Hi Rik. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane. When I make mine, almost exactly the same as your method, I add Black Cherry Jelly to the top and let it get real cold before eating. It adds another layer of richness to this wonderful treat.

Coconut aside (not a fan of it, I’m afraid) these do look yummy - and I’ve never heard of them before now, thanks Rik. Sometime back I made a comment about believing my father-in-law was a founder of the iconic golden syrup as a small kid (he wasn’t, of course), but the thing that amuses now as an adult is how many people have no idea how to pronounce “Lyle”; I’ve been called “Lilly”, “Layle” and everything in between before I have to say “you know, the ‘sugar people’?” Or “You know, the golden syrup?” We even nearly missed a flight because of this!

I'm Aussie, we'd call this Chocolate Cornflake Slice I can see Chocolate Crunch Slice being used though in cookbooks wanting to step away from the cereal brand name. Always slice, never bar, bar would be 'American' and we all know we wouldn't do that! ;-) Oh and no need to break up the cornflakes. That makes it crunchy.

You’re better off subbing corn syrup with vanilla extract, molasses would give it a very different flavor.

Golden syrup and Molasses are 2 very different flavour profiles. Fortunately, you can make Golden Syrup at home. All you need is White sugar, water and a slice of lemon.

@@JanetBrown-px2jn Not everyone makes fudge brownies. If you grew up in low income house you got basic chocolate brownies. No extra chocolate, not even coconut or other types of nuts. Mom made cinnimon rolls using a type of pie crust instead of bread. Folks did what they could in those days with no public assistance.

@@57WillysCJ Well I grew up during rationing, there were no brownies.I would still say if the cake that was made was not fudge like then it was a chocolate cake,as it’s the texture that makes it a brownie. I don’t even remember having a chocolate cake as a child during the 1940’’s and 50’s.Sorry to have offended you,but I didn’t grow up privileged either.
