Judy was hardly the tragic figure she is too often thought of. She was an extraordinary person who led an extraordinary life. I think she did extremely well with the hand she was dealt. Liza herself said her mother loved life, loved to laugh, loved her craft, loved her audiences and loved her family. Judy died young, true, but she accomplished more in those 47 years than most of us do in 70. That’s a lot to celebrate.
Frank Sinatra said it best when he stated in an interview, “In 100 years, I’ll be forgotten, but not Judy. Judy will be remembered. @@ruthmarner6582 You're right; those who deny the obvious don't really know what the word means, as is commonly defined in legitimate dictionaries. The life of every alcoholic and drug addict is a tragedy. Yes, it is possible to have a sense of humor, enjoy kidding around, having a good laugh, like to party. But beneath all that, for Judy, was winding up without health, money, a home, possessions, family, and the thing that mattered most to her, work worthy of a star. Anyone should see the photos of her in May 1969 and say, "Tragedy? What tragedy?"
America had just buried President JFK on November 25th, 1963. This show aired on December 22nd, 1963. This was such a beautiful way to spread Christmas cheer to a nation in mourning.
Can you imagine being eight years old (like Joey), having the most famous singer in the world as your mother, and appearing on a show with her that would be watched by tens of millions of people, and singing "Where is Love?" from _Oliver_ . Impossible burden to place on a boy? I don't know how Joey reacted to the situation, but if you look at that one shot while he is singing, Judy is so damn proud. I remember my mother and father, who were not famous at all, when I'd be doing something up on a stage in elementary school (like playing Abe Lincoln, Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny), beaming with pride. You're convinced at that age that you can do anything when you know you can rely on your parents to be proud of you. I hope Joey felt that way too. This show, sixty-one years later, is still a treasure. Thank you.
I don't think the kids would have thought of their mother that way at that age. She probably had to fight to get them on the stage at all, as kids are kids no matter who their parents are.

Lovely Lovely Lovely with tears rolling down from my cheek. Judy, I truly hope you to know that someone is admiring you and appreciating what you and your children had done almost 62years ago❤😊
Having just watched the movie bio of Judy, this was so special to see. She certainly was a class act. The kids were terrific, appearing so comfortable. Wow Lorna Luft had such a powerful and beautiful voice. I sure want to look into her music. It was great seeing the handsome talented Jack Jones. All around wonderful show. Liza was a natural born talent for sure. Loved this!! 💙🎶

She's ALWAYS been my favorite this show was in 62... I would be born 5 years later and my sister was born in 69 the year she died she was one of a kind
The absolutely best concert I ever attended was Judy's comeback to Hollywood at the Hollywood Bowl right after that comeback at Carnegie Hall. It was amazing!
Between her mother and Louie B. Myer and the MGM movie factory as they called it that poor little girl who ended up on drugs because of them and mentally unstable as a adult never stood a chance in her life. And that's so sad . because she was a wonderful actress and a amazing singer and dancer.
I love watching this every Christmas, and always notice new things, like @48:15 how Joey rubs his ear after his mama hits the high note on "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."
It's like... "Mom, why do you have to sing so loud?" It could perfectly be my mother and I when she speaks loudly to me and I tell her not to scream in my ear 🤣
22:17 The perfect definition of sibilings 🤣 Liza is like... "Oh, my little sister does it so well." And Joey is like "Uh... yeah... that's cool" And at the same time he's like "Please let this be over now." It could be my sibilings and I perfectly 🤣
Thank you for reposting this wonder!!!! My Christmas season would have been incomplete without me watching it ❤🍒🎄. Incomparable and Marvelous Judy Garland 💞.. 🪻🌿
THIS IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL BY AN ICONIC CELEBRITY PERFORMER!! I especially love that opening number "CONSIDER YOURSELF" IT'S SO ADORABLY CATCHY, & FUN, & PERFECT FOR JUDES (AS MICKEY ROONEY CALLED HER) & HER SPECIAL! But I'm sorry, Liza as We know is like a Mini JUDY GARLAND (WITH A TINY HINT OF BABY GUMM IN HER ADORABLE LITTLE CHEEKS, EYES, NOSE, & LIPS!) EVEN RIGHT DOWN TO HER "REGULAR SPEAKING VOICE" (WE KNOW DARN WELL THAT LIZA SOUNDED IDENTICAL TO JUDY VOCALLY) EVEN AT THIS EARLY AGE IT WAS UNCANNY, & JUDY KNEW IT TOO!!😂 But as I was gonna say... I'm sorry, Liza had it, Lorna could sing, "&" act as well...BUT JOEY, JOEY, JOEY?😞😔🥴🥴🫣🫣😵💫😵💫😟😥😢☹️🙁😖😣😳 WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED TO POOR JOEY? Sweet as Honeysuckle on the vine, but the poor kid couldn't carry a tune in a bucket! APPARENTLY THAT GUMM FAMILY GENE SKIPPED RIGHT OVER JOEY!! I'm sorry if that upsets anyone, I know 120% that I'm not wrong, but I'm not trying to be mean, You can see Judy's face when He's doing His first solo like (WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THIS ONE?😂😂)
It's pretty obvious that Liza and Lorna modeled their singing style after their mother! Liza sounds almost exactly like her here, (although she did develop more of her own Caberet like style later on) and you can hear the onset of Judy Garland's voice with Lorna! Poor little Joey, tough act to follow, and that was a little painful, (Ain't his mama proud though?) but I'm sure he got much better later on! 😁
Lorna spilled the beans in her book about Joey, but no review or interviewer dared mention it. She said that Judy took her usual drugs during Joey's pregnancy, and that affected his brain development. Although it's often written that Joey has "worked behind the scenes" or has been "a photographer," there is no evidence he has ever been employed during his life.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I was wondering if you would be able to share the file with me so I could watch it with my grandmother? Her internet is slow so won’t be able to watch it on RUclips
@@sheg1969 Well, I can't blame her. She was 11 years old here and I guess it was more laziness than anything else. It could be my brother and I perfectly 🤣 He is 9 years older than me and Liza is 6 years older than Lorna. Although the difference is that they get along very well and on the other hand my brother and I get along well but we don't have that bond of friendship that Liza and Lorna have. So I definitely wouldn't get off the couch to hug him and say hello. But based on Lorna and Liza's friendship, I think either of them would do it. Call me crazy if you want, but I think Liza was "mommy's girl" (no offense) And of course that made Lorna a little jealous like the rest of the little kids 🤣
Judy intentionally made hash out of Mel's lyric because he scolded her briefly for flubbing a phrase in his The Christmas Song before that. When she messed up, he said, "Close!" Thinking quickly, she sang "rainbows" instead of "raindeer," as a musical "Eff you, Mel, my own song is more important than yours."
Lorna looked rather uncomfortable when Judy was singing "Over the Rainbow". Every time her mother looked at her, she forced a smile and as soon as Judy looked away, the smile disappeared. It seemed like a comedy routine, but I doubt it was meant to be funny. It was sad to think that just six years later these kids lost their mother.
I always wonder how much longer Liza and Tracy Tightpants stayed together. Of course it's great to see Judy get back at Mel Torme for having the bad taste to say "Close" after she flubbed a minor lyric in "The Christmas Song." Jack Jones should have been more casually dressed; he looks like something out of "Mad Men." And couldn't they have done something with Lorna's hair? (Kick-ass voice, though.)
