I definitely prefer his first portrayal of the Hatter rather than in Through the Looking Glass. Here, he is a perfect balance between insanity and hyper intelligence. I liked that his friends not only stuck by him but also respected him, not to mention his ability to use anything to his advantage on the fly (perfume in the eyes, hat frisbee, mannequin stand, etc.) All of that was blended pretty well with his madness and mood swings. In the sequel, I felt like he was only emotionally unhinged. I didn't see much of him other than him being sad or childlike, which is still in character, but I thought the sequel took it a bit too far just to drive the plot.
I agree, even though Hatter's goodbye scene was pretty good. The sad thing is to see just how much Depp changed in the 6 years between movies. You can tell that Hatter is different in the sequel because Depp is different; he gained a lot of weight and was going through some issues. Still, I enjoy the movies for what they are. I still feel cheated out of what could have been an amazing trilogy if they planned and filmed a trilogy in quick succession. Imagine the Depp Hatter that we could have gotten.
@@bighand1530 I also much prefer the Hatter in the first film, but there are parts in the second film where the old Hatter still shines through, and that goodbye scene kills me everytime 😭I would have loved to see more of this franchise too! and I think a trilogy would have been perfect!!! I saw the trailer a long time ago but never got around to watching the film. Never realized how much of a role johnny Depp's Hatter had in the movie. Gotta watch it now
Alice herself is underrated if you ask me. And the effects for her being pretty big were well done. At 4:23, look at the size of her hands. It really looks and feels like she is that big and tall.

Now, I’ve always had an idea for the Tea Party. I think that the song that should be playing on the phonograph should be “Over The Rainbow” by Vera Lynn. Why? Well, as many of you might know, that song was first featured in the film “The Wizard Of Oz”. And these two movies share a lot in common, I don’t know. Just an artistic choice I would’ve personally made.
Agree but disagree. It could indeed be a good thing but the song is too calm and melodic for the mad hatter. So maybe a version of the song where the disk is broken and you only hear “Somewhere” The references is still here, the pression is here too thanks to the repetitions, and the broken disk is stressful
Didyouknow in Victorian times hats were often made with mercury in them, and that's where the "mad as a hatter" saying came from? All times seem to be strange times.
Reminds me of that movie from when he was the kid who was on the radio morning show. I like this one very peculiar one. I heard that once I wonder who said that.

I prefer the animated Hatter more since I find more appealing and doesn’t look like a clown but I think Johnny did a good job as the Hatter. Funny and strange yet good hearted.
@@bighand1530 I just find Johnny’s portrayal as the Mad Hatter a little creepy and somewhat malevolent. The animated Mad Hatter I find more appealing and funny. Just my opinion yet I still like the Hatter because he’s strange but good hearted and funny in both the animated film and Tim Burton film.
