Despite the background being washed out a lot, am I the only one that prefers the look of the iPhone 8 camera? Something about the iPhone 12 camera just doesnt look natural to me
I personally like the 12 more. This wasn't the best example because it doesn't show the downfalls of using the 8 since it was all done in nice lighting. As soon as you get into a worse lighting situation the differences become more obvious
why so many dislikes? video was just put out and there are more dislikes then actual likes AND comments, wtf... he put hard work into this video, it looks well made and i’m considering buying a iphone 12, what’s up with the hate?
Believe it or not, there are some people who’s lives are so boring and sad, that they actually feel it’s worth wasting it on to dislike every single video I post as soon as it’s posted
I appreciate that man. It doesn’t bother me too much because really it is still just counted as engagement to RUclips so it helps me. Thank you for the kind words!!
I went from the 8 to the Xs. No need for me to upgrade yet. I did make the mistake of getting the 64GB though. Don't realize how fast you can fill up that small of a phone when filming... so I just do my filming with my Hero7 black and Session 5.
Yea man I learned that lesson with my 6 when I first started this channel. Since then I’ve gotten the biggest available and never regretted it. So far I’m absolutely loving this new one. Everything about it is so much better except maybe the weight difference
I also prefer the footage from the iPhone 8 Plus despite some scenes blowing up the highlights. There’s just something to it like the “iPhone” look that we got used to. The newer iPhones take stills and videos that look more and more similar to those of Android phones IMO.
I have read a lot of videos on the new 12's HDR and you really have to bring the highlights down in editing or the footage looks too bright. The clip at 5:40 without HDR is the best showing of the difference in 3 years with the dynamic range that the 12 pro max is capable of showing. There will be bigger differences when/if you film stuff with low light.
Yea man low light is night and day. I should’ve probably done lower light than this. The 10 bit just kinda looks like 10 bit to me in editing. A flat profile that needs color corrected to look right all for the sake of more dynamic range and color. I do look forward to a LUT for it. That would be awesome. Have you found one available yet?
@@Brant_Moore I have not looked for a LUT for it as I am still debating upgrading to a 12. I just have seen numerous reviews on it saying that the work flow to make the 10 bit HDR look good is quite a bit different than regular footage. I have seen some of them literally almost drop the highlights as low as they possible can because it looks better and it still retains all the detail. RUclips also doesn't yet properly support the Dolby Vision HDR so it will never look quite as good on RUclips until it becomes one of their standards.
Well, kinda. The Dolby vision in RUclips thing really only applies when directly uploading to RUclips from the phone or if you export an HDR video from the editor. When editing with it after transferring from the phone it’s no different than editing a 10 bit video file from a real camera. Dolby vision is more of a LUT itself than a video format. So unless you’re exporting a 10 bit video file, you still end up with a similar result. In theory you could achieve a very similar look but without as much color/luma information through using a LUT in something like premiere
@@Brant_Moore Yes you are right about that RUclips doesn't like when you export the video as an HDR video. I have just seen that if you shoot in the Dolby Vision HDR setting on the new phones you have to really adjust the files to make it look not so overblown. Haven't seen any videos yet on people using premiere to edit the footage but there are lots of Final Cut and even iMovie tutorials to get the most out of the footage. Either way I am sure you will figure out what works best and it will be miles better than the iPhone 8 especially in the battery department!
There’s such a drastic difference in levels between them that it feels like it’s just a subjective choice but in proper lighting, the 12 pro max takes it hands down
Brant, good vid!!! With tinkering through apps, exporting from iphone work arounds, and sometimes post-production tricks on the IPhone 6 or 8 you can get 4K @ 24fps, 30fps, or 60fps footage- that when viewed at 360, 720, or 1080 (what most people view things at on IG and RUclips and since most people use their phones, 4K is not that noticeable if a difference between 1080, 2k, or 4K on a phone)-to look as good as the 12 (it seems though that the 12 extremely streamlines)... ...however on a large HDR 4k monitor or TV, that’s where you would notice the difference between your clips here. Simplest way to explain it is the video file on the 12 is more dense. That denseness registers most really on something like a 2k, 4K, 16k, etc., projection at an IMAX... so when “No Promises 2” has an IMAX run you’ll be set Brant! 😂 All that said, the most drastic difference I noticed was the audio, the IPhone 12 saves you the $ in that maybe you don’t need an external mic in alll situations like you need with your 8 (I know with your phone vids in the past you had to have been using an external mic, especially for any talking you do). [I do this for a living (media stuff), so please forgive my nerd effort post here, usually I don’t get to have my two favorite worlds-cinema and bmx-collide much]
Yea man I was really surprised at how close some of the clips really were between them. Then you have very obvious differences in dynamic range in some of them. I agree on the audio, it’s so much better, even though it does seem like the base levels are higher since you can hear more background noise on the 12. The 10 bit is so much better in most respects but I just don’t think I’ll use it much unless there’s a general purpose LUT that becomes available for it. I love nerding out on this stuff too as a video person. Seeing the untouched 10 bit really felt similar to seeing the 10 bit from the GH5s we use at work
@@Brant_Moore yeah it looks a lot like a GH5!!! And interesting about the sound levels!!! I’ll nerdily go google what mics the IPhone 12 has now even though I’ll probably never have a 12 until 2026 😂. Also there are some programs that you can film in on an iPhone that do the recording with a lut monitoring preview or directly record with the lut applied already. Wondering though if the IPhone 12 is advanced enough to have its video recording program already have that? (PS there are some general purpose luts I’d recommend but they cost $ and you’re color correcting is good already so you don’t need to buy em I’d say)
@@Brant_Moore But yeah it actually kinda looks a lot like it has a c-log lut already on it. And yeah for sure with the dynamic range, must be a combination of the lenses and 10bit, but you’ll notice going forward your black and dark pixels will be captured much better with less work on your end (and as other people are saying here, you’ll definitely notice differences in lower light, at night, etc... maybe you should do a lower light test)... Anywho you’re awesome, have fun talking to #ourbmx Ryan Fudger!!!
Thanks for the comparison..tbh, the colord in the iphone vid looks more natural to me. The 12 looks too bright to the point that it makes me feel like it's fake.
@@Brant_Moore maybe because I haven’t actually tried the 12 pro max yet so I don’t actually know the difference first hand. I still use my 8 plus and I don’t think i need an upgrade yet as long as apple supports it. Btw I’m impressed with your bike skills dude, keep it up man! Imma sub to you.
