I will NEVER forget hearing this song for the first time. I was nine years old and this came on the radio when I was lying in bed. Had my old trusty Zenith under the pillow so I wouldn't get caught listening when I was supposed to be sleeping. Eventually I inherited the 45 from the jukebox of the restaurant where my mom worked

First time I heard this song was my freshman year in band when my director was playing this in his office after school before rehearsal. We all walked into the band hall and started jamming and dancing when we heard it. We got hooked, and our director would play Motown, funk, soul and R&B every day after school. Best education ever.

Grew up on Motown. Upper middle class white suburban upbringing. Playing sports with my black friends I suppose I wasn't aware they were struggling on the other side of town. They were always happy when they came over, brought a few 45's. Billy Preston, Stevie Wonder, O'Jays. But I had to go buy my own "Gordy Edwin Starr" 45. I still see it spinning round and round. The song was over too fast. Edwin Starr was my favorite until Rock and Roll later on (Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Rush, Zeppelin The Who). But Motown has a place in my heart forever. Love. Happiest times. We moved away and I got older. But this is the foundation. Without R&B, Soul, Blues and everything Motown represented... I really feel sorry for Gen Z in the same way I remember so many thought terrible SINatra was 'good'. I know, some people will say I'm the one with bad taste. But Motown saved me from liking Sinatra, and that made it easier to accept that it's true that Sinatra was a serial child offender. I had heard it back in the day, but my career led me to finding out all the Roy Cohn criminal associates. Sinatra is one of the worst humans who became famous until Trump really, so no surprise about the Roy Cohn Boy connections. They all were light on morals and talent.
Anyway, I always heard Edwin Starr was a really good guy and well liked by musicians and fans alike. I doubt he was perfect but who is? I just sense the passion he sings the meaningful lyrics with says he believes in the messages. I'm rambling but my point is this Dip Lop and Rap is to my ears SINatra's suicide droning lonely bitter drunk in the shower stuff all over again. It's divisive and fake. Motown was the real deal. Love, Truth and Fairness seemed to be coming . Then they needed to cover up Roy Cohn's activities with Epstein activities. I know why, but I don't agree. People of color in America survived lots of garbage and still know America is humanity's best chance to evolve on large scale. I think we white Americans need to stop worshipping white collar criminals in the name of greed. Trump proved there's tons of work to do. But that's enough of that. Take him to jail and force him to listen to Sinatra 24/7/365. That will mess up anyone.
