I can remember back in the US ARMY playing this song in my head during a 10 Mile Road march we were on. On the last stretch of it I kept playing this song in my head until we made is back to the barracks
First time I heard this song was my freshman year in band when my director was playing this in his office after school before rehearsal. We all walked into the band hall and started jamming and dancing when we heard it. We got hooked, and our director would play Motown, funk, soul and R&B every day after school. Best education ever.

Grew up on Motown. Upper middle class white suburban upbringing. Playing sports with my black friends I suppose I wasn't aware they were struggling on the other side of town. They were always happy when they came over, brought a few 45's. Billy Preston, Stevie Wonder, O'Jays. But I had to go buy my own "Gordy Edwin Starr" 45. I still see it spinning round and round. The song was over too fast. Edwin Starr was my favorite until Rock and Roll later on (Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Rush, Zeppelin The Who). But Motown has a place in my heart forever. Love. Happiest times. We moved away and I got older. But this is the foundation. Without R&B, Soul, Blues and everything Motown represented... I really feel sorry for Gen Z in the same way I remember so many thought terrible SINatra was 'good'. I know, some people will say I'm the one with bad taste. But Motown saved me from liking Sinatra, and that made it easier to accept that it's true that Sinatra was a serial child offender. I had heard it back in the day, but my career led me to finding out all the Roy Cohn criminal associates. Sinatra is one of the worst humans who became famous until Trump really, so no surprise about the Roy Cohn Boy connections. They all were light on morals and talent.
