    Older SM57 microphones do not have the trash can image in the plug. I have an early 80s SM57 that has no trash can symbol, and has three holes on the chassis. The criteria for a real one seems to be correct for anything after 1990.

    • @JorgeRodriguez-hi3lm
      @JorgeRodriguez-hi3lm 4 года назад

      I was worried about this, I haven't found any information about the trash can image. Also, do older models have the 'r' for registered product on the right side from shure?

    Bro you’d get the same sound as the shure if you just boosted the low and mids a couple hz on your daw lol 😂

    What if you were to replace the fake capsule with a genuine Shure R57 capsule you could get from Performance Audio or Adorama Camera, and put a Cinemag 1057 in as a xformer? For about the same price as a real SM57, you get a modded SM57 that will have some subtly different tonal characteristics from an original, but still work as a guitar mic.

    So while I had it unscrewed and twisted the screen the wires didnt turn??? Red and green wire. It has the threads showin the screw was kinda l9ng. I got the b9x instructions and everything.

    Yep, I bought one from ebay and the next day ebay pulled all his listings, would not let me leave feedback, etc. It arrived, and it's fake. Getting m money back at least and getting one from a dealer. I can't tell you how it sounds, because I broke it unscrewing either the top or the bottom before I even tested it. Can't say which broke it.

    Great vid. Thanks for the sound test as well. Problem is, if somebody has never had a 57, they wont know that the fake they have sounds so much more badly compared to a real one. Thanks though. Sucks that people on tight budgets can be targets and wind up with crap when they REALLY need what they save so hard for. Good job.

    The correct and unique way is by measuring impedance. The fake ones have an impedance of around 600 and the original doesn't reach 20.

    It is a cheap plastic karao capsule. Since you talked me into twistin it till the little capsule wires broke I took it apart. And when I ordered it I thought it was a sure second or an over production surplus at 14$

  • @waltertomaszewski1083
    @waltertomaszewski1083 6 лет назад

    What if you were to replace the xformer (with a Cinemag 1057 or an AMI T58) in the fake? Would that make a difference?

    • @hadleymanmusic
      @hadleymanmusic 4 года назад

      This one I got off wish, when Ilook into it I dont see a transformer and that made me ponder. Is it in the capsule? Or is my memory right?

  • @gaden0114
    @gaden0114 4 года назад +3

    It would have been relevant and nice with sounds other than earthquakes and thunder that consists mostley deep frequencies.
    A pure guitar sound, for example, where you could hear a wider range of frequencies.
    There are other tests at YT where the Chinese fake actually sounds better than the original.
    I also think that you should be aware that there may well be several factories that make unoriginal microphones, and that the quality of these can be different.
    Scams in any case

    Great review Eric! I just bought a SM58-S of eBay for $88 (including postage). Immediately noticed a questionable weight difference and a cheezy feeling on/off switch. An easy quick authentication reference is the weight. Go to the SHURE website, check the weight specs. If you don't have an accurate scale, your local weed dealer will. I wonder what happens when you send in the SHURE warranty registration card from the counterfeit mic?

    • @hadleymanmusic
      @hadleymanmusic 4 года назад

      Yea this 57 offa wish.co for 14$. When I got it I told Kelrock to feel this , it feels lighter than what I remember a 57 to weigh.

    • @___xyz___

      I got my weed dealer to check the weight on my SM57. Fortunately, it was real. Unfortunately, I had to pay him with my SM57 to get my stash cus I was broke. That was back in the day. I'm homeless btw.

    I can understand why someone would want the Shure product, but let's not overthink an EQ difference in the mics. For the price difference these are very close, i think the Shure is EQ'ed for bass to eliminate any potential for feedback that is generally caused with higher frequencies. I mean think about that, nobody has ever heard a thumping bass level frequency squeal. And let's go there with the Shure design. The only reason the cartridge head turns freely, it's a poor design where the head is a clip on and you have to align the access notches to dismantle the SM57. And then there's the eventual sloppy fit a SM57 has where the solution is wedging a piece of foam between the head and the body where it clips together. So now we have an issue where the mic rattles and is noisy The SM58 conversely is a threaded screw together top.
    Anyway, the more I've read & learned about a professional grade mic, The main difference is output impedance. As long as the mic is between 50-600 Ohms, it's considered a professional grade mic. So you're getting a full range mic with shinier highs with enough bass and scooped mids with the more affordable mics, certainly something that can be EQ'ed even closer to a genuine Shure. Shure even does this with the Beta mic versions of their tried & true originals. Mics just sound different, some prefer Sennheiser to Shure, EQ tone of the mic becomes a matter of preference. The other spec for difference is sensitivity. 54 +/- 3 decibels is an industry wide spec pretty much for professional grade $ 100 mics too. No getting around the issues all mics have, $ 15-1K, and in the end they all perform about the same for a passive dynamic cardioid mic.

    • @jimcamp2423

      Perhaps, but 1 year into 3 Pyle microphones, PDMIC59 (SM58S style), PDMIC78 (SM57 style) & PDMICR68SL (Model 55 style) . All 3 mics still work like they did out of the delivery packages. They cost me what $ 377 of Shure's authentic microphones would MSRP at. All 3 Pyle microphones for under $ 100 and I bought a Pyle mic stand as well. From receipts, the 59 was $ 17, the 78 was $ 13 & the 68SL was $ 42, combined was $ 72. Add the $ 23 mic stand and all that was $ 95 delivered. Pyle didn't even go to the length to fake the Shure branding in an attempt to dupe a consumer. As I skipped the Shure products, I can't/won't comment which I prefer, whether that equates to better or worse. But I can say without reservation, Pyle Pro microphones are an exceptional value and are holding up with any Shure under a 1 year warranty that each product has. Initially, I can say that I felt the Pyle Pro's weren't as good because I didn't pay $ 99, $ 99 & 179. That was just one aspect of the load of crap for me, that spending less than $ 100, that somehow I had cheap garbage because I didn't spend $ 375+ for the Shure products.
      I bought the PDMIC68SL because I wanted a Unidyne Model 55. They look similar, but as I researched the Model 55 Series II. Like the SM57 & SM58 use the same cartridge, the Model 55 Series II is loaded with the same cartridge as the SM mics. I saw no reason to pay $ 179 for a Model 55 Series II that was not a Unidyne cartridge. Maybe the SM57/58 cartridge is far & away better than the Model 55 Unidyne that came out in 1939-whatever changes they made to it every decade to refresh it ?Not when a PDMICR68SL was $ 42. Even if Pyle Pro does exactly what Shure does and base all 3 products in the same cartridge. That's exactly what Shure has done. And I'm only regurgitating what Shure's official website has for write ups on the history of their own dynamic microphones. I did spend a lot of my own time to research this before buying Pyle Pro. I wanted to be certain & happy with the purchases. Buy what you want. But I can say that as long as Pyle continues to make those 3 models, I see no reason to buy anything else for my needs. There's always Behringer, Samson & others that have very comparable products as well. The only regret I have with the Pyle Pros, I didn't buy the 3 pack of PCMIC59 and get the plastic hardcase. But I do have that for the PDMICR68SL. I can always load a mic into that plastic case for leaving the sheltered confines of a home studio.
      The other thing about Shure microphones, out of warranty, the repair is going to cost more than several Pyle Pro microphones are brand new. You might as well buy a new Shure just the same as much as the replacement cartridge costs out of warranty. If the Pyle Pro needs EQ to make it sound exactly like a Shure, that's not much effort to turn the bass knob to the left. Once one becomes familiar with the microphone, it's almost a set it & forget it part of recording.
