    Some great tips! The stringy belt loops (tip 14) are meant to be cut off once the person buys the item of clothing. The only reason they are on the garment is to keep the belt with the item while it is in the store before it is purchased.

      Learned something new! My biggest pet peeve is seeing the vents stitched down on jackets. Those are meant to be snipped off after purchase.

      @@Izabela-ek5nh That's interesting. I have never seen a winter coat with cheap thread-like belt loops. They usually have actual fabric belt loops which are not meant to be cut off.

    BONUS: Always cut the thread that holds the back flaps together on a coat or blazer. So many people don't remove it, and they walk around with an X on their backside. It looks ridiculous.

      True. I think her point is that we should do what we can to look our best. I’m always going to pass up a garment where the stripes don’t match up at the side seams. (Except where the darts are) Or where the hemline is uneven. Unfortunately, clothing out there can have these issues.

    I almost always have to have any bottoms altered and about half of the dresses that I buy. This originally seemed like such a nuisance but finding an excellent tailor has been wonderful. My clothes now fit perfectly on my body and no one can tell they have been altered. It is definitely worth the extra cost.

  • @SL-lz9jr
    @SL-lz9jr 2 года назад +13

    Regarding cheap seams, this also includes puckering at the seam lines. A well made garment won’t pucker. Doesn’t have to be expensive. The puckering means the fabric wasn’t cut properly on the grainline or on the bias. And one fabric is pulling on the other at the seam line where the two fabrics are joined. Look for another item on the rack with flat seams.

    Clothes industry is one of the only industries left that can't be made by a machine from start to end. Meaning, someone has done your every cloth. So, if you see a cloth with poor seams, it's not "cheap machine-made cloth". It's cloth made in inhumane conditions, probably by a minor with a crazy schelude. However, the more exoensive brands with better seams aren't saints either. They just have better quality control (= throwing more brand new clothes in the trash).

    I would also add to it, to not take things to tailor, if your weight changed. To me happened such story, I took all clothing that looked on me too big due to big weight loss, and yes clohing that is supposed to fit started to look awesome after tailoring, but after a year my situation changed and I gained some weight and now I regret that took those items to tailor, I want to wear them now, but now they're kinda to small, too fitting, and I wear them only with cardigans, so that its not so visible. The point is, it is better to wear One size clothing, or let your clothing be kinda loose fitting, even if you feel like taking it to tailor, it is still better than wearing too tight clothing once your weight changes (unless you are solid as rock in weight)

      Also don't cut threads that poke out but still have both ends in the fabric. Use a needle and sew it back in, there's videos online.
      You can also sew runs back into the fabric. Easy on knits but nearly all fabrics can be repaired.

    I iron all my woven cotton and linen items carefully, but then don’t stress about wrinkles I get while wearing them. I do touch-up iron them before wearing them again, but check for spots or grime first. After laundering, these fabrics won’t look crisp and smooth without ironing, nor feel soft. I think wearing these items unironed completely ruins a look. I mostly use my steamer for knits, that’s all they need. I iron everything that’s brand-new to remove packing wrinkles. If people refuse to iron, they shouldn’t buy these fabrics.

      One tip for scratched sunglasses is to take it to an eye glass store. Many will buff out the scratches on RayBans, etc. For a few.

    Thank you for this video, but personally I believe people should wear whatever they want as long as their clothes are comfortable, appropriate and don’t make others feel uncomfortable.

    Thank you. Do you know why wool and cashmere sweaters have moth holes after a year? I store my sweaters in a cloth bag and don't understand why they always have moth holes after storing them.

    • @dechen734

      You can put naphthalene balls in the bag to prevent moth holes

      Cedar wood sticks and/or lavender keep moths away.

    Can that fabric shaver be used on thick sweaters and also cashmere? I know you've mentioned a cashmere comb for that do I need both? Thanks!!

    • @AmandaJohn
      @AmandaJohn  2 года назад +1

      I've used it on thick sweaters and winter coats. I have not tested it on cashmere yet so I'll keep you posted on that!

      My fabric shaver has different levels. I have shaved one of my cashmere sweater. I think I used the lowest setting (it was months ago). But for me I was VERY careful. Very short light strokes., and took time. It looked good.

      @@AmandaJohn Thats not what I meant. I just see this "how to look rich and expensive- trend" a bit critical. So many people try to pretend to look rich and expensive and that's kinda sad...
