You are definitely right about one thing, folks who say "oh it didn't deserve game of the year" or even talk trash about the game has never played the game. I was 2 hours in and seriously thought, "This Game has to win some awards, it's fantastic!" I couldn't stop playing it!
A little hint: If you restart a world (after finishing it for the first time) you can buy a little bird at the beginning that detects nearby secrets (puzzles, Vortex-Portals, Bots). ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My goodness, the music in this game is amazing! The enemies and to the boss battles looks so fun, and again with the music alongside with it makes it seem like such an experience, I wasn't an Astro Bot believer and didn't think too much of it (because I never played it), but watching John play this, it's just, wow it's really well done on so many levels.

Not only is Astro Bot my GOTY of 2024 but it quickly became one of my favorite games of all time. For me, it is rare to play a game that doesn't have a single part that drags it down. Every single level in this game ranges from okay to FANTASTIC! Every part of the game is just pure fun.
Brings me back to the simple times in gaming, like Gek or Rayman. A game doesnt have to be revolutionary or hyper complex to be good. Sometimes simplicity is best.
I absolutely plan on playing this after seeing it. I guarantee you if this game was exactly the same but with Mario characters instead, people wouldnt question it.
I played this game the day it came out. Between it and Balatro, they are my undoubted game of the years. Everything Astro Bot set out to do it did with such pinpoint accuracy and the delivery of the game is just sheer perfection. So polished, so beautiful, such an amazing OST and overwhelmingly fun!
I think with Astro Bot and being game of the year, although it isn't as expansive as some of the other games that came out this year, everything that Astro Bot set out to do was so polished and done so excellently that most people playing it don't have much left to criticize, which I think is also why it scored so well critically and among players compared to the other GOTY contenders
1:31:47 FF didn't let Astro Bot use any of their characters. I'm convinced they were just being petty because they were also going for Game of the Year with Rebirth.
Seriously? Well I hope they loved seeing them win GOTY despite that. All the press statements mention nonsense that has nothing to do with the actual question (why no Final Fantasy characters make an appearance) so I'm inclined to believe that too
I think it's far more likely that SE wanted money to let FF characters be in Astro Bot. From the speech at the game awards it seems all the cameos that appear were offered freely by their developers. I think greed is far more plausible than pettiness.

Watching the challenge run parts was a lot of fun. Also the shrinking mouse level was really impressive and really cool. even though i get almost 0% of the references i just adore how much time and effort went into the animations and music in this game!!

I smile as much watching you play as when I played, and I think smacking everything is absolutely intended! And don’t worry, I also didn’t recognize a lot of characters, honestly I just looked it up while I played. Helped me appreciate it.

See I played Metaphor: ReFantazio, Astro Bot and Silent Hill 2 all back to back and while SH 2 unfortunately didn’t get nominated, it ended up being my GOTY for 2024. That being said, both Astro Bot and Metaphor were also very good. Astro Bot did surprise me and that’s the good part about the game. I am a bit curious as to whether or not you’ll end up getting every bot lol
The horned protector and other one for holding hands is from the game ICO; same people who did Shadow of Colossus and The Last Guardian. I was not expecting to see any mention of it. I love that game. It was my first ever PS2 game.
OMG, I just got to the Mouse levels - that is SO freaking cool, love everything about it! (Oh, and I *wish* I could see Kimmy's face when you show her this section; it's just too damn cute!)
I LOVED the God of War level! Some of the characters and references are from Ragnarök, that's why you didn't recognize them ) :) Also, I think the 2018 GOTY win had a lot to do with the overall franchise as well, like how they managed to move things along from GoW 3 and how Kratos seemed to be working his way through a true redemption. I'm a fan of the franchise so I'm clearly biased toward it lol, but hey, to each their own 😉
The uncomfortable couch in the crash site is an Easter egg for the game called ICO, a 2001 puzzle/platforming game from Team ICO who also made Shadows of the Colossus and the Last Guardian. It’s a fun game sadly didn’t get as big as SotC.
As someone who grew up on the Sega side of things (Master System and Mega Drive) and eventually spent hours collecting shit on the N64. And having never owned a PlayStation, I knew of their games not much more… This game kinda hits me in the heart, no wonder it won game of the year !
Watching you play this made me pick up mario odyssey again... And I got to a level that I kept dying over and over and over and over again. And I was like gee...I'm glad I'm not a let's player LOL.
I’ve never played Astro bot, and with full confidence I can understand why it won. Everyone understands the Elden rings, wukongs, god of wars, etc etc are good games, but Astro bot is mind numbing fun, I don’t have to think hard and I can easily collect all collectables, fully explore each area, and the references are so cool to see.

I wasn't sure about this game but my 7 year old soon to be 8 begged me for it for Christmas and thought this game is noy worth $70 fricken dollars but then I watched him play it for a bit and he needed my help for a couple bosses and then I got it. He loves this game
32:18 The game has shorter levels that are much more challenging. You find them in the "overworld" of each galaxy. Fly around and poke around a bit and you should unlock 4-5 per galaxy.
Loving this playthrough, the dopamine hits from collecting the bots is satisfying, little nostalgia hits 😊 I wanted to add to what you saying about you hadn't played GoW Ragnarok yet, I would highly recommend it, builds on the first & the story is too notch, I do hope it appears in 2025.

The soundtrack in this game is surprisingly catchy. EDIT: 50:42 I'm going to have to Google all the references in this game because what is that? From what I've seen I wouldn't call it game of the year personally but it is a very fun cute and good game!

EDIT 2: I didn't really expect them to have Resident Evil and Katamari in here. I probably should have. Maybe I will have played some of the games that will be in this after all.
It was Kena Bridge to Spirits. Really pretty game, main character reminds me of Korra. Haven't beat it yet
