when you love books too but seeing them drop like flies was fun. Hyperion made me really uncomfortable… maybe in a thematic sense. I remember a huge religious cavern and that whole section creeped me out. I meant to continue at some point to read an actual ending but have never gotten back to it.
The Dublin Murder squad series, I read 1 and 2 and they pissed me off so bad lol. The Likeness has such an insanely ridiculous premise that I just couldn’t believe what I was reading, and it made me angry at all the characters falling for it. I did enjoy The Witch Elm by her though! Oh I read The Last by Hannah Jameson recently after you mentioned it, and was pleasantly surprised at how good I thought it was haha
Please, please think again about the Tana French books before unhauling them all at once. Each book follows a different detective and they are all written quite differently. The Likeness is the one where you follow Cassie and it is really great. The first one was the weakest of the bunch in my opinion.
@@BookswithEmilyFoxthe first one is extremely painful even for readers who liked the other ones. I hated the first one, gave The Likeness a try anyway and loved this one, kept reading the rest of the serie!
@@BookswithEmilyFox the main guy in The Woods is very unlikable and he doesn't get better, but thankfully he isn't a character in the other books! THey are all just losely connected, so you don't need to read them in order, etc. The Likeness is great, though long.
I'm with you about Gladwell. I'm like, "I should see if I like his writing" but then I hear things about him and think "no." I'm actually teaching A is for Alibi by Grafton (the 1st in the series) in my intro to literature class.
LOL I did feel bad for her PH but what did it more for me was… SPOILERS Story 5 where we realize that the female character was only there to get pregnant!
I will say you don’t need to read Tana French’s The Dublin Murder Squad in order, if you want to try out some of the others. I’ve only read #6 The Trespasser and enjoyed it quite a bit!
PS, I'm reading and really enjoying a book called "Liberation!" Feminist Writings that inspired a revolution and still can, which is put out by Library of America and I think you would enjoy it. It has excerpts and chapters from feminist writings from the 1960s to 1991 (a weird time to cut off since it was published in 2021, but whatever). I already want to read the full text of a few of the featured writings. It's a pretty cheap book too - about 500 pgs and it was on sale for $13 (hardcover) from Library of America. They put out some great stuff. Anyway, not that you need MORE book recommendations but I thought it would be up your alley. :)
new here and really enjoyed this video! i’ve always felt very weird about Malcolm Gladwell so this confirms for me i don’t want to read him. on another note, if it makes you feel any better all of my cats are big too! two are about 12 pounds, 1 is 15, and 1 is 20! they’re all at healthy weights- just big cats!
Always enjoy these vlogs. Nice that you got rid of so many! About the Stephen King one: I have read 15 books of him so far and really enjoyed them all. Except for 11/22/1963. So maybe consider unhauling, especially since you already don't like his writing. It is a very very slow book.
11/22/63 isn't a mystery/thriller and I HATE that bookstores always put it there or in the horror section. It could get away with being sci-fi because it's about time travel, but it's truly just historical fiction. It's a really great story and the tv show, while different, is great too!
I admire your values. When I was younger I loved writers like Nabokov for his writing style and story telling. But nowadays, I will get rid of books that contain questionable or downright offensive messages. It’s one thing to address issues it’s another to glorify or normalize them, like misogyny and pedophilia.
I feel like people are realizing these things younger and younger and it’s amazing to see! I 100% wouldn’t have noticed all of this as a teenager and that why I get super annoyed. We’re brought up being told that it’s normal and if you say anything you’re the one that’s the problem 🙄
@@abendstern782 Lolita is actually a condemnation of pedophilia not a glorification of it, the main character Humbert is clearly portrayed as a villain. I believe Nabokov himself was actually a victim of child abuse.
Aww I wish the kitties had chosen Never Let Me Go. I read that earlier this year and loved it (I don't remember if there was any weird problematic stuff in it)
My husband is begging me to read the Hyperion series which I think has like 5 books. He listened to the audiobooks and said it was incredible. I told him maybe one day 😂 I am on the lookout for them at the thrift stores
Oh noooo, I was so excited when you pulled The Likeness which is my favorite so far in that series but then when you said you had to read In the Woods my heart dropped because that's the worst of the series so far. 😭
Right? Me too! I thought about it though and even though I’ve read about 50 books so far this year, maybe half from the library… 25/400 isn’t that many. At one point it has to happen though!
Charlie is almost as heavy as my full grown cats😂 but in fairness to him my cats are both small. They’re like 8 pounds (and once Nugget got to almost 10 and was at risk for diabetes lol)
I've had Outliers, In The Woods, and Dial M for Malice on my TBR shelf for a very long time. And now they will be going in the unhaul pile. None of that sounds one ounce interesting to me now and it's really hard for me to separate authors from their work lol! Absolutely loved the kitty content!❤😺
You’re not missing anything with In the Woods. Idk how it has good reviews tbh. I don’t recall the main character having any significant growth or development throughout the book, plus the ending was so unsatisfying, it made me feel like the entire book had been a waste of time.
You should give the podcast called If Books Could Kill a listen! They did an episode on Outliers and they really go in and point out a lot of the dumb things he's gathered together.
I welcome this new era of life with kittens at the wheel. Won't be long before we're completely off the rails, marinating slips of paper in tuna juice to capture their interest. I also keep suspending my Libby hold on that Stephen King one, I know that it's probably really good but it's hard to commit to another thousand pager with (likely) a clunky ending waiting for you 😄 Just have to build up our tolerance a bit after too many disappointing reads, maybe later...
I think you dodged a bullet deciding not to read the Stephen King book. I read it earlier this year, and although there was enough in there that I enjoyed, my goodness it is LONG. And the ending made me stare into space for about an hour after finishing it… and not in a good way!
Hope this is entertaining because... that was a rough week XD

Never thought I would say this but the squirrels are better at picking books than the cats. 😂
LOL Steve might not a second chance too!
Not sure any cats was the best one at choosing... should they do it again in the next video?
I would like you to choose the next time, to make it even. And then we can see who out of you five picks the best books😂
The first three times I chose myself and it was not good XD
It seems so far charlie made the best picks 😁
Probably not good to associate treats with biting paper. Are any squirrels out of work?
Yes! Would love to see a statistic at the end of the year that shows which cat picked the best choices😂
You could 'ahoy' them off the internet is my favorite way of saying you could pirate it 😂😂😂
Plausible deniability :P
The pet peeve I was referring to about Hyperion's 5th story:
SPOILERS
The only main female character turns out to be pregnant.. of course.
Not only pregnant but impregnated with 'important' seed. That's the only reason she's on the journey. I hate this book.
Ugh SAME it bothered me so much, she exists just for the sake of being a womb for the man. I agreed with your opinions on Hyperion almost exactly - loved the first and fourth story, didn't like the rest, DNFed the series.

I feel like people are realizing these things younger and younger and it’s amazing to see! I 100% wouldn’t have noticed all of this as a teenager and that why I get super annoyed. We’re brought up being told that it’s normal and if you say anything you’re the one that’s the problem 🙄
What's wrong with Nabokov?
@@wiktoriagrochola3256 I guessed lolita = pedo. Never read it so and i am not sure I ever want to...
@@abendstern782 Lolita is actually a condemnation of pedophilia not a glorification of it, the main character Humbert is clearly portrayed as a villain. I believe Nabokov himself was actually a victim of child abuse.
@@wiktoriagrochola3256 true. And Nabokov is an exceptional writer.
Aww I wish the kitties had chosen Never Let Me Go. I read that earlier this year and loved it (I don't remember if there was any weird problematic stuff in it)
I wish they did too!!
My husband is begging me to read the Hyperion series which I think has like 5 books. He listened to the audiobooks and said it was incredible. I told him maybe one day 😂 I am on the lookout for them at the thrift stores
I liked outliers but it is definitely very anecdotal as is all of his work.
Oh noooo, I was so excited when you pulled The Likeness which is my favorite so far in that series but then when you said you had to read In the Woods my heart dropped because that's the worst of the series so far. 😭
Hahhahahah this video was sooooo fun to watch😂 btw, how are you feeling recently after the surgery? Has you health improved? Really hope so. Love you🤗
Oof writing gymnosperms twice on the first page seems excessive 😅
A satisfying clean up 🥂
I'm waiting for the day when you pull books from the bag and you've already read them due to other challenges, etc.
Right? Me too! I thought about it though and even though I’ve read about 50 books so far this year, maybe half from the library… 25/400 isn’t that many. At one point it has to happen though!
@@BookswithEmilyFox You'll get through them someday!
Charlie is almost as heavy as my full grown cats😂 but in fairness to him my cats are both small. They’re like 8 pounds (and once Nugget got to almost 10 and was at risk for diabetes lol)
Pear is only 8.5lbs so it’s crazy that he’s already as long and tall as her! He’s going to be huge lol
I can't believe you said Ahoy😂
Maybe instead of placing them on the floor throw them in front of the kitten? That way they go for a distinct piece of paper right away.
You should give the podcast called If Books Could Kill a listen! They did an episode on Outliers and they really go in and point out a lot of the dumb things he's gathered together.
I've loved the video although your week was a little chaotic hahaha I am addicted to the cats, they are all adorable ♡
❤
I welcome this new era of life with kittens at the wheel. Won't be long before we're completely off the rails, marinating slips of paper in tuna juice to capture their interest. I also keep suspending my Libby hold on that Stephen King one, I know that it's probably really good but it's hard to commit to another thousand pager with (likely) a clunky ending waiting for you 😄 Just have to build up our tolerance a bit after too many disappointing reads, maybe later...
I’m loving this so much!!
Also adore your tattoo 😍
The bad news is that it’s fake… the good news is that it was a pack of three 👀🌈
I think you dodged a bullet deciding not to read the Stephen King book. I read it earlier this year, and although there was enough in there that I enjoyed, my goodness it is LONG. And the ending made me stare into space for about an hour after finishing it… and not in a good way!
At 27.51--- Hyperion has just been chosen. Willing to bet Emily HATES it (especially the soldier's tale)
I did hate that story for sure lol
