The argument the story makes is that humans stop pairing with each other, which the last human alive being a old childless cat lady is a prime example. Birth rates around the world in real life are falling like mad in every country where women are not forced into marriage, so "quitters" indeed.
And if our population fell to far that whole marriage thing would suddenly change. And probably not revert back to the way it is now for several thousand years, if ever.
Many of us were cannibals and much worse not even 500 hundred years ago. Outside the family unit there was hardly any love spread out by any of us. And we changed most of that in the last 100-200 years. Humans didn't quit, they just removed the poison that's build into us at a molecular level. But thinking we would stop at 4 is silly. We would uplift gorillas, orangutans, badgers, bears, dolphins, crows, parrots, horses, pigs, seals, orcas, rats, raccoons and the list goes on and on. And then we would create others from scratch too. And then they all would probably do the same.
Yeah, there'd have been a few Amish worlds and similar where people decided to live primitively. And you know at least one world would be entirely steampunk. And probably a few furry worlds too where everyone was more hybrid than any of the 3.
Same reason it's dying out right now, women have a preferential lean towards becoming childless cat ladies. If you look at the birthright numbers around the world you will find that they are dropping below recovery numbers in every country where women are not forced into marriage. Pretty much you could either have a species or you could have women's rights that's what reality is demonstrating anyways 🤷🏻♂️ It's become a pretty big problem and most the European countries in the US, it's also a problem here in Japan. China has started government non-voluntary egg harvesting programs, so they seem to be keeping their numbers up 😂
It's rare that I encounter something so beautiful but gut-wrenching.
The dwindling of humanity to extinction was 100% the cat's fault!
I'm sure he had to do with something being pushed off a desk/table.
That one hit like a ten ton hammer 😢
Yes it did.
Humans are not a bunch of quitters. Even if some are, there will be rebels who will fight to survive.

Sometimes you just get too tired.
😭😅 I'm not crying. you're crying 😂
Dogs; humans' best friends indeed.
Spit I'm sobbing at this one
Blimey that's a great tale! Very enjoyable.
Bravo Sir Encore!
For the Algorithm, for the Author(s), for the Disembodied Voice!
This one made me tear up. Good story.
a tear jerker at the end , ngl. 🙂
Beautiful story. Nice retelling. Thank you!
Beautiful. Have me goosebumps at the end. In a good way.
LOL, "Wolf 359".....Star Trek (TNG) reference
TNG used Wolf 359 but it's a real star and (relatively) close by. When/if we crack FTL it will be one of the first we visit.
It is not a candidate for life bearing worlds, however.
With present abilities. I would think fertilized eggs could be kept to restart humanity if needed. I suspect cats set it up for humans to fade. ;)
Kinda wierd they didn't just start cloning humans?
By this technology level, it should be a viable way to make sure there are humans around.

Ok, after a moment I realized humans, cats, and dogs wouldn't be the only ones. Someone would be getting funky with the octopus, too.
You used the wrong thumbnail dude.
Wrong thumb nail?
Sooooo never uplift other species or else we may fade away with animals as companions rather than people. Got it.
Thumbnail doesn't really connect to the story or the title
How about inviting the ocean mammals?
There's gotta be a little water world much like the movie.
Somewhere...
Probably due to a lack of manipulative limbs.
Nicely told. But WHY did humanity itself die out?

Cat ladies
Because that's the plot line the author wanted.
Other than mankind Ascending, or a genetic plague, humans would still hanging around...IMO.
