Very influential, yes. However, I'm not that convinced that Beuys really understood Steiner that well. But he is a fundamental key to unlocking the semiotics of Beuys.
How do traditional functions of art differ from contemporary functions of art? What is art for? What is art's social function? And which form of art is better at performing these functions? Comparing perennial functions (traditional and popular art) to what Joseph Bueys did and you might come up with the answer that Joseph Beuys isn't really doing much more than creating nonsense objects which you can pontificate upon. I'm sorry. I've seen his work in Germany and just didn't find it interesting in the least. John you make his work sound meaningful, but I think one function of Beuys' art is to produce people like you - sycophants.
