That kept happening to me, I learned that SINGER embroidery machines work way better with SULKY #40 weight or MADEIRA#40 weight. The cheaper threads break and make birds nests in the back of the pattern. Very frustrating but I'm so glad I figured it out.
All singer embroidery machines have this problem you can learn the machine and once you do you will have it beat. I have owned a Futura for 15 years and once I learned what it doesn't like I have had very few problems running this machine. first off don't use the thread holder on top if this machine has a drop down thread holder on the back side of the machine use that or use a cup or bowl wider than the spool of thread you are using. My Futura does not like Madeira thread I have read many blogs of people with other types of embroidery machines who have found their machines are thread picky all threads are not alike. I use Coats & Clark polyester thread which runs smooth every time. Also, make sure your bobbin is loaded correctly and the needle is up all the way and tight. Also be very sure your machine is threaded proberly. Any one of these can cause needle breaking (bet it's the thread) or nesting on the bottom (mostly caused by the bobbin thread the machine doesn't like, did you use Madeira?) I do intend on buying one of these machines and when I do I will make a video showing how to tame this finicky beast.
Hi Diana, The reason the thread is distorting that way on the XL 580 is because before you embroider, you have to drop the feed dogs. The machine does not drop the feed dogs by itself. You have to manually do it and its at the back of the machine. I know because the same thing happened to me. I dropped the feed dogs and problem solved.
Get yourself a thread stand so the tread comes off evenly and does not get wrapped around the pins on the machine. I had a similar problem with thread breaking on my Singer Futura XL 400. Once I got a thread stand I didn't have that problem anymore unless the thread was not embroidery thread. It also broke a few needles till I had the thread stand. That should fix that problem. Even though the machines are differnt models they work the same.
Thanks Ursula.. I did purchase one of those. Got it from joanns with ny coupon of course. I dont have aby problems with my machine so far. I guess we're buddies now. No longer enemies
Thanks so much. About the CD, i know, i was looking for one too. But there's nothing. I think the 550xl does have a CD, but not 580. How weird. And yes, my feed dogs were lowered and i did get the stabilizers right. Then, for some reason, i tried to mess with the needle plate and kinda played with the bobbin case. And that made it work again. It probably got dislodged cause of the thread thay keeps on getting tangled on it. Thanks so much
I am fighting right now and dead in the water on the junk drive software for the XL 580 for I can not load it to a laptop purchased for just the machine. I am still waiting to hear from singer. However I did learn fast that the thread sock is a must to keep the thread from tangling.
Just watched your video, you look like you used regular thread in your bobbin when embroidering. You can only use the bobbin fill in the bobbin when embroidering. Also, make sure you are using embroidery needles with the correct eye size for your thread. I usually use a 90/14 Microtex Extra sharp. Also, be sure you use the thread stocking, felt and spool cap if your thread is on the vertical spool. I have not had any luck using my upright spool on top of the machine for embroidery. Hope this helps.
Hello mam loved your video demo I am owning a singer ,xl 580 can you please suggest me whether the feed dogs are to be raised or lowered while doing embroidery in connection to the computer . I as a beginner did embroidery lowering the feed dogs it did well but for the past one week I find the frame not moving and the thread gets entangled under the needle plate.pls do help awaiting for your reply
Hello, You wouldn't happen to still have the USB install stick? I am in a bit of a pickle as I have lost the singer USB and singer do not sell replacement ones.Basically my XL580 is useless without it.
hi Diana. I'm considering to buy this one too. what is the file extension for the embroidery? I'm familiar with 'wilcom' and i'd like to use wilcom to design my embroidery.
i have just joined the world of embroidery, I have a Singer Futura XL580 that until now I have only used for sewing (i've had this machine for 9 months), I am trying to find out how to embroider a JPEG image, any help would be really appreciated.
Hello I was going to buy this machine, until I seen that embroidery issue.. did they ever get back to you and what was the issue..did it get resolved or...are you unhappy.. I totally like your honesty
the surface area of the machine with the embroidery unit is 16" (width) x 30" (length). But, keep in mind that the embroidery part will be moving back and forth and sideways. So, the total area needed for it is 35" x 30"
Hi, I just Bough used singer futura xl-580 but usb key is broken, I called to singer support, and they asking for 350 pounds for the new one. warranty does not work because i bought it second hand. Did someone had similar problem, and is it possible o find cheaper solution? thanks
Hi Diana, Can I ask a question about your Singer Futura 580 embroidery machine. If I have my company logo which a graphic designer made as a jpeg or adobe AI format, can I embroidery it using this machine?
The problem is not mostly you, it's the machine. I've been fighting with my XL-400 for more than a year and a half, and I just can't trust or endorse it anymore. I've used a thread stand, high end embroidery thread, the correct bobbin weights, everything. Still I was plagued with birds nests, ruined fabric, missed stitches, outdated software, etc. I have tried every file format from dst, to Compucon XXX, still ending in errors. I then decided to buy a Brother embroidery only machine, and the difference is like night and day. It embroiders fine detail well, and even the smallest model yields professional results at high speeds. No wonder some of the best embroidery machines in the industry are Brother machines. I'm selling my Singer XL-400 and upgrading to the larger Brother embroidery machine with built-in computer editing features. For sewing, and quilting I'll just purchase a dedicated sewing machine. Again, you probably are not the cause of most of your machines problems. I realized that learning embroidery takes a bit of time, trial and error, but after comparing the Brother embroidery machine experience to the Singer machine, I also realized that embroidery shouldn't be this difficult. If it weren't for the terrible things that the Singer machine put me through, I would never appreciate, or enjoy embroidery with the Brother machine this much.
I had this problem, too and I removed a little plastic square from a rectangular hole on the sewing machine so now all attaching points on the embroidery part fit and go into the machine holes.
That kept happening to me, I learned that SINGER embroidery machines work way better with SULKY #40 weight or MADEIRA#40 weight. The cheaper threads break and make birds nests in the back of the pattern. Very frustrating but I'm so glad I figured it out.

Loved your video! I'm thinking about buying one myself, I've never tried to do embroidery before but with this review I'm all in!! Thanks!
If you use the thread holder in the back of the machine instead on top of the machine you will find your thread does not break. Hope this helps.

Do you still have this machine? How have you liked it over the last couple of years?
I really need a XL-580 Service Manual. Can't find one anywhere, even Singer. Any ideas really appreciated.

With the XL-580 you need to use the thread sock or sleeve on the spool to keep the thread from tangling.
tpen891 thanks!

can't seem to locate a basting stitch ... the stitch length doesn't seem to get long enough. any suggestions?
When you have this all set up with the embroidery unit how long is it? I ordered one and need to clean up a space for it.
the surface area of the machine with the embroidery unit is 16" (width) x 30" (length). But, keep in mind that the embroidery part will be moving back and forth and sideways. So, the total area needed for it is 35" x 30"
Where can I no find a replacement cd

I hate my machine! I have the 580. It doesn't work! Paid such for it! It's a paper weight!
I am having trouble connecting the machine to the embroidery part not the hoops it is the big part where the hoops goes
I had this problem, too and I removed a little plastic square from a rectangular hole on the sewing machine so now all attaching points on the embroidery part fit and go into the machine holes.
Is this 110 volts? Or can available 220 volts also.
Plug it to 110v if you have a regulator.
the only difference i see betwèen this and the One Plus is the USB plug in.
I bought one of these for my Mexican girlfriend and I am trying to find a tutorial in Spanish.
Can anyone help me?
Can you do quilting on this machine
Take out your bobbin and rerun in your bobbin hook. Tension in bobbin looks like to me
Sonho
Read the instructions then watch some youtube videos before using the machine and THEN make your own video .
