rs3 swap
You have to keep pushing for round 3. I’m loving the content, don’t let it get the best of you!
Swap in a vw 2.5 + turbo
AWD swap from a MK6 Golf R. You already essentially have the motor (when repaired again)
Kill it with fire
Man I feel so bad watching you guys work on the Civic. You guys are truly saints. Thanks for making this happen!
Next time we all need to be in the shop together
@@HumbleMechanic I like that. I’m voting to be the foreman. Watching people work is where I really shine
Well done everyone, great series and I learnt a lot!
@@Deutscheautoparts Dont forget to remind us of vendor codes and punch times. :P
you guys should build one car each and do a series were you do multiple races, drag, track, witch car gets the longest on 10 gallons of gas, maybe end with some rallying depending on how nice the cars gets. we ofc wanna see the building process as well.
I think the only option now is to do a huge turbo build instead of nitrous.
Perhaps Charles can consider a K24 swap...? ;)
I agree
@@TassieLorenzo For reliabilities sake.
And some forging probably?
200 IQ….. between the two of us
🤣🤣
*4 of us 😂
lol
🤣🤣🤣
Got to love seeing a couple of VW guys working on a frankenstein Honda with a 1.8b with a turbo.
Not sure what kept them from vomiting the whole time 🤣
A clapped one at that lol. Get a similar age accord and you'll realize how those things are supposed to be super solid everywhere
It’s kinda funny because Hondas was my roots and I chose to go to bmws and VW’s lol Hondas are stupid easy
Ls
@@christopherelrod8788 a non-butchered ED/EF is ridiculously easy to work on! That's what I cut my teeth on.
Accords are damn nice though.
look at Charles and Paul, fixing Ben and Ben's car while one of them are having a tough time. this shows what the community is all about! helping each other out and having fun. thank you guy for filming this series, it have been a blast watching!
Can't get enough of that Paul and Charles bromance. I love watching you two making the world a better place, one busted motor mount at a time.
same here they are goals
Haha right!? What a lovely comment, cheers!:)
When you take the time and effort to fix the issues with your competitor's car...shows what good sports these two gentlemen are, they gained my respect.
Thanks! All in good fun for sure.
The head and oil pan are already out. just hone it and put new pistons in. This is how you learn to nitrous.
I don’t think you should give up on the nitrous. I think you should push forward with the project and make it work. It’s always nice to learn new stuff.
Agreed!
agree ☺️
Civics are the easiest vehicle to first learn automotive because of their simplicity. I learned how to fix, upgrade, and understand Automotive know-how with a 92' Honda Civic hatch when I was 15-16 y.o.. 20+ years later I'm working on a 04' VW Passat 1.8T GL 5speed Wagon. I love it.!
1991 DX sedan was my first - still have it!
...but it's been out of commission for years.
Love that car, but also loving my Mk 7 Golf.
@@jameshaulenbeek5931 all I have left to my civic is the original engine harness which was a 1.5L and an extra manual 1.6 D16A6 wire harness. Lol gotta sell them just haven't gotten around to it since they have a tendency to hide. 😏
This has been a great and fun series thank you guys for all your hard work
Loved the rematch - wish the Jetta had survived though. I’m thinking you guys need to just go for a bigger turbo and tune it. Good luck in the next round and hope you can bring home the win for the Euro fans
Charles you guys need a 5 cylinder for your next try at the strip! A turbo and a MK5 2.5 might not be too expensive!
Same thing happened in my 2.0 TFSI Leon FR. Missfire on cylinder 2, broken spark plug, I took the head off and the piston was melted. In my case injector from cylinder 2 was way below spec for the ammount of fuel injected. Ended up replacing injectors and forging the engine :D
NICE!
stage 1 or 2? or just stock
@@ElJaviTuning It was stock back then
@@HumbleMechanic Are you runing k03 or k04?
forging?
It was already smoking after the first run, I noticed smoke coming out at 25:19
It’s so crazy. I didn’t notice it at the track. But while editing im like WTH IS THAT
BTW, doing cheap at-home vinyl decals? Use mildly soapy water in a spray bottle. It will allow you to get all the bubbles out and do slight adjustments to the graphics before they completely stick.
Lol I was like “well doesn’t look like they’re using much water, I’m sure they will spray some on right now” only to find out it was bone dry lolololol.
Your problem was your spark plugs needed to be 2 steps colder than stock so you melted them because they couldn’t dissipate the heat.
This crossed my mind as well. Not terribly familiar with nitrous, but I'm pretty sure I'd read this elsewhere.
this
They are 2 step colder tho. He said it in another comment
I was thinking the same. Plugs which started the chain effect of problems.
coming from ef hondas to now owning a mk6 gti I can say with confidence this video has come full circle for me. Love that you found all the janky flaws on the civic.
I owned a 92 Si. I recently got my first Audi. There was a long period where I wasn't doing my own repair work. I couldn't believe how easy it was working on my Audi. Then I realized it's because modern cars are aluminium so bolts don't rust the way they used to making everything come apart much easier.
Put a 5cyl with turbo in it!
07K all the things!
I feel like what would be really cool for this challenge is 2 cars from the same era rather than something so new vs something so old. if its an early 90s honda they go with, find a cool early 90s vw or audi. That'd make for a really fun challenge because then its the reliability of that same time period rather than vastly different time periods and engine technologies
Would be super fun
Same cc and n/a to see who have the best build
Audi turbo 5 cylinder
@@arseneauje How about a Jetta or Passat 2.5 against a TSX or Si 2.4, manual vs manual? Us Honda guys will happily let the VW guys have an extra 100cc and cylinder. ;) :) It could be fun to do superchargers instead of turbochargers?
Question is though, do you modify a 2.8 VR6 or a 2.0 16V?
So excited for some full length content.
I get YT is pushing for ppl to use their new shorts to compete with TickTock but that's not why we come to YT
Man! Just watching the two of you guys together is enough to qualify for good therapy! The whole ensemble is perfect - great blend of everything nice. I started my Sunday on a beautiful note. Thanks guys.
Yes we can blame the tune, that's what everyone does, and I disagree with blaming the tune, but its plausible. However, you can't tune around degraded hardware or potentially missed upgrades. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but a K04 went on the car, which is a minimal upgrade, but did they upgrade any fueling? Even without nitrous I would have done RS4 or S3 injectors, HPFP internals upgrade, a better FMIC, much colder and small gapped plugs, make sure the 6.6BAR fuel filter was in it, maybe even that fuel rail return valve upgrade, just so you dont lean out.
I'm pleased to see that the rods held, however the stock cast pistons melted due to the high cylinder pressures and excessive heat. Forged pistons would have helped, but thats more $$$, and it would have only helped so much with running lean. FSI engines need fuel pressure, so the LP fuel system upgrades would probably only help the nitrous soleniod. The spark plug electrode likely broke off due to pretty bad knock and high cylinder pressures (also heat) from too much timing or not good enough octane rating in the fuel. If the o2 sensor is good, it probably wasnt the issue and would have kept up. Likely the injectors needed to be open sooner, I"m just thinking out loud :D
To another note, nitrous is awesome, and even more awesome on a turbo, I do it in my VW, but the progressive controler and the RPM window limiter should be set to spray when the car is NOT making peak torque. A 35 shot is small, I'm surprised it didn't take it, but hey, lack of fueling or not enough timing retard can do this. Well poor fuel quality, poor spark quality can all do this too. I have my nitrous set to spray when the torque starts to fall off, meaning once the turbo range dies off, it picks back up with nitrous. Its quite beneficial to stock turbo cars, because K03s will die out early.
Either way, great video, great content, I love watching this, and yes, I do understand this was a budget/fast build and a challenge. I am merely explaining the issues as I would understand them from my own experience. Which isn't too shabby. Check out my IG @rcptuning Love the video, you guys rock. DAP is wonderful.
Great comment, very insightful, thank you so much
@@samybreezy2768 my pleasure. Keep in mind, these two guys have busy lives and was a fast and budget-ish build.
@@phunkfx I'm not talking about the build in any way, just that it was very nicely explained
@@samybreezy2768 oh definitely my friend. Great content to watch and good for fun and informative conversation. 🙂
Was that the Car Wizard that walked by. ;)
My hypothesis is not enough timing pulled from the tune with the nitrous plus not enough fuel in the nitrous tune, which caused severe detonation in the nitrous run, melting the piston and the plugs.
Or not enough ring gap and broke a ringland, and those shards broke the plug
@@savagecr-x2438 they gapped the rings though, and you can hear it pinging it’s head off on the dyno. Should have done more steady state tuning to see if it would knock, although not many American dynos are load bearing dynos.
This was awesome, I love seeing the failures and you guys investigating them. Also, it is always fun when you and Paul get together.
Please keep it going we are learning a lot. Even if it's what not to do. I love this. Thank you so much for making this content.
I think it may of been a tune issue 🤔 it was massively down on power for the setup
I agree, I had a MK5 gti with only a downpipe and that made 300BHP and 445nm torque .
@@benvanbaak yeah this setup in the UK could make upto around 380 to 390 bhp with a good setup but this was way down. Imo the tuner didn't know what he was doing and I would be going back to him for compensation as its started detonating straight away
Agree, i definitely felt like it was way too low on power
I think the ignition timing when on nitrous is what hurt it. You normally have to pull a lot out on spray
Nah prolly a bad injector. Broke plug, melted piston
Some of the best entertainment I've seen in a long time on youtube. Thanks guys my son and I were dying from laughter
thank you for 40 minutes of great content! kept me interested the whole time
The Fast and Furious Jetta had no brake calipers.. don't do that to your Jetta 😂
Wait wait wait what
Weight reduction
This is such a good series. Crap jdm vs crap edm
It’s all crap from here on out! 💩
Civics got the steering wheel with the nitrous buttons, but the Jettas actually on nitrous 😂 gotta love these guys
I am a Honda mechanic… 19 years in.
Wish I was there to help. Can do an axle in 15 mins.
Hondas use the following sizes, 19, 17, 14, 12, 10, 8, and then the axle nut.
A lot of those bolts I seen WEREN’T OEM Honda bolts. Also. This car is a typical 88-91 Civic after everyone has molested it.
I feel your pain.
Fantastic series. Hope you rebuild that Jetta again ;)
THANK YOU!
anyone else noticed smoke coming out of the steering wheel at 25:36?
Yes
I figured it was a vent
That was fun to watch even though shit blew up. The Civic looked like it had some diarrhea. Please do another series like that. It’s great to see ones like this especially for people like myself who have winter 9 months out of the year. Thanks everyone for putting this series together.
I love the collaboration with Paul’s crew, you guys work well together. I’m also humbled by your tech skills (Including Paul). There’s one word that comes to mind watching this series, entertained.
THANK YOU!
Since I own a MK5 Jetta myself, I'd say definitely do something with the car instead of just pushing it straight into a scrapyard. What I personally would love to see is the GLI being converted into an R32 with the proper engine and drivetrain. I know its a really big and kind of expensive project, but it might actually be worth it at the end. Other than that, keep up the good work and I can't wait for the mentioned projects that we're going to see this year!
humble has a garage full of vr6 cars already.
@@two_number_nines Well, I clearly haven't been following the channel for that long 😅😆
@@skytv9017 I have a 3.6VR waiting for the right project
@@HumbleMechanic Oooh, me likey. My next idea is to put a W8 in it, but surely there's no way that is ever going to work 😄
@@skytv9017 with enough sawzall blades anything is possible.
I never heard them say anything about changing the spark plug heat range. Did I miss it? If you didn't change your plugs at least a step colder, that's most likely why your having issues. You should be 2 steps colder with boost and n2o. Don't give up on the nitrous, good learning experience and it's awfully fun once you get it dialed in.
We did. We are 2 steps colder than OEM
Loving this series, keep at it. More research into the nitrous to get it running reliably. Colder spark plugs and larger injectors. Some forged pistons would be a good investment too!
I think we need more of this duet, you and Paul are gold together! As for the car.. it’s just doing Volkswagen things, no rhyme, no reason, just Volkswagening. MOAR HM x DAP collaborations!
We got more coming! this year will also be another project with G+G!
Fascinating! If anything, I’ve learned that there are better ways to add some power to your car besides nitros. Lol.
I’ll be sifting through the comments and waiting for the vinyl wrap guy to provide some commentary on y’all’s skills.
Me too Hahhaha at least we know we suck
@@HumbleMechanic I gained a new appreciation for the vinyl wrap people after doing some vinyl wrapping on my car. Not as easy as they make it look in the videos…at least if you want it done right! Lol
Love the series! Can’t wait to see some videos on your new Golf R.
Due to reliability issues it sounds like the obvious step moving forward is to k swap the Jetta. Another VW engine of any flavor is clearly not the answer
No it's just these guys haven't a clue about the tfsi engine tuning wise. Simple bolt ons I.e intake, decat and hpfp would of made close to 300 bhp. These engines can run 450bhp and 430ftlb on stock internals reliably. Absolute terrible display of tuning this engine. Should of spoke to rtech in the UK or look at the tfsi tuning page on fb for help.
@@MikelDog Another issue is that this is probably a USA built or Mexican built VW. It is common knowledge that European/German built German cars are a lot better.
This was a lot of fun to watch!!!!! Subbed ❤️
The best wrenching and commentary! Always brightens my weekends
Man these engines suuuck!
that civic looks like a death trap
Very much
@@HumbleMechanic thanks for the content
Looks like it went lean, and had too much timing advance while on the nitrous. Higher octane fuel would have helped but the afr should have been monitored better.
Thank you for taking us on this journey. How can we not be entertained. 😉
I was impressed and surprised at the run without nitrous. This was a fun series to follow and I hope you guys do more like it.
The problem isn't that working on a Honda is worse than working on a VW... It's THIS Honda. Hahaha. So much bad previous work and negligence.
"Then we did the thing that we knew we shouldn't have done, and that's take a closer look." Isn't that the truth. Worst previous work to deal with is wiring.
I don't think I've ever seen that much twist and tape. Bummer it didn't work out better with the Jetta, but fun adventure. That engine gets to retire.
That wiring in the Honda is the sort of stuff nightmares are made of...
@@whorutothink Really REALLY bad.
I just love watching you two guys working together on cars. Cant wait for the next collaboration. I think it was due to detonation. Greetings from Canada.
Hearing someone say that they would rather work on a VW than a Honda astounds me lol. Love the video, keep up the good work!
I feel like the tune was too aggressive for the nitrous, and it knocked on heavens door. It would have been okay if you hadn't gone with the nitrous, but those plugs were already melted and cracked and the extra oxygen just nuked them and dropped them into the cylinders
I just want to say that this is my favorite stuff with you guys. I'd love some wrenching with you two more often, both channels! I have more laughs and relate to it SO much! "And really a challenge we don't... Want to put up.. With."
Thanks Ben for putting things in perspective.

Great series. More of this.
Dont scrap the jetta! you should really see this one through, make it work with nitrous, this is becoming a really fun series. And its fun to see someone struggling and learning opposed to just experts putting nitrous in proven engines :D
Amazing stuff! I feel like there are fast and furious lines to be dropped with the Jetta and NOS. Haha
Fantastico, great stuff Lads, sorry for all the sadness🙏👍🙂
as a bpy owner of 14 years, really enjoyed this series
Great show! Too bad you only got a few runs with the engine. With two out of four broken?nonperforming cylinders it is a miracle you got the race times 13.4 and a13.2 ..
epic journey guys keep it up!
I'm really enjoying watching people who know what they're doing not knowing what they're doing. Reminds me that even though I've still go a long way to go there's never gonna be an end to the learning.

I love my MK5 Jetta. That being said, pull the turbo and a few other parts, and let that Jetta become a tin can. Thanks for the hard work on this series!
As I've said in on the Cars and Cocktail videos you and Paul are the perfect pair for content, education, and fun! No dig at G&G for the Civic, but yikes, lots of odd stuff going on with various parts of the car :D Tough call on what you should do with this. Slap some pistons in there and call it a day? Some sort of charity event/fundraiser? Just keep it going? Hmmm :)
I think it'd be cool to see the ol jetta revived, then again I own a 2012 jetta 2.0. Naturally aspirated though.
Orange beard sticking down the helmet - perfect Stig's Scottish cousin. Priceless!
luv ur work guys..
Id say you need port injection for the 2.0t. run them only when nitrious is active, Ive ran the fsi for 12 years and just dumped it for a 2.7 in my b7 a4. also is that hat style available in the merch shop?
FAWK. You guys are making me really nervous with my broken BPY. Trying to figure out what to do with it. I was thinking about a basic rebuild but it seems like it needs more than that if you are running anything more than stock power. Still though a 13 second 1/4 mile without nitrous on a potentially partially borked engine is quite respectable. I say keep it!
17:08 oh God you are using adjustable hammer, how disgraceful
Great episode by the way, i've been waiting for this! :)
Sad the series is over. Super fun.
Nice to see Ben!
love the shot of the T2 towing the jetta.

bolt-on turbo kits are definitely the simpler way to go
You guys are hilarious 😂 loved the episode guys
By the way use water when applying the vinyl it will help tremendous
I loved my MKV Fahrenheit Jetta. Either you two are really short, or the civic guy is a giant!
