My mother used to make Australian Crunches. I will have to dig out her cook books because there were hundreds of hand written recipes handed down in the family from my mother's side.
Hi Rik. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane. When I make mine, almost exactly the same as your method, I add Black Cherry Jelly to the top and let it get real cold before eating. It adds another layer of richness to this wonderful treat.
Good morning Rick all the way from 🇨🇦 . You're one of my go too channels for amazing recipes. Thank you for sharing your easy to follow steps by step recipes. Have a great day 😂 ❤ all of your recipes 🎉
Oh my heavens, I used to make this with weet bix. I couldn't remember the recipe. I'll do corn flakes for a nice change. I remember it used to be delicious. It was always a rush between myself and the kids as to who got it first! Thanks Rik.
Coconut aside (not a fan of it, I’m afraid) these do look yummy - and I’ve never heard of them before now, thanks Rik. Sometime back I made a comment about believing my father-in-law was a founder of the iconic golden syrup as a small kid (he wasn’t, of course), but the thing that amuses now as an adult is how many people have no idea how to pronounce “Lyle”; I’ve been called “Lilly”, “Layle” and everything in between before I have to say “you know, the ‘sugar people’?” Or “You know, the golden syrup?” We even nearly missed a flight because of this!
Wonderful! You always come up with unique, original and delicious creations. Love how you always include the back story and history of your recipes and that adds so much to your appeal! Thank you again, Rik!
Wait until you put them in the fridge, let them go cold, and then, the next day, have one with a cuppa-that's dangerous, I can assure you that I can assure you. Thank you. Best, Rik
My mum would coat cornflakes with melted chocolate and spoon the mix into fairy cake tins and i thought they were so fancy. Love nostalgic recipes from home. Ordered shao hsing wine, going to try some older recipes you’ve done … I’m exited to get going😂
Yum. Thanks for the reminder. Haven't made this for years - my child is grown now but, it was the perfect way to use up weetbix or any other cereals they didn't like when they were small. They had absolutely no idea how much unwanted cereal got recycled into ANZAC Biscuits, Afghans, Aussie Crunch, Muesli Bars and the like. 😊
Looks fantastic Rik my grandchildren will love these thank you , iv never had these just the simpler cornflake or Rice Krispie cakes but will be making some 😋Amanda xx
Since I’m not a fan of coconut, I wonder if finely chopped pecans would be a good substitute. Where I live, the pecans are cheap/free and readily available. Thanks for another wonderful recipe.
I'm Aussie, we'd call this Chocolate Cornflake Slice I can see Chocolate Crunch Slice being used though in cookbooks wanting to step away from the cereal brand name. Always slice, never bar, bar would be 'American' and we all know we wouldn't do that! ;-) Oh and no need to break up the cornflakes. That makes it crunchy.
Nice one 👌 you see this often round Bolton. I've also seen toffee crunch , which is mixed with cherries and sultanas instead and a toffee topping instead of chocolate
I dare not, the teeth are leaving the building quicker than Elvis already 🤣. Back to the Branston mind, Oxo's have near doubled in price recently so maybe you enjoy the challenge of a copy even just in a powder form?
I had to go check the recipe- there really is no leavening! It seems like a coconutty cross between a brownie and a rice crispy treat. Which sounds like a fine idea to me!
Did you use sweetened or unsweetened coconut? Desiccated coconut isn’t as readily available here but I can find unsweetened shredded coconut. I might try toasting the coconut first for an added nuttiness. That really looks tasty!
I'm a 50yr old Australian and have NEVER heard of this recipe at all. However I have heard of and have made a normal, standard Chocolate Slice which your "Aussie Crunch" resembles.
Strike me round rik. Looks nice, aussies can indulge in that sugary delicacy so all is not lost. Meanwhile in the land of pints bacon butties and king charles we will indulge aswell
I’ll try this right away! My grandmother always made a large thick white cookie. Made with shortening like Crisco ( no flavor) . No vanilla flavoring, only a bit of lemon and nutmeg. Dusted on top with sugar. A bit on the dry side, definitely a dunker! Is this a recipe from her British heritage? And are you familiar with it?
Rik,you are wicked tried the Aussie crunch, but I only had a few rice bubbles instead of cornflakes it still worked and now I can't stop eating them.WICKED
Visited Barnsley in the 80s. The people I was with made "bons" to have with tea, like little cupcakes. Have recipe for those? They were not as sweet as an American cupcake and had more of a glaze frosting from what I recall.
No as an Australian Crunch Lover and a Honey Hater I'd say not! Get Golden Syrup it is important for the caramelised taste. You can order it from Britain or try making it yourself at home from sugar.
